Death and life are in the power of the tongue: they that love it, shall eat the fruits thereof.

For in many things we all offend. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man. He is able also with a bridle to lead about the whole body.

For if we put bits into the mouths of horses, that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body. Behold also ships, whereas they are great, and are driven by strong winds, yet are they turned about with a small helm, whithersoever the force of the governor willeth. Even so the tongue is indeed a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold how small a fire kindleth a great wood. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is placed among our members, which defileth the whole body, and inflameth the wheel of our nativity, being set on fire by hell.

For every nature of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of the rest, is tamed, and hath been tamed, by the nature of man: But the tongue no man can tame, an unquiet evil, full of deadly poison.

By it we bless God and the Father: and by it we curse men, who are made after the likeness of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth, out of the same hole, sweet and bitter water? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear grapes; or the vine, figs? So neither can the salt water yield sweet.

Palavras sábias

A língua branda quebra até ossos. A palavra certa no tempo certo é como maçãs de ouro em salvas de prata.

By patience a prince shall be appeased, and a soft tongue shall break hardness.

There is that promiseth, and is pricked as it were with a sword of conscience: but the tongue of the wise is health.

The lip of truth shall be steadfast for ever: but he that is a hasty witness, frameth a lying tongue.

In the multitude of words there shall not want sin: but he that refraineth his lips is most wise.

Even a fool, if he will hold his peace shall be counted wise: and if he close his lips, a man of understanding.

Disciplinar a fala

Quem guarda a boca e a língua guarda a sua alma de angústias. A religião sem controle da língua é vã.

And if any man think himself to be religious, not bridling his tongue, but deceiving his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

Unto the end, a psalm for David himself.

They repaid me evil for good: to the depriving me of my soul.

But as for me, when they were troublesome to me, I was clothed with haircloth. I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer shall be turned into my bosom.

They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent: the venom of saps is under their lips.

My help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

Consider, and hear me, O Lord my God. Enlighten my eyes that I never sleep in death:

I have declared to thee my life: thou hast set my tears in thy sight, As also in thy promise.

Toda língua confessará

Ao nome de Jesus todo joelho se dobrará e toda língua confessará que Jesus Cristo é Senhor, para glória de Deus Pai.

For which cause God also hath exalted him, and hath given him a name which is above all names: That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth: And that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father.

If I speak with the tongues of men, and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall render an account for it in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of Adam were building. And he said: Behold, it is one people, and all have one tongue: and they have begun to do this, neither will they leave off from their designs, till they accomplish them in deed. Come ye, therefore, let us go down, and there confound their tongue, that they may not understand one another’s speech. And so the Lord scattered them from that place into all lands, and they ceased to build the city. And therefore the name thereof was called Babel, because there the language of the whole earth was confounded: and from thence the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of all countries.
