The Spirit versus the Flesh

16 I say, then, walk by the Spirit  * and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh.

13 For you were called  * to be free, brothers and sisters; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity  * for the flesh, but serve one another through love.

Carry One Another’s Burdens

1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is overtaken in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual, restore such a person with a gentle  * spirit,  *,* watching out for yourselves so that you also won’t be tempted.  *

41 Stay awake and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

13 And do not bring us into*  temptation,*

but deliver us from the evil one.*,*

8 Be sober-minded,  * be alert.  * Your adversary the devil  * is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.

16 For everything in the world — the lust of the flesh,  * the lust of the eyes,  * and the pride  * in one’s possessions — is not from the Father, but is from the world.

17 And the world with its lust is passing away,  * but the one who does the will of God  * remains forever.  *

5 Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity,  * lust,  * evil desire, and greed,  * which is idolatry.  *

1 I have made a covenant with my eyes.  *

How then could I look at a young woman?  *,*

28 Can a man walk on burning coals

without scorching his feet?

26 He is filled with craving  * all day long,

but the righteous give and don’t hold back.  *

5 As soon as your eyes fly to it, it disappears,  *

for it makes wings for itself

and flies like an eagle to the sky.

10 For the love of money is a root  * of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith  * and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Glorifying God in Body and Spirit

12 "Everything is permissible  * for me," but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me," but I will not be mastered by anything.

2 But because sexual immorality is so common,  *,* each man should have sexual relations with his own wife,  * and each woman should have sexual relations with her own husband.

13 No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful;  * he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation he will also provide the way out  * so that you may be able to bear it.

Longing for God

1 As a deer longs for flowing streams,

so I long for you, God.  *

8 Yes, Lord, we wait for you

in the path of your judgments.

Our desire is for your name and renown.  *

4 By these he has given us very great and precious promises,  * so that through them you may share in the divine nature,  * escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire.

2 You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and wage war.  * You do not have because you do not ask.

13 No one undergoing a trial should say, "I am being tempted by God," since God is not tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone.

Sin’s Use of the Law

7 What should we say then?  * Is the law sin? Absolutely not!  * But I would not have known sin if it were not for the law.  * For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.*,*

4 Marriage is to be honored by all and the marriage bed kept undefiled, because God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.  *

21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
