The Finished Work of Jesus

28 After  * this, when Jesus knew that everything was now finished  * that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, "I’m thirsty."*29 A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch  * and held it up to his mouth.

30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, "It is finished."* Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.  *

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another, "Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it." This happened that the Scripture  * might be fulfilled  * that says: They divided my clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing.*,* This is what the soldiers did.

Jesus’s Provision for His Mother

25 Standing  * by the cross  * of Jesus were his mother,  * his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.  *26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved  * standing there, he said to his mother, "Woman, here is your son."27 Then he said to the disciple, "Here is your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

33 When  * they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. 34 Then Jesus said, "Father,*forgive*them, because they do not know what they are doing."*,* And they divided his clothes and cast lots.  *

35 The  * people stood watching, and even the leaders were scoffing:  * "He saved others; let him save himself if this is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One! "  *36 The soldiers also mocked him. They came offering him sour wine  *37 and said, "If you are the king of the Jews,  * save yourself! "

38 An inscription was above him:  * This Is the King of the Jews.

39 Then  * one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at  * him: "Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us! "

40 But the other answered, rebuking him: "Don’t you even fear God,  * since you are undergoing the same punishment? 41 We are punished justly, because we’re getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong."  *42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me  *,* when you come into your kingdom."  *

43 And he said to him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise."*

The Death of Jesus

33 When  * it was noon,  * darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.  *,*34 And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni?" which is translated, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?"*,*

51 Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary  * was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were also opened  * and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 And they came out of the tombs after his resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.

54 When the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, "Truly this man was the Son of God! "  *

5 But he was pierced because of our rebellion,  *

crushed because of our iniquities;  *

punishment  * for our peace was on him,

and we are healed by his wounds.  *

6 We all went astray like sheep;  *

we all have turned to our own way;

and the Lord has punished him

for  * the iniquity  * of us all.  *

7 He was oppressed and afflicted,

yet he did not open his mouth.

Like a lamb led to the slaughter

and like a sheep silent before her shearers,

he did not open his mouth.  *

16 For dogs have surrounded me;  *

a gang of evildoers has closed in on me;

they pierced  * my hands and my feet.  *

17 I can count all my bones;

people  * look and stare at me.  *

18 They divided my garments among themselves,

and they cast lots for my clothing.  *

7 Everyone who sees me mocks me;

they sneer  * and shake their heads:  *

8 "He relies on  *  the  Lord;

let him save him;

let the Lord* rescue him,

since he takes pleasure in him."  *

13 No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life*for his friends.

16 For God loved*the world in this way:*He gave*his one and only*Son,*so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.*

10 For if, while we were enemies,  * we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life.  *

16 This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life  * for us.  * We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.  *

2 He himself is the atoning sacrifice  *,* for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.  *

8 he humbled himself by becoming obedient

to the point of death —

even to death on a cross.  *

9 because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead,  * will not die again. Death no longer rules over him.  *10 For the death he died, he died to sin once for all time; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

3 Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized  * into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?  *4 Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death,  * in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead  * by the glory of the Father,  * so we too may walk in newness  * of life.  *

27 And just as it is appointed for people to die once — and after this, judgment  *  —  28 so also Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many,  * will appear a second time,  * not to bear sin, but  * to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.  *

22 "Fellow Israelites, listen to these words: This Jesus of Nazareth was a man attested to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through him, just as you yourselves know.  *23 Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used  * lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him.  *24 God raised him up, ending the pains of death,  * because it was not possible for him to be held by death.

11 "I am the good shepherd.*The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.*

26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death  * until he comes.  *
