1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. Lõn pedig, hogy egy napon eljövének az Istennek fiai, hogy udvaroljanak az Úr elõtt. Eljöve a Sátán is közöttök, hogy udvaroljon az Úr elõtt.
2 And the LORD said to Satan, Whence comest thou? and Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down upon it. És monda az Úr a Sátánnak: Honnét jösz? És felele a Sátán az Úrnak, és monda: Körülkerültem és át meg átjártam a földet.
3 And the LORD said to Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and shunneth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. Monda pedig az Úr a Sátánnak: Észrevetted-é az én szolgámat, Jóbot? Bizony nincs a földön olyan, mint õ; feddhetetlen, igaz, istenfélõ, bûngyûlölõ. Még erõsen áll a õ feddhetetlenségében, noha ellene ingereltél, hogy ok nélkül rontsam meg õt.
4 And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, even, all that a man hath will he give for his life. És felele a Sátán az Úrnak, és monda: Bõrt bõrért; de mindent a mije van, odaad az ember az életéért.
5 But put forth thy hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. Azért bocsásd ki csak a te kezedet, és verd meg õt csontjában és testében: avagy nem átkoz-é meg szemtõl-szembe téged?
6 And the LORD said to Satan, Behold, he is in thy hand; but save his life. Monda pedig az Úr a Sátánnak: Ímé kezedbe van õ, csak életét kiméld.
7 So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to his crown. És kiméne a Sátán az Úr elõl, és megveré Jóbot undok fekélylyel talpától fogva a feje tetejéig.
8 And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself with it; and he sat down among the ashes. És võn egy cserepet, hogy azzal vakarja magát, és így ül vala a hamu közepett.
9 Then said his wife to him, Dost thou still retain thy integrity? curse God, and die. Monda pedig õ néki az õ felesége: Erõsen állasz-é még mindig a te feddhetetlenségedben? Átkozd meg az Istent, és halj meg!
10 But he said to her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips. Õ pedig monda néki: Úgy szólsz, mint szól egy a bolondok közül. Ha már a jót elvettük Istentõl, a rosszat nem vennõk-é el? Mindezekben sem vétkezék Jób az õ ajkaival.
11 Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him, and to comfort him. Mikor pedig meghallá Jóbnak három barátja mind ezt a nyomorúságot, a mely esett vala rajta: eljöve mindenik az õ lakó helyébõl: a témáni Elifáz, a sukhi Bildád és a naamai Czófár; és elvégezék, hogy együtt mennek be, hogy bánkódjanak vele és vigasztalják õt.
12 And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they raised their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads towards heaven. És a mint ráveték szemöket távolról, nem ismerék meg õt, és fenhangon zokognak vala; azután pedig megszaggatá kiki a maga köntösét, és port hintének fejökre ég felé.
13 So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word to him: for they saw that his grief was very great. És ülének vele hét napon és hét éjszakán a földön, és nem szóla egyetlen egy szót egyik sem, mert látják vala, hogy igen nagy az õ fájdalma.
