Jó 24

1 Why, seeing times are not hid from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days? Miért is nem titkolja el a Mindenható az õ [büntetésének] idejét, és miért is nem látják meg az õt ismerõk az õ [ítéletének] napjait?!
2 Some remove the landmarks: they violently take away flocks, and their feed. A határokat odább tolják, a nyájat elrabolják és legeltetik.
3 They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge. Az árvák szamarát elhajtják, [és] az özvegynek ökrét zálogba viszik.
4 They turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together. Lelökik az útról a szegényeket, [és] a föld nyomorultjai együtt lappanganak.
5 Behold, as wild asses in the desert, they go forth to their work; rising betimes for a prey: the wilderness yieldeth food for them and for their children. Ímé, mint a vad szamarak a sivatagban, úgy mennek ki munkájukra élelmet keresni; a puszta ad nékik kenyeret fiaik számára.
6 They reap every one his corn in the field: and they gather the vintage of the wicked. A mezõn a más vetését aratják, és a gonosznak szõlõjét szedik.
7 They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold. Mezítelenül hálnak, testi ruha nélkül, még a hidegben sincs takarójuk.
8 They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter. A hegyi zápor csurog le rólok, s hajlékuk nem lévén, a sziklát ölelik.
9 They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor. Elszakítják az emlõtõl az árvát, és a szegényen levõt zálogba viszik.
10 They cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaf from the hungry; Mezítelenül járnak, ruha nélkül, és éhesen vonszolják a kévét.
11 Who make oil within their walls, and tread their wine-presses, and suffer thirst. Az õ kerítéseik közt ütik az olajat, és tapossák a kádakat, de szomjuhoznak.
12 Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not folly to them. A városból haldoklók rimánkodnak, a megsebzettek lelke kiált, de Isten nem törõdik e méltatlansággal.
13 They are of those that rebel against the light; they know not its ways, nor abide in its paths. Ezek pártot ütöttek a világosság ellen, utait nem is ismerik, nem ülnek annak ösvényein.
14 The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief. Napkeltekor fölkel a gyilkos, megöli a szegényt és szûkölködõt, éjjel pedig olyan, mint a tolvaj.
15 The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguiseth his face. A paráznának szeme pedig az alkonyatot lesi, mondván: Ne nézzen szem reám, és arczára álarczot teszen.
16 In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the day-time: they know not the light. Setétben tör be a házakba; nappal elzárkóznak, nem szeretik a világosságot.
17 For the morning is to them even as the shades of death: if one knoweth them, they are in the terrors of the shades of death. Sõt inkább a reggel nékik olyan, mint a halálnak árnyéka, mert megbarátkoztak a halál árnyékának félelmeivel.
18 He is swift as the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth: he beholdeth not the way of the vineyards. Könnyen siklik tova a víz színén, birtoka átkozott a földön, nem tér a szõlõkbe vivõ útra.
19 Drouth and heat consume the snow-waters: so doth the grave those who have sinned. Szárazság és hõség nyeli el a hó vizét, a pokol azokat, a kik vétkeznek.
20 The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; he shall be no more remembered; and wickedness shall be broken as a tree. Elfelejti õt az anyaméh, féregnek lesz édességévé, nem emlékeznek róla többé, és összetörik, mint a reves fa,
21 He oppresseth the barren that beareth not: and doeth not good to the widow. A ki megrontotta a meddõt, a ki nem szül, és az özvegygyel jót nem tett.
22 He draweth also the mighty with his power: he riseth up, and no man is sure of life. De megtámogatja erejével a hatalmasokat; felkel az, pedig nem bízott már az élethez.
23 Though it is given him to be in safety, on which he resteth; yet his eyes are upon their ways. Biztonságot ad néki, hogy támaszkodjék, de szemei vigyáznak azoknak útjaira.
24 They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all others, and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn. Magasra emelkednek, egy kevés idõ és már nincsenek! Alásülylyednek, mint akárki és elenyésznek; és levágattatnak, mint a búzakalász.
25 And if it is not so now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech of no worth? Avagy nem így van-é? Ki hazudtolhatna meg engem, és tehetné semmivé beszédemet?
