11 The people in Berea were much nicer than those in Thessalonica, and they gladly accepted the message. Day after day they studied the Scriptures to see if these things were true.

15 Do your best to win God’s approval as a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed and who teaches only the true message.

15 Since childhood, you have known the Holy Scriptures that are able to make you wise enough to have faith in Christ Jesus and be saved. 16 Everything in the Scriptures is God’s Word. All of it is useful for teaching and helping people and for correcting them and showing them how to live. 17 The Scriptures train God’s servants to do all kinds of good deeds.

13 Until I arrive, be sure to keep on reading the Scriptures in worship, and don’t stop preaching and teaching.

39 *You search the Scriptures, because you think you will find eternal life in them. The Scriptures tell about me,

6-8 *Long ago I promised the ancestors of Israel that I would give this land to their descendants. So be strong and brave! Be careful to do everything my servant Moses taught you. Never stop reading The Book of the Law* he gave you. Day and night you must think about what it says. If you obey it completely, you and Israel will be able to take this land.

by learning to respect

your perfect laws.

8,9 God helped Ezra, and he arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month* of that seventh year, after leaving Babylonia on the first day of the first month.*10 Ezra had spent his entire life studying and obeying the Law of the Lord and teaching it to others.

5 *So love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength. 6 *Memorize his laws 7 and tell them to your children over and over again. Talk about them all the time, whether you’re at home or walking along the road or going to bed at night, or getting up in the morning. 8 Write down copies and tie them to your wrists and foreheads to help you obey them. 9 Write these laws on the door frames of your homes and on your town gates.

Worship Only the Lord

Moses said to Israel:

18 The official copy of God’s laws* will be kept by the priests of the Levi tribe. So, as soon as anyone becomes king, he must go to the priests and write out a copy of these laws while they watch. 19 Each day the king must read and obey these laws, so that he will learn to worship the Lord with fear and trembling 20 and not think that he’s better than everyone else.

If the king completely obeys the Lord's commands, he and his descendants will rule Israel for many years.

How Proverbs Can Be Used

1 *These are the proverbs

of King Solomon of Israel,

the son of David.

2 Proverbs will teach you

wisdom and self-control

and how to understand

sayings with deep meanings.

3 You will learn what is right

and honest and fair.

4 From these, an ordinary person

can learn to be smart,

and young people can gain

knowledge and good sense.

5 If you are already wise,

you will become even wiser.

And if you are smart,

you will learn to understand

6 proverbs and sayings,

as well as words of wisdom,

and all kinds of riddles.

Trust God

1 My child, remember

my teachings and instructions

and obey them completely.

2 They will help you live

a long and prosperous life.

13 Hold firmly to my teaching

and never let go.

It will mean life for you.

23 The Law of the Lord is a lamp,

and its teachings

shine brightly.

Correction and self-control

will lead you through life.

6 You priests have rejected me,

and my people are destroyed

by refusing to obey.

Now I’ll reject you and forget

your children, because you

have forgotten my Law.

20 what it should do."

None of those who talk like that will live to see the light of day!

24 Jesus answered:

You are completely wrong! You don’t know what the Scriptures teach. And you don’t know anything about the power of God.

4 *And the Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope.

17 My dear friends, you have been warned ahead of time! So don’t let the errors of evil people lead you down the wrong path and make you lose your balance. 18 Let the gift of undeserved grace and the understanding that come from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ help you keep on growing. Praise Jesus now and forever! Amen.*

10 Some prophets told how God would treat you with undeserved grace, and they searched hard to find out more about the way you would be saved. 11 The Spirit of Christ was in them and was telling them how Christ would suffer and would then be given great honor. So they searched to find out exactly who Christ would be and when this would happen.
