12 *"Respect your father and your mother, so that you may live a long time in the land that I am giving you.

Children and Parents

1 *Children, it is your Christian duty to* obey your parents, for this is the right thing to do. 2 *"Respect your father and mother" is the first commandment that has a promise added: 3 "so that all may go well with you, and you may live a long time in the land."

20 *Children, it is your Christian duty to obey your parents always, for that is what pleases God.

22 Listen to your father; without him you would not exist. When your mother is old, show her your appreciation.

26 Only a shameful, disgraceful person would mistreat his father or turn his mother away from his home.

20 If you curse your parents, your life will end like a lamp that goes out in the dark.

4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, they should learn first to carry out their religious duties toward their own family and in this way repay their parents and grandparents, because that is what pleases God.

6 *Teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their life.

6 *Never forget these commands that I am giving you today. 7 Teach them to your children. Repeat them when you are at home and when you are away, when you are resting and when you are working.

8 My child, pay attention to what your father and mother tell you. 9 Their teaching will improve your character as a handsome turban or a necklace improves your appearance.

4 *Parents, do not treat your children in such a way as to make them angry. Instead, raise them with Christian discipline and instruction.

21 *Parents, do not irritate your children, or they will become discouraged.

15 Correction and discipline are good for children. If they have their own way, they will make their mothers ashamed of them.

24 If you don’t punish your children, you don’t love them. If you do love them, you will correct them.

7 Endure what you suffer as being a father’s punishment; your suffering shows that God is treating you as his children. Was there ever a child who was not punished by his father?

3 Children are a gift from the Lord;

they are a real blessing.

4 The sons a man has when he is young

are like arrows in a soldier’s hand.

5 Happy is the man who has many such arrows.

He will never be defeated

when he meets his enemies in the place of judgment.

6 Grandparents are proud of their grandchildren, just as children are proud of their parents.

24 A righteous person’s parents have good reason to be happy. You can take pride in a wise child.

Solomon’s Proverbs

1 These are Solomon’s proverbs:

Wise children make their fathers proud of them; foolish ones bring their mothers grief.

11 Would any of you who are fathers give your son a snake when he asks for fish? 12 Or would you give him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? 13 As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

8 But if any do not take care of their relatives, especially the members of their own family, they have denied the faith and are worse than an unbeliever.

15 If you are not willing to serve him, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your ancestors worshiped in Mesopotamia or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are now living. As for my family and me, we will serve the Lord."

24 *That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one.

16 *"Parents are not to be put to death for crimes committed by their children, and children are not to be put to death for crimes committed by their parents; people are to be put to death only for a crime they themselves have committed.
