1 Call now, if there is any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn? Kiálts csak! Van-é, a ki felelne néked? A szentek közül melyikhez fordulsz?
2 For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one. Mert a bolondot boszúság öli meg, az együgyût pedig buzgóság veszti el.
3 I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation. Láttam, hogy egy bolond gyökerezni kezdett, de nagy hamar megátkoztam szép hajlékát.
4 His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them. Fiai messze estek a szabadulástól: a kapuban megrontatnak, mert nincs, a ki kimentse õket.
5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance. A mit learatnak néki, az éhezõ eszi meg, a töviskerítésbõl is elviszi azt, kincseiket tõrvetõk nyelik el.
6 Although affliction cometh not forth from the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground; Mert nem porból támad a veszedelem s nem földbõl sarjad a nyomorúság!
7 Yet man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward. Hanem nyomorúságra születik az ember, a mint felfelé szállnak a parázs szikrái.
8 I would seek to God, and to God would I commit my cause: Azért én a Mindenhatóhoz folyamodnám, az Istenre bíznám ügyemet.
9 Who doeth great things and unsearchable; wonderful things without number: A ki nagy, végére mehetetlen dolgokat mûvel, és csudákat, a miknek száma nincsen.
10 Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields: A ki esõt ad a földnek színére, és a mezõkre vizet bocsát.
11 To set on high those that are low: that those who mourn may be exalted to safety. Hogy az alázatosokat felmagasztalja, és a gyászolókat szabadulással vidámítsa.
12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. A ki semmivé teszi a csalárdok gondolatait, hogy szándékukat kezeik véghez ne vihessék.
13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong. A ki megfogja a bölcseket az õ csalárdságukban, és a hamisak tanácsát hiábavalóvá teszi.
14 They meet with darkness in the day-time, and grope in the noon-day as in the night. Nappal sötétségre bukkannak, és délben is tapogatva járnak, mint éjszaka.
15 But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty. A ki megszabadítja a fegyvertõl, az õ szájoktól, és az erõsnek kezébõl a szegényt;
16 So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth. Hogy legyen reménysége a szegénynek, és a hamisság befogja az õ száját.
17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: Ímé, boldog ember az, a kit Isten megdorgál; azért a Mindenhatónak büntetését meg ne utáljad!
18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole. Mert õ megsebez, de be is kötöz, összezúz, de kezei meg is gyógyítanak.
19 He will deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. Hat bajodból megszabadít, és a hetedikben sem illet a veszedelem téged.
20 In famine he will redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword. Az éhínségben megment téged a haláltól, és a háborúban a fegyveres kezektõl.
21 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh. A nyelvek ostora elõl rejtve leszel, és nem kell félned, hogy a pusztulás rád következik.
22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth. A pusztulást és drágaságot neveted, és a fenevadaktól sem félsz.
23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee. Mert a mezõn való kövekkel is frigyed lesz, és a mezei vad is békességben lesz veled.
24 And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle will be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin. Majd megtudod, hogy békességben lesz a te sátorod, s ha megvizsgálod a te hajlékodat, nem találsz benne hiányt.
25 Thou shalt know also that thy seed will be great, and thy offspring as the grass of the earth. Majd megtudod, hogy a te magod megszaporodik, és a te sarjadékod, mint a mezõn a fû.
26 Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, as a shock of corn cometh in in its season. Érett korban térsz a koporsóba, a mint a maga idején takaríttatik be a learatott gabona.
