12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days can be long on the land that Yahweh your God is giving you.

Children and Parents

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother" (which is the first* commandment with a promise), 3 "in order that it may be well with you, and you may live a long time* on the earth."*

20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing in the Lord.

22 Listen to your father—he who gave you life,*

and do not despise your mother when* she is old.

26 He who does violence to a father, he who chases away a mother,

is a child who causes shame and brings reproach.

20 He who curses his father and his mother,

his lamp will be extinguished in the midst of darkness.*

4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must learn to show profound respect for their own household first, and to pay back recompense to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.

6 Train the child concerning his way;*

even when he is old, he will not stray from it.

6 And these words that I am commanding you today* shall be on* your heart.*7 And you shall recite them to your children, and you shall talk about them at the time of your living in your house and at the time of your going on the road and at the time of your lying down and at the time of your rising up.

8 My child, may you keep* your father’s instruction,

and do not reject your mother’s teachings,

9 for they are a garland of favor for your head,

and pendants for your neck.

4 And fathers, do not make your children angry, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, so that they will not become discouraged.

15 As for a rod and reproof, they* will give wisdom,

but a neglected child is disgraced by his mother.

24 He who withholds his rod hates his child,

but he who loves him gives him* discipline.

7 Endure it for discipline. God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there whom a father does not discipline?

3 Look, children* are the heritage* of Yahweh;

the fruit of the womb is a reward.

4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,

so are the children* of one’s youth.

5 Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them.*

They shall not be put to shame

when they speak with enemies at the gate.

6 The crown of the elderly are grandchildren,*

and the glory of children is their fathers.

24 The father of the righteous will surely rejoice;

he who bears a wise person will be happy with him.

Proverbs of Solomon

1 The proverbs of Solomon:

A wise child makes a father glad,

but a foolish child grieves his mother.

11 But what father from among you, if his* son will ask for a fish, instead of a fish will give him a snake? 12 Or also, if he will ask for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 Therefore if you, although you* are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father from heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"

8 But if someone does not provide for his own relatives, and especially the members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

15 But if it is bad in your eyes to serve Yahweh, choose for yourselves today whom you want to serve, whether it is the gods that your ancestors* served beyond the river,* or the gods of the Amorites* in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve Yahweh."

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cling to his wife, and they shall be as one flesh.

16 "Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, and children shall not be put to death because of their fathers; each one shall be put to death for his own sin.
