28 *Jesus knew that he had now finished his work. And in order to make the Scriptures come true, he said, "I am thirsty!" 29 A jar of cheap wine was there. Someone then soaked a sponge with the wine and held it up to Jesus' mouth on the stem of a hyssop plant. 30 After Jesus drank the wine, he said, "Everything is done!" He bowed his head and died.

23 After the soldiers had nailed Jesus to the cross, they divided up his clothes into four parts, one for each of them. But his outer garment was made from a single piece of cloth, and it did not have any seams. 24 *The soldiers said to each other, "Let’s not rip it apart. We will gamble to see who gets it." This happened so the Scriptures would come true, which say,

"They divided up my clothes

and gambled

for my garments."

The soldiers then did what they had decided.

25 Jesus' mother stood beside his cross with her sister and Mary the wife of Clopas. Mary Magdalene was standing there too.*26 When Jesus saw his mother and his favorite disciple with her, he said to his mother, "This man is now your son." 27 Then he said to the disciple, "She is now your mother." From then on, that disciple took her into his own home.

33 When the soldiers came to the place called "The Skull,"* they nailed Jesus to a cross. They also nailed the two criminals to crosses, one on each side of Jesus.

34,35 *Jesus said, "Father, forgive these people! They don’t know what they’re doing."*

While the crowd stood there watching Jesus, the soldiers gambled for his clothes. The leaders insulted him by saying, "He saved others. Now he should save himself, if he really is God’s chosen Messiah!"

36 *The soldiers made fun of Jesus and brought him some wine. 37 They said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!"

38 Above him was a sign that said, "This is the King of the Jews."

39 One of the criminals hanging there also insulted Jesus by saying, "Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and save us!"

40 But the other criminal told the first one off, "Don’t you fear God? Aren’t you getting the same punishment as this man? 41 We got what was coming to us, but he didn’t do anything wrong." 42 Then he said to Jesus, "Remember me when you come into power!"

43 Jesus replied, "I promise that today you will be with me in paradise."*

33 About noon the sky turned dark and stayed that way until around three o’clock. 34 *Then about that time Jesus shouted, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?"* which means, "My God, my God, why have you deserted me?"

51 *At once the curtain in the temple* was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, and rocks split apart. 52 Graves opened, and many of God’s people were raised to life. 53 They left their graves, and after Jesus had risen to life, they went into the holy city, where they were seen by many people.

54 The officer and the soldiers guarding Jesus felt the earthquake and saw everything else that happened. They were frightened and said, "This man really was God’s Son!"

5 **He was wounded and crushed

because of our sins;

by taking our punishment,

he made us completely well.

6 *All of us were like sheep

that had wandered off.

We had each gone our own way,

but the Lord gave him

the punishment we deserved.

7 ***He was painfully abused,

but he did not complain.

He was silent like a lamb

being led to the butcher,

as quiet as a sheep

having its wool cut off.

16 Brutal enemies attack me

like a pack of dogs,

tearing at* my hands

and my feet.

17 I can count all my bones,

and my enemies just stare

and sneer at me.

18 *They took my clothes

and gambled for them.

7 *Everyone who sees me

makes fun and sneers.

They shake their heads,

8 *and say, "Trust the Lord!

If you are his favorite,

let him protect you

and keep you safe."

13 The greatest way to show love for friends is to die for them.

16 God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die.

10 Even when we were God’s enemies, he made peace with us, because his Son died for us. Yet something even greater than friendship is ours. Now that we are at peace with God, we will be saved by the life of his Son.

16 We know what love is because Jesus gave his life for us. This is why we must give our lives for each other.

2 Christ is the sacrifice that takes away our sins and the sins of all the world’s people.

8 Christ was humble.

He obeyed God and even died

on a cross.

9 We know that death no longer has any power over Christ. He died and was raised to life, never again to die. 10 When Christ died, he died for sin once and for all. But now he is alive, and he lives only for God.

3 Don’t you know that all who share in Christ Jesus by being baptized also share in his death? 4 *When we were baptized, we died and were buried with Christ. We were baptized, so we would live a new life, as Christ was raised to life by the glory of God the Father.

27 We die only once, and then we are judged. 28 *So Christ died only once to take away the sins of many people. But when he comes again, it will not be to take away sin. He will come to save everyone who is waiting for him.

22 Now, listen to what I have to say about Jesus from Nazareth. God proved he sent Jesus to you by having him work miracles, wonders, and signs. All of you know this. 23 *God had already planned and decided that Jesus would be handed over to you. So you took him and had evil men put him to death on a cross. 24 *But God set him free from death and raised him to life. Death could not hold him in its power.

11 *I am the good shepherd, and the good shepherd gives up his life for his sheep.

26 The Lord meant that when you eat this bread and drink from this cup, you tell about his death until he comes.
