| 1 | ¶ Vede quão grande amor nos tem concedido o Pai, que fôssemos chamados filhos de Deus. Por isso o mundo não nos conhece; porque não o conhece a ele. | Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and [such] we are. For this cause the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. |
| 2 | Amados, agora somos filhos de Deus, e ainda não é manifestado o que havemos de ser. Mas sabemos que, quando ele se manifestar, seremos semelhantes a ele; porque assim como é o veremos. | Beloved, now are we children of God, and it is not yet made manifest what we shall be. We know that, if he shall be manifested, we shall be like him; for we shall see him even as he is. |
| 3 | E qualquer que nele tem esta esperança purifica-se a si mesmo, como também ele é puro. | And every one that hath this hope [set] on him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. |
| 4 | ¶ Qualquer que comete pecado, também comete iniqüidade; porque o pecado é iniqüidade. | Every one that doeth sin doeth also lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. |
| 5 | E bem sabeis que ele se manifestou para tirar os nossos pecados; e nele não há pecado. | And ye know that he was manifested to take away sins; and in him is no sin. |
| 6 | Qualquer que permanece nele não peca; qualquer que peca não o viu nem o conheceu. | Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither knoweth him. |
| 7 | Filhinhos, ninguém vos engane. Quem pratica justiça é justo, assim como ele é justo. | [My] little children, let no man lead you astray: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous: |
| 8 | Quem comete o pecado é do diabo; porque o diabo peca desde o princípio. Para isto o Filho de Deus se manifestou: para desfazer as obras do diabo. | he that doeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. To this end was the Son of God manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. |
| 9 | Qualquer que é nascido de Deus não comete pecado; porque a sua semente permanece nele; e não pode pecar, porque é nascido de Deus. | Whosoever is begotten of God doeth no sin, because his seed abideth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is begotten of God. |
| 10 | Nisto são manifestos os filhos de Deus, e os filhos do diabo. Qualquer que não pratica a justiça, e não ama a seu irmão, não é de Deus. | In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. |
| 11 | ¶ Porque esta é a mensagem que ouvistes desde o princípio: que nos amemos uns aos outros. | For this is the message which ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another: |
| 12 | Não como Caim, que era do maligno, e matou a seu irmão. E por que causa o matou? Porque as suas obras eram más e as de seu irmão justas. | not as Cain was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's righteous. |
| 13 | Meus irmãos, não vos maravilheis, se o mundo vos odeia. | Marvel not, brethren, if the world hateth you. |
| 14 | ¶ Nós sabemos que passamos da morte para a vida, porque amamos os irmãos. Quem não ama a seu irmão permanece na morte. | We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not abideth in death. |
| 15 | Qualquer que odeia a seu irmão é homicida. E vós sabeis que nenhum homicida tem a vida eterna permanecendo nele. | Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. |
| 16 | Conhecemos o amor nisto: que ele deu a sua vida por nós, e nós devemos dar a vida pelos irmãos. | Hereby know we love, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. |
| 17 | Quem, pois, tiver bens do mundo, e, vendo o seu irmão necessitado, lhe cerrar as suas entranhas, como estará nele o amor de Deus? | But whoso hath the world's goods, and beholdeth his brother in need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how doth the love of God abide in him? |
| 18 | Meus filhinhos, não amemos de palavra, nem de língua, mas por obra e em verdade. | [My] Little children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue; but in deed and truth. |
| 19 | E nisto conhecemos que somos da verdade, e diante dele asseguraremos nossos corações; | Hereby shall we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our heart before him: |
| 20 | ¶ Sabendo que, se o nosso coração nos condena, maior é Deus do que o nosso coração, e conhece todas as coisas. | because if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. |
| 21 | Amados, se o nosso coração não nos condena, temos confiança para com Deus; | Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness toward God; |
| 22 | E qualquer coisa que lhe pedirmos, dele a receberemos, porque guardamos os seus mandamentos, e fazemos o que é agradável à sua vista. | and whatsoever we ask we receive of him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight. |
| 23 | ¶ E o seu mandamento é este: que creiamos no nome de seu Filho Jesus Cristo, e nos amemos uns aos outros, segundo o seu mandamento. | And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as he gave us commandment. |
| 24 | E aquele que guarda os seus mandamentos nele está, e ele nele. E nisto conhecemos que ele está em nós, pelo Espírito que nos tem dado. | And he that keepeth his commandments abideth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he gave us. |
