Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month the angel *Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named *Nazareth, 27 *to a virgin betrothed* to a man whose name was Joseph, *of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, "Greetings, *O favored one, *the Lord is with you!"*

30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for *you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, *you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and *you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of *the Most High. And the Lord God *will give to him the throne of *his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob *forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end."

The Birth of Jesus Christ

18 Now the birth of *Jesus Christ* took place in this way. *When his mother Mary had been betrothed* to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child *from the Holy Spirit.

Mary’s Song of Praise: The Magnificat

46 And Mary said,

*"My *soul *magnifies the Lord,

47 *and my *spirit rejoices in *God my Savior,

48 for *he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

For behold, from now on all generations *will call me blessed;

49 for *he who is mighty *has done great things for me,

and *holy is his name.

50 And *his mercy is for those who fear him

from generation to generation.

51 *He has shown strength with his arm;

*he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;

52 *he has brought down the mighty from their thrones

*and exalted those of humble estate;

53 he has filled *the hungry with good things,

and the rich *he has sent away empty.

54 He has *helped *his servant Israel,

*in remembrance of his mercy,

55 *as he spoke to our fathers,

*to Abraham and to his offspring forever."

4 And Joseph also went up *from Galilee, from the town of *Nazareth, to Judea, to *the city of David, which is called *Bethlehem, *because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed,* who was with child. 6 And *while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and *wrapped him in swaddling cloths and *laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in *the inn.*

19 But *Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.

34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is appointed *for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign *that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed."

48 And when his parents* saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, *your father and I have been searching for you in great distress." 49 And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that *I must be in *my Father’s house?"*50 And *they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And *his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.

3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." 4 And Jesus said to her, *"Woman, *what does this have to do with me? *My hour has not yet come."5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

25 *but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and *the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, *"Woman, behold, your son!"27 Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to *his own home.

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

31 *And his mother and his *brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. 32 And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, "Your mother and your brothers* are outside, seeking you." 33 And he answered them, "Who are my mother and my brothers?"34 And *looking about at those who sat around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers!35 *For whoever *does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother."

55 *Is not this *the carpenter’s* son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not *his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"

14 All these *with one accord *were devoting themselves to prayer, together with *the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and *his brothers.*
