Orgulho

Por Bíblia Online

O orgulho é um dos pecados mais condenados na Bíblia. Deus resiste aos soberbos, mas dá graça aos humildes. A humildade é o caminho da honra verdadeira.

Deus resiste ao soberbo

A soberba precede a ruína e o orgulho antecede a queda. Deus abomina o coração altivo e promete humilhar quem se exalta.

First pride, then the crash—

the bigger the ego, the harder the fall.

God can’t stomach arrogance or pretense;

believe me, he’ll put those braggarts in their place.

There’s a way that looks harmless enough;

look again—it leads straight to hell.

"I am Lady Wisdom, and I live next to Sanity;

Knowledge and Discretion live just down the street.

The Fear-of-God means hating Evil,

whose ways I hate with a passion—

pride and arrogance and crooked talk.

Good counsel and common sense are my characteristics;

I am both Insight and the Virtue to live it out.

With my help, leaders rule,

and lawmakers legislate fairly;

With my help, governors govern,

along with all in legitimate authority.

I love those who love me;

those who look for me find me.

Wealth and Glory accompany me—

also substantial Honor and a Good Name.

My benefits are worth more than a big salary, even a very big salary;

the returns on me exceed any imaginable bonus.

You can find me on Righteous Road—that’s where I walk—

at the intersection of Justice Avenue,

Handing out life to those who love me,

filling their arms with life—armloads of life!

The stuck-up fall flat on their faces,

but down-to-earth people stand firm.

The stuck-up fall flat on their faces,

but down-to-earth people stand firm.

Pride lands you flat on your face;

humility prepares you for honors.

Pride lands you flat on your face;

humility prepares you for honors.

Pride first, then the crash,

but humility is precursor to honor.

Pride first, then the crash,

but humility is precursor to honor.

God smashes the pretensions of the arrogant;

he stands with those who have no standing.

Humildade como caminho

Humilhai-vos diante do Senhor e Ele vos exaltará. A grandeza no Reino vem pelo serviço humilde, não pela autopromoção.

You’re cheating on God. If all you want is your own way, flirting with the world every chance you get, you end up enemies of God and his way. And do you suppose God doesn’t care? The proverb has it that "he’s a fiercely jealous lover." And what he gives in love is far better than anything else you’ll find. It’s common knowledge that "God goes against the willful proud; God gives grace to the willing humble."

So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him make himself scarce. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.

When down-and-outers get a break, cheer! And when the arrogant rich are brought down to size, cheer! Prosperity is as short-lived as a wildflower, so don’t ever count on it. You know that as soon as the sun rises, pouring down its scorching heat, the flower withers. Its petals wilt and, before you know it, that beautiful face is a barren stem. Well, that’s a picture of the "prosperous life." At the very moment everyone is looking on in admiration, it fades away to nothing.

When God, who is the best shepherd of all, comes out in the open with his rule, he’ll see that you’ve done it right and commend you lavishly. And you who are younger must follow your leaders. But all of you, leaders and followers alike, are to be down to earth with each other, for—

God has had it with the proud,

But takes delight in just plain people.

So be content with who you are, and don’t put on airs. God’s strong hand is on you; he’ll promote you at the right time. Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you.

"When you’re invited to dinner, go and sit at the last place. Then when the host comes he may very well say, ‘Friend, come up to the front.’ That will give the dinner guests something to talk about! What I’m saying is, If you walk around all high and mighty, you’re going to end up flat on your face. But if you’re content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself."

If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care—then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.

Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn’t claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion.

Os perigos do orgulho

O orgulho cega, gera contendas e afasta de Deus. A Escritura adverte contra a soberba da vida e a vã glória mundana.

Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world—wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important—has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from him. The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out—but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.

These are all warning markers—danger!—in our history books, written down so that we don’t repeat their mistakes. Our positions in the story are parallel—they at the beginning, we at the end—and we are just as capable of messing it up as they were. Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence.

If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.

Love never gives up.

Love cares more for others than for self.

Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.

Love doesn’t strut,

Doesn’t have a swelled head,

Doesn’t force itself on others,

Isn’t always "me first,"

Doesn’t fly off the handle,

Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,

Doesn’t revel when others grovel,

Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,

Puts up with anything,

Trusts God always,

Always looks for the best,

Never looks back,

But keeps going to the end.

Take a good look, friends, at who you were when you got called into this life. I don’t see many of "the brightest and the best" among you, not many influential, not many from high-society families. Isn’t it obvious that God deliberately chose men and women that the culture overlooks and exploits and abuses, chose these "nobodies" to expose the hollow pretensions of the "somebodies"? That makes it quite clear that none of you can get by with blowing your own horn before God. Everything that we have—right thinking and right living, a clean slate and a fresh start—comes from God by way of Jesus Christ. That’s why we have the saying, "If you’re going to blow a horn, blow a trumpet for God."

We’re not barging in on the rightful work of others, interfering with their ministries, demanding a place in the sun with them. What we’re hoping for is that as your lives grow in faith, you’ll play a part within our expanding work. And we’ll all still be within the limits God sets as we proclaim the Message in countries beyond Corinth. But we have no intention of moving in on what others have done and taking credit for it. "If you want to claim credit, claim it for God." What you say about yourself means nothing in God’s work. It’s what God says about you that makes the difference.

He went on: "It’s what comes out of a person that pollutes: obscenities, lusts, thefts, murders, adulteries, greed, depravity, deceptive dealings, carousing, mean looks, slander, arrogance, foolishness—all these are vomit from the heart. There is the source of your pollution."

* * *

Arrogant know-it-alls stir up discord,

but wise men and women listen to each other’s counsel.

The payoff for meekness and Fear-of-God

is plenty and honor and a satisfying life.

Tell those rich in this world’s wealth to quit being so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage—to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they’ll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life.

O olhar de Deus

O Senhor não olha como o homem. Ele vê o coração e se agrada dos quebrantados de espírito e dos que tremem diante da sua Palavra.

But God told Samuel, "Looks aren’t everything. Don’t be impressed with his looks and stature. I’ve already eliminated him. God judges persons differently than humans do. Men and women look at the face; God looks into the heart."

Nothing and no one is holy like God,

no rock mountain like our God.

Don’t dare talk pretentiously—

not a word of boasting, ever!

For God knows what’s going on.

He takes the measure of everything that happens.

The weapons of the strong are smashed to pieces,

while the weak are infused with fresh strength.

The well-fed are out begging in the streets for crusts,

while the hungry are getting second helpings.

The barren woman has a houseful of children,

while the mother of many is bereft.

God’s Message:

"Heaven’s my throne,

earth is my footstool.

What sort of house could you build for me?

What holiday spot reserve for me?

I made all this! I own all this!"

God’s Decree.

"But there is something I’m looking for:

a person simple and plain,

reverently responsive to what I say.

"At the same time that I was given back my mind, I was also given back my majesty and splendor, making my kingdom shine. All the leaders and important people came looking for me. I was reestablished as king in my kingdom and became greater than ever. And that’s why I’m singing—I, Nebuchadnezzar—singing and praising the King of Heaven:

"Everything he does is right,

and he does it the right way.

He knows how to turn a proud person

into a humble man or woman."

The king of Israel countered, "Think about it—it’s easier to start a fight than end one."

Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath. Laugh with your happy friends when they’re happy; share tears when they’re down. Get along with each other; don’t be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don’t be the great somebody.

But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.

Legalism is helpless in bringing this about; it only gets in the way. Among those who belong to Christ, everything connected with getting our own way and mindlessly responding to what everyone else calls necessities is killed off for good—crucified.
