Live by the Spirit and Reject the Deeds of the Flesh

16 But I say, live by the Spirit, and you will never carry out the desire of the flesh.

13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not let your freedom become an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Carry One Another’s Burdens

1 Brothers, even if a person is caught in some trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a person in a spirit of humility, looking out for yourself, lest you also be tempted.

41 Stay awake and pray that you will not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak!"

13 And do not bring us into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.*

8 Be sober; be on the alert. Your adversary the devil walks around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

16 because everything that is in the world—the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the arrogance of material possessions—is not from the Father, but is from the world.

17 And the world is passing away, and its desire,* but the one who does the will of God remains forever*.

Put Off the Old Behavior

5 Therefore put to death what is earthly in you*: sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustful passion, evil desire, and greediness, which is idolatry,

Job’s Final Defense Continued

1 "I made a covenant with my eyes,

so* how could I look closely upon a virgin?

28 If a man walks upon the hot coals,

will his feet not be burned?

26 All day* he craves a craving,

but the righteous will give and not hold back.

5 Your eyes will alight* on it, but there is nothing to it,

for suddenly it will make for itself wings

like an eagle and it will be exhausted in the heavens.

10 For the love of money is a root of all evil, by which some, because they* desire it, have gone astray from the faith and have pierced themselves with many pains.

Avoid Sexual Immorality

12 All things are permitted for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are permitted for me, but I will not be controlled by anything.

2 But because of sexual immorality, let each man have* his own wife and let each woman have her own husband.

13 Temptation has not come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful, who will not permit you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but will also make a way out together with the temptation, so that you may be able to endure it.

Hope in God in the Midst of Despair

1 As a deer longs for streams of water,

so my soul longs for you, O God.

8 Surely we wait for you in the path of your judgments, Yahweh,

for your name and renown are the desire of the soul.

4 through which things he has bestowed on us his precious and very great promises, so that through these you may become sharers of the divine nature after* escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire,

2 You desire and do not have; you murder and are filled with envy, and are not able to obtain; you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.

13 No one who is being tempted should say, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted* by evil, and he himself tempts no one.

Knowledge of Sin Comes through the Law

7 What then shall we say? Is the law sin? May it never be! But I would not have known sin except through the law, for I would not have known covetousness if the law had not said, "Do not covet."*

4 Marriage must be held in honor by all, and the marriage bed be undefiled, because God will judge sexually immoral people and adulterers.

21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
