12 Honor your father and your mother  * so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

1 Children, obey  * your parents in the Lord, because this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, 3 so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.*,*,*

20 Children,  * obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

22 Listen to your father who gave you life,

and don’t despise your mother when  *  she is old.  *

26 The one who plunders his father and evicts his mother

is a disgraceful and shameful son.

20 Whoever curses his father or mother  *  —

his lamp will go out in deep darkness.  *

4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them learn to practice godliness toward their own family first and to repay their parents, for this pleases God.

6 Start a youth out on his way;  *

even when he grows old he will not depart from it.

6 These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart.  *7 Repeat them to your children.  * Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction,

and don’t reject your mother’s teaching,  *

9 for they will be a garland  * of favor on your head

and pendants  * around your neck.  *

4 Fathers, don’t stir up anger  * in your children, but bring them up in the training  * and instruction of the Lord.

21 Fathers,  * do not exasperate  * your children, so that they won’t become discouraged.

15 A rod of correction imparts wisdom,  *

but a youth left to himself  *

is a disgrace to his mother.  *

24 The one who will not use the rod hates his son,  *

but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently.  *

7 Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline?

3 Sons are indeed a heritage from the  Lord,

offspring, a reward.  *

4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior

are the sons born in one’s youth.  *

5 Happy is the man who has filled his quiver with them.  *

They will never be put to shame

when they speak with their enemies at the city gate.  *

6 Grandchildren are the crown of the elderly,

and the pride of children is their fathers.

24 The father of a righteous son will rejoice greatly,

and one who fathers a wise son will delight in him.  *

1 Solomon’s proverbs:  *

A wise son brings joy to his father,

but a foolish son, heartache to his mother.  *

11 What father among you, if his son*asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish?12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?13 If you then, who are evil,*know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father*give the Holy Spirit*to those who ask him? "

8 But if anyone does not provide  * for his own family, especially for his own household, he has denied the faith  * and is worse than an unbeliever.

15 But if it doesn’t please you to worship the Lord, choose for yourselves today: Which will you worship — the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living?  * As for me and my family, we will worship the Lord."

24 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh.  *

16 "Fathers are not to be put to death for their children, and children are not to be put to death for their fathers; each person will be put to death for his own sin.  *
