31 But those who trust in the Lord for help

will find their strength renewed.

They will rise on wings like eagles;

they will run and not get weary;

they will walk and not grow weak.

18 And yet the Lord is waiting to be merciful to you. He is ready to take pity on you because he always does what is right. Happy are those who put their trust in the Lord.

the Lord's goodness in this present life.

1 The Lord is my light and my salvation;

I will fear no one.

The Lord protects me from all danger;

I will never be afraid.

2 When evil people attack me and try to kill me,

they stumble and fall.

3 Even if a whole army surrounds me,

I will not be afraid;

even if enemies attack me,

I will still trust God.*

4 I have asked the Lord for one thing;

one thing only do I want:

to live in the Lord's house all my life,

to marvel there at his goodness,

and to ask for his guidance.

5 In times of trouble he will shelter me;

he will keep me safe in his Temple

and make me secure on a high rock.

6 So I will triumph over my enemies around me.

With shouts of joy I will offer sacrifices in his Temple;

I will sing, I will praise the Lord.

7 Hear me, Lord, when I call to you!

Be merciful and answer me!

8 When you said, "Come worship me,"

I answered, "I will come, Lord."

9 Don’t hide yourself from me!

Don’t be angry with me;

don’t turn your servant away.

You have been my help;

don’t leave me, don’t abandon me,

O God, my savior.

10 My father and mother may abandon me,

but the Lord will take care of me.

11 Teach me, Lord, what you want me to do,

and lead me along a safe path,

because I have many enemies.

12 Don’t abandon me to my enemies,

who attack me with lies and threats.

13 I know that I will live to see

the Lord's goodness in this present life.

1 I waited patiently for the Lord's help;

then he listened to me and heard my cry.

2 He pulled me out of a dangerous pit,

out of the deadly quicksand.

He set me safely on a rock

and made me secure.

3 He taught me to sing a new song,

a song of praise to our God.

Many who see this will take warning

and will put their trust in the Lord.

4 Happy are those who trust the Lord,

who do not turn to idols

or join those who worship false gods.

5 You have done many things for us, O Lord our God;

there is no one like you!

You have made many wonderful plans for us.

I could never speak of them all—

their number is so great!

6 *You do not want sacrifices and offerings;

you do not ask for animals burned whole on the altar

or for sacrifices to take away sins.

Instead, you have given me ears to hear you,

7 and so I answered, "Here I am;

your instructions for me are in the book of the Law.*

8 How I love to do your will, my God!

I keep your teaching in my heart."

9 In the assembly of all your people, Lord,

I told the good news that you save us.

You know that I will never stop telling it.

10 I have not kept the news of salvation to myself;

I have always spoken of your faithfulness and help.

In the assembly of all your people I have not been silent

about your loyalty and constant love.

11 Lord, I know you will never stop being merciful to me.

Your love and loyalty will always keep me safe.

12 I am surrounded by many troubles—

too many to count!

My sins have caught up with me,

and I can no longer see;

they are more than the hairs of my head,

and I have lost my courage.

13 Save me, Lord! Help me now!

14 May those who try to kill me

be completely defeated and confused.

May those who are happy because of my troubles

be turned back and disgraced.

20 We put our hope in the Lord;

he is our protector and our help.

21 We are glad because of him;

we trust in his holy name.

22 May your constant love be with us, Lord,

as we put our hope in you.

5 I wait eagerly for the Lord's help,

and in his word I trust.

6 I wait for the Lord

more eagerly than sentries wait for the dawn—

than sentries wait for the dawn.

5 I depend on God alone;

I put my hope in him.

34 Put your hope in the Lord and obey his commands;

he will honor you by giving you the land,

and you will see the wicked driven out.

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. 6 Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way.

3 We also boast* of our troubles, because we know that trouble produces endurance, 4 endurance brings God’s approval, and his approval creates hope.

11,12 May you be made strong with all the strength which comes from his glorious power, so that you may be able to endure everything with patience. And with joy give thanks to* the Father, who has made you fit to have your share of what God has reserved for his people in the kingdom of light.

7 Be patient, then, my friends, until the Lord comes. See how patient farmers are as they wait for their land to produce precious crops. They wait patiently for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You also must be patient. Keep your hopes high, for the day of the Lord’s coming is near.

11 *We call them happy because they endured. You have heard of Job’s patience, and you know how the Lord provided for him in the end. For the Lord is full of mercy and compassion.

22 Now that by your obedience to the truth you have purified yourselves and have come to have a sincere love for other believers, love one another earnestly with all your heart.*23 For through the living and eternal word of God you have been born again as the children of a parent who is immortal, not mortal. 24 *As the scripture says,

"All human beings are like grass,

and all their glory is like wild flowers.

The grass withers, and the flowers fall,

25 but the word of the Lord remains forever."

This word is the Good News that was proclaimed to you.

9 The Lord is not slow to do what he has promised, as some think. Instead, he is patient with you, because he does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants all to turn away from their sins.

1 *"At that time the Kingdom of heaven will be like this. Once there were ten young women who took their oil lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and the other five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any extra oil with them, 4 while the wise ones took containers full of oil for their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was late in coming, so they began to nod and fall asleep.

6 "It was already midnight when the cry rang out, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come and meet him!’ 7 The ten young women woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 Then the foolish ones said to the wise ones, ‘Let us have some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ 9 ‘No, indeed,’ the wise ones answered, ‘there is not enough for you and for us. Go to the store and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 So the foolish ones went off to buy some oil; and while they were gone, the bridegroom arrived. The five who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was closed.

11 *"Later the others arrived. ‘Sir, sir! Let us in!’ they cried out. 12 ‘Certainly not! I don’t know you,’ the bridegroom answered."

13 And Jesus concluded, "Watch out, then, because you do not know the day or the hour.
