After this, knowing that everything had now been accomplished, and to fulfill the Scripture, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." A jar of sour wine was sitting there. So they soaked a sponge in the wine, put it on a stalk of hyssop, and lifted it to His mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished." And bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit.

When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided His garments into four parts, one for each soldier, with the tunic remaining. It was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it. Instead, let us cast lots to see who will get it." This was to fulfill the Scripture:

"They divided My garments among them,

and cast lots for My clothing."

So that is what the soldiers did.

Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother and her sister, as well as Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, "Woman, here is your son." Then He said to the disciple, "Here is your mother." So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.

When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals, one on His right and the other on His left.

Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up His garments by casting lots.

The people stood watching, and the rulers sneered at Him, saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen One."

The soldiers also mocked Him and came up to offer Him sour wine. "If You are the King of the Jews," they said, "save Yourself!"

Above Him was posted an inscription:

THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

One of the criminals who hung there heaped abuse on Him. "Are You not the Christ?" he said. "Save Yourself and us!"

But the other one rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same judgment? We are punished justly, for we are receiving what our actions deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!"

And Jesus said to him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."

From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"

At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, and the rocks were split. The tombs broke open, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised. After Jesus’ resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many people.

When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified and said, "Truly this was the Son of God."

But He was pierced for our transgressions,

He was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him,

and by His stripes we are healed.

We all like sheep have gone astray,

each one has turned to his own way;

and the LORD has laid upon Him

the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed and afflicted,

yet He did not open His mouth.

He was led like a lamb to the slaughter,

and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,

so He did not open His mouth.

For dogs surround me;

a band of evil men encircles me;

they have pierced my hands and feet.

I can count all my bones;

they stare and gloat over me.

They divide my garments among them

and cast lots for my clothing.

All who see me mock me;

they sneer and shake their heads:

"He trusts in the LORD,

let the LORD deliver him;

let the LORD rescue him,

since He delights in him."

O amor que se entrega

Ninguém tem maior amor do que aquele que dá a vida pelos amigos. Deus prova seu amor em que Cristo morreu por nós quando ainda éramos pecadores.

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

For if, when we were enemies of God, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!

By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

And being found in appearance as a man,

He humbled Himself

and became obedient to death —

even death on a cross.

Morte e ressurreição

Jesus morreu e ressuscitou, e a morte não mais tem domínio sobre Ele. Pelo batismo, participamos de sua morte e ressurreição.

For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, He cannot die again; death no longer has dominion over Him. The death He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life He lives, He lives to God.

Or aren’t you aware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life.

Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment, so also Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him.

Men of Israel, listen to this message: Jesus of Nazareth was a man certified by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs, which God did among you through Him, as you yourselves know. He was delivered up by God’s set plan and foreknowledge, and you, by the hands of the lawless, put Him to death by nailing Him to the cross. But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep Him in its grip.

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
