Gabriel Predicts Jesus’s Birth

26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel  * was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,  *27 to a virgin engaged  *,* to a man named Joseph, of the house of David.  * The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And the angel came to her and said, "Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you."  *

30 Then the angel told her, "Do not be afraid, Mary,  * for you have found favor with God.  *31 Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.  *32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High,  * and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.  *33 He will reign over the house of Jacob  * forever, and his kingdom will have no end."  *

The Nativity of the Messiah

18 The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged  * to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant from the Holy Spirit.  *

Mary’s Praise

46 And Mary said:

My soul magnifies the Lord,  *

47 and my spirit rejoices  * in God my Savior,  *

48 because he has looked with favor

on the humble condition of his servant.

Surely, from now on all generations

will call me blessed,  *

49 because the Mighty One  *

has done great things for me,  *

and his name  * is holy.

50 His mercy is from generation to generation  *

on those who fear him.

51 He has done a mighty deed with his arm;  *

he has scattered the proud

because of the thoughts of their hearts;  *

52 he has toppled the mighty from their thrones

and exalted the lowly.  *

53 He has satisfied the hungry with good things  *

and sent the rich away empty.

54 He has helped his servant Israel,

remembering his mercy

55 to Abraham and his descendants  *  forever,  *

just as he spoke to our ancestors.

4 Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth  * in Galilee, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem,  * because he was of the house and family line of David,  *5 to be registered along with Mary, who was engaged to him  * and was pregnant. 6 While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 Then she gave birth to her firstborn son, and she wrapped him tightly in cloth and laid him in a manger,  * because there was no guest room available for them.

19 But Mary was treasuring up all these things in her heart  * and meditating on them.

34 Then Simeon blessed them and told his mother Mary, "Indeed, this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel  * and to be a sign that will be opposed  *  —  35 and a sword will pierce your own soul — that the thoughts  * of many hearts may be revealed."

48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him,  * "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you."  *

49 "Why were you searching for me? " he asked them. "Didn’t you know that it was necessary for me to be in my Father’s house? "*50 But they did not understand what he said to them.  *

In Favor with God and with People

51 Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. His mother kept all these things in her heart.  *

3 When the wine ran out, Jesus’s mother told him, "They don’t have any wine."

4 "What has this concern of yours to do with me,*,*woman? "* Jesus asked. "My hour has not yet come."

5 "Do whatever he tells you," his mother told the servants.

Jesus’s Provision for His Mother

25 Standing  * by the cross  * of Jesus were his mother,  * his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.  *26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved  * standing there, he said to his mother, "Woman, here is your son."27 Then he said to the disciple, "Here is your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

True Relationships

31 His  * mother  * and his brothers  * came, and standing outside, they sent word to him and called him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him and told him, "Look, your mother, your brothers,  * and your sisters  * are outside asking for you."

33 He replied to them, "Who are my mother and my brothers? "34 Looking at those sitting in a circle around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers!*35 Whoever does the will of God*is my brother and sister and mother."

55 Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?  * Isn’t his mother called Mary, and his brothers James,  * Joseph,  * Simon, and Judas?  *56 And his sisters, aren’t they all with us? So where does he get all these things? "

14 They all were continually united  * in prayer,  * along with the women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.  *
