12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be prolonged on the land which the Lord your God gives you.

Children and Parents

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), 3 so that it may turn out well for you, and that you may live long on the earth.

20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing *to the Lord.

22 Listen to your father, who fathered you,

And do not despise your mother when she is old.

26 He who assaults his father and drives his mother away

Is a shameful and disgraceful son.

20 He who curses his father or his mother,

His lamp will go out in time of darkness.

4 but if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to show proper respect for their own family and to give back compensation to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God.

6 Train up a child *in the way he should go,

Even when he grows older he will not abandon it.

6 These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 And you shall repeat them diligently to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.

The Enticement of Sinners

8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction,

And do not ignore your mother’s teaching;

9 For they are a graceful wreath for your head

And necklaces for your neck.

4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

21 Fathers, do not *antagonize your children, so that they will not become discouraged.

15 The rod and a rebuke give wisdom,

But a child *who gets his own way brings shame to his mother.

24 He who withholds his *rod hates his son,

But he who loves him *disciplines him diligently.

7 It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

3 Behold, children are a *gift of the Lord,

The fruit of the womb is a reward.

4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,

So are the children of one’s youth.

5 Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them;

They will not be ashamed

When they speak with their enemies in the gate.

6 Grandchildren are the crown of the old,

And the glory of sons is their fathers.

24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice,

And he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.

Contrast of the Righteous and the Wicked

1 The proverbs of Solomon.

A wise son makes a father glad,

But a foolish son is a grief to his mother.

11 Now *which one of you fathers will his son ask for a *fish, and instead of a fish, he will give him a snake?12 Or he will even ask for an egg, and his father will give him a scorpion?13 So if you, despite being *evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will *your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"

8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

15 But if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served, which were beyond the Euphrates River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

16 "Fathers shall not be put to death for their sons, nor shall sons be put to death for their fathers; everyone shall be put to death for his own sin alone.
