| 1 | Folge nicht bösen Leuten und wünsche nicht, bei ihnen zu sein; | Be not thou envious against evil men; Neither desire to be with them: |
| 2 | denn ihr Herz trachte nach Schaden, und ihre Lippen raten zu Unglück. | For their heart studieth oppression, And their lips talk of mischief. |
| 3 | Durch Weisheit wird ein Haus gebaut und durch Verstand erhalten. | Through wisdom is a house builded; And by understanding it is established; |
| 4 | Durch ordentliches Haushalten werden die Kammern voll aller köstlichen, lieblichen Reichtümer. | And by knowledge are the chambers filled With all precious and pleasant riches. |
| 5 | Ein weiser Mann ist stark, und ein vernünftiger Mann ist mächtig von Kräften. | A wise man is strong; Yea, a man of knowledge increaseth might |
| 6 | Denn mit Rat muß man Krieg führen; und wo viele Ratgeber sind, da ist der Sieg. | For by wise guidance thou shalt make thy war; And in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. |
| 7 | Weisheit ist dem Narren zu hoch; er darf seinen Mund im Tor nicht auftun. | Wisdom is too high for a fool: He openeth not his mouth in the gate. |
| 8 | Wer sich vornimmt, Böses zu tun, den heißt man billig einen Erzbösewicht. | He that deviseth to do evil, Men shall call him a mischief-maker. |
| 9 | Des Narren Tücke ist Sünde, und der Spötter ist ein Greuel vor den Leuten. | The thought of foolishness is sin; And the scoffer is an abomination to men. |
| 10 | Der ist nicht stark, der in der Not nicht fest ist. | If thou faint in the day of adversity, Thy strength is small. |
| 11 | Errette die, so man töten will; und entzieh dich nicht von denen, die man würgen will. | Deliver them that are carried away unto death, And those that are ready to be slain see that thou hold back. |
| 12 | Iß, mein Sohn, Honig, denn er ist gut, und Honigseim ist süß in deinem Halse. | If thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this; Doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it? And he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? And shall not he render to every man according to his work? |
| 13 | Also lerne die Weisheit für deine Seele. Wo du sie findest, so wird's hernach wohl gehen, und deine Hoffnung wird nicht umsonst sein. | My son, eat thou honey, for it is good; And the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to thy taste: |
| 14 | Laure nicht als Gottloser auf das Haus des Gerechten; verstöre seine Ruhe nicht. | So shalt thou know wisdom to be unto thy soul; If thou hast found it, then shall there be a reward, And thy hope shall not be cut off. |
| 15 | Denn ein Gerechter fällt siebenmal und steht wieder auf; aber die Gottlosen versinken im Unglück. | Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous; Destroy not his resting-place: |
| 16 | Freue dich des Falles deines Feindes nicht, und dein Herz sei nicht froh über seinem Unglück; | For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again; But the wicked are overthrown by calamity. |
| 17 | der HERR möchte es sehen, und es möchte ihm übel gefallen und er seine Zorn von ihm wenden. | Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, And let not thy heart be glad when he is overthrown; |
| 18 | Erzürne dich nicht über die Bösen und eifere nicht über die Gottlosen. | Lest Jehovah see it, and it displease him, And he turn away his wrath from him. |
| 19 | Denn der Böse hat nichts zu hoffen, und die Leuchte der Gottlosen wird verlöschen. | Fret not thyself because of evil-doers; Neither be thou envious at the wicked: |
| 20 | Mein Kind, fürchte den HERRN und den König und menge dich nicht unter die Aufrührer. | For there shall be no reward to the evil man; The lamp of the wicked shall be put out. |
| 21 | Denn ihr Verderben wird plötzlich entstehen; und wer weiß, wann beider Unglück kommt? | My son, fear thou Jehovah and the king; [And] company not with them that are given to change: |
| 22 | Dies sind auch Worte von Weisen. Die Person ansehen im Gericht ist nicht gut. | For their calamity shall rise suddenly; And the destruction from them both, who knoweth it? |
| 23 | Welche aber strafen, die gefallen wohl, und kommt ein reicher Segen auf sie. | These also are [sayings] of the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good. |
| 24 | Eine richtige Antwort ist wie ein lieblicher Kuß. | He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; Peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him: |
| 25 | Richte draußen dein Geschäft aus und bearbeite deinen Acker; darnach baue dein Haus. | But to them that rebuke [him] shall be delight, And a good blessing shall come upon them. |
| 26 | Sei nicht Zeuge ohne Ursache wider deinen Nächsten und betrüge nicht mit deinem Munde. | He kisseth the lips Who giveth a right answer. |
| 27 | Ich ging am Acker des Faulen vorüber und am Weinberg des Narren; | Prepare thy work without, And make it ready for thee in the field; And afterwards build thy house. |
| 28 | und siehe, da waren eitel Nesseln darauf, und er stand voll Disteln, und die Mauer war eingefallen. | Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause; And deceive not with thy lips. |
| 29 | Da ich das sah, nahm ich's zu Herzen und schaute und lernte daran. | Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me; I will render to the man according to his work. |
| 30 | Du willst ein wenig schlafen und ein wenig schlummern und ein wenig deine Hände zusammentun, daß du ruhest: | I went by the field of the sluggard, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; |
| 31 | aber es wird dir deine Armut kommen wie ein Wanderer und dein Mangel wie ein gewappneter Mann. | And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, The face thereof was covered with nettles, And the stone wall thereof was broken down. |
| 32 | Then I beheld, and considered well; I saw, and received instruction: | |
| 33 | [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep; | |
| 34 | So shall thy poverty come as a robber, And thy want as an armed man. |
