From then on Jesus began to show to His disciples that He had to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised on the third day.
Then Jesus says to them: "My soul is in anguish, to the point of death. Stay here and watch with me."
And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself, becoming obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross!
"Because of this the Father loves me, in that I lay down my life so that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father."
For even the Son of the Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
A farcical trial
Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus so as to kill Him, but were not finding any.
