4 For whatever was written beforehand was written for our instruction, in order that through patient endurance and through the encouragement of the scriptures we may have hope.

Prologue

1 Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

2 To know wisdom and instruction,

to understand sayings of understanding,

3 to gain insightful instruction,*

righteousness and justice and equity,

4 to give shrewdness* to the simple,

knowledge and purpose* to the young,

5 may the wise hear and increase learning,

and the one who understands gain direction,*

6 to understand a proverb and an expression,

words of wisdom and their riddles.

7 Fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge;

wisdom and instruction, fools despise.

5 And you shall love Yahweh your God with all of your heart* and with all of your soul* and with all of your might. 6 And these words that I am commanding you today* shall be on* your heart.*7 And you shall recite them to your children, and you shall talk about them at the time of your living in your house and at the time of your going on the road and at the time of your lying down and at the time of your rising up.

Lecture Against Gang Behavior

8 My child, may you keep* your father’s instruction,

and do not reject your mother’s teachings,

9 for they are a garland of favor for your head,

and pendants for your neck.

Commandment and Instruction as Guardians

20 My child, keep the commandment of your father,

and do not disregard the instruction of your mother.

21 Bind them on your heart continually;

tie them upon your neck.

22 When you walk,* she* will lead you,

When you lie down,* she will watch over you,

and when you awake, she will converse with you.

23 For like a lamp is a commandment, and instruction is light,

and the way of life* is the reproof of discipline,

5 Get wisdom and insight;

do not forget and do not turn from the sayings of my mouth.

6 Do not forsake her—then she will guard you;

love her and she will keep you.

7 The beginning of wisdom: Get wisdom!

With all that is in your possession, gain insight.

8 Cherish her and she will exalt you;

she will honor you if you embrace her.

13 Seize the instruction! Do not let go!

Guard her, for she is your life.

14 In the path of the wicked do not go;

do not walk in the way of those who do evil.

23 With all vigilance, keep your heart,

for from it comes the source* of life.

24 Remove from yourself deceitful speech,*

and abolish devious talk* from yourself.

25 May your eyes look forward*

and your gaze be straight before you.

26 May the path of your foot be balanced

and all your ways be sure.

27 Do not swerve right or left;

remove your foot from evil.

14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,

in order to avoid the snares of death.

Foolishness’ Banquet

10 The start of wisdom is fear of Yahweh,

and knowledge of the Holy One,* insight.

God’s Faithfulness in Israel’s History

1 Listen, O my people, to my teaching.

Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

2 I will offer* a parable with my mouth.

I will pour out riddles from long ago,

3 that we have heard and known,

and our ancestors* have told us.

4 We will not hide them from their children,*

telling the next generation the praises of Yahweh,

and his power and his wonders that he has done.

10 Moreover, that entire generation was gathered to their* ancestors,* and another generation grew up after them who did not know Yahweh or the work he had done for Israel.*

Honoring Worthy Elders and Dealing With Sinners

17 The elders who lead well must be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor by speaking and teaching. 18 For the scripture says, "You must not muzzle an ox while it* is threshing,"* and "The worker is worthy of his wages."*

16 But avoid pointless chatter, for it will progress to greater ungodliness, 17 and their message will spread* like gangrene, among whom are Hymenaeus and Philetus,

9 Everyone who goes too far and does not remain in the teaching of Christ does not have God. The one who remains in the teaching—this person has both the Father and the Son.

14 Now when the feast was already half over,* Jesus went to the temple courts* and began to teach.*15 Then the Jews were astonished, saying, "How does this man possess knowledge,* because he* has not been taught?" 16 So Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not mine, but is from the one who sent me. 17 If anyone wants to do his will, he will know about my* teaching, whether it is from God or I am speaking from myself. 18 The one who speaks from himself seeks his own glory. But the one who seeks the glory of the one who sent him—this one is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
