The Temptation of Jesus

Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert to be tempted by the Devil. After spending forty days and nights without food, Jesus was hungry.

"It was because you do not have enough faith," answered Jesus. "I assure you that if you have faith as big as a mustard seed, you can say to this hill, Go from here to there!and it will go. You could do anything!"

Teaching about Fasting

"And when you fast, do not put on a sad face as the hypocrites do. They neglect their appearance so that everyone will see that they are fasting. I assure you, they have already been paid in full. When you go without food, wash your face and comb your hair, so that others cannot know that you are fastingonly your Father, who is unseen, will know. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you.

where he was tempted by the Devil for forty days. In all that time he ate nothing, so that he was hungry when it was over.

O jejum nas Escrituras

Ao longo da Bíblia, grandes homens e mulheres de fé jejuaram em momentos decisivos — buscando a Deus com urgência e devoção.

Moses stayed there with the Lord forty days and nights, eating and drinking nothing. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenantthe Ten Commandments.

And I prayed earnestly to the Lord God, pleading with him, fasting, wearing sackcloth, and sitting in ashes.

I did not eat any rich food or any meat, drink any wine, or comb my hair until the three weeks were past.

"Go and get all the Jews in Susa together; hold a fast and pray for me. Don’t eat or drink anything for three days and nights. My servant women and I will be doing the same. After that, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. If I must die for doing it, I will die."

When I heard all this, I sat down and wept.

For several days I mourned and did not eat. I prayed to God,

Ezra Leads the People in Fasting and Prayer

There by the Ahava Canal I gave orders for us all to fast and humble ourselves before our God and to ask him to lead us on our journey and protect us and our children and all our possessions.

So we fasted and prayed for God to protect us, and he answered our prayers.

So we fasted and prayed for God to protect us, and he answered our prayers.

David prayed to God that the child would get well. He refused to eat anything, and every night he went into his room and spent the night lying on the floor.

The people of Nineveh believed God’s message. So they decided that everyone should fast, and all the people, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth to show that they had repented.

When the king of Nineveh heard about it, he got up from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth, and sat down in ashes. He sent out a proclamation to the people of Nineveh: "This is an order from the king and his officials: No one is to eat anything; all persons, cattle, and sheep are forbidden to eat or drink. All persons and animals must wear sackcloth. Everyone must pray earnestly to God and must give up their wicked behavior and their evil actions. Perhaps God will change his mind; perhaps he will stop being angry, and we will not die!"

God saw what they did; he saw that they had given up their wicked behavior. So he changed his mind and did not punish them as he had said he would.

O jejum que Deus escolheu

Isaías revela o jejum que agrada a Deus: soltar as cadeias da injustiça, libertar os oprimidos e repartir o pão com o faminto.

The people ask, "Why should we fast if the Lord never notices? Why should we go without food if he pays no attention?"

The Lord says to them, "The truth is that at the same time you fast, you pursue your own interests and oppress your workers. Your fasting makes you violent, and you quarrel and fight. Do you think this kind of fasting will make me listen to your prayers? When you fast, you make yourselves suffer; you bow your heads low like a blade of grass and spread out sackcloth and ashes to lie on. Is that what you call fasting? Do you think I will be pleased with that?

"The kind of fasting I want is this: Remove the chains of oppression and the yoke of injustice, and let the oppressed go free.

A Call to Repentance

"But even now," says the Lord,

"repent sincerely and return to me

with fasting and weeping and mourning.

and all the people of Judah

A igreja primitiva

Os apóstolos jejuavam antes de decisões importantes. O jejum acompanhava a consagração de líderes e o envio de missionários.

While they were serving the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said to them, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul, to do the work to which I have called them."

In each church they appointed elders, and with prayers and fasting they commended them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.

Praticando o jejum

Quando jejuares, unge a cabeça e lava o rosto. O jejum é entre você e Deus — não para impressionar os homens, mas para buscar ao Senhor.

There was a very old prophet, a widow named Anna, daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher. She had been married for only seven years and was now eighty-four years old. She never left the Temple; day and night she worshiped God, fasting and praying.

The Question about Fasting

Some people said to Jesus, "The disciples of John fast frequently and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same; but your disciples eat and drink."

Jesus answered, "Do you think you can make the guests at a wedding party go without food as long as the bridegroom is with them? Of course not! But the day will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast."

After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn’t we drive the spirit out?"

"Only prayer can drive this kind out," answered Jesus; "nothing else can."

"Only prayer can drive this kind out," answered Jesus; "nothing else can."

There has been work and toil; often I have gone without sleep; I have been hungry and thirsty; I have often been without enough food, shelter, or clothing.

But when they were sick, I dressed in mourning;

I deprived myself of food;

I prayed with my head bowed low,
