A paixão de Cristo é o ato de amor supremo da história. Jesus sofreu voluntariamente a cruz, carregando os pecados da humanidade para nos dar vida eterna.
O caminho da cruz
Jesus sabia o que o aguardava. Mesmo em agonia, submeteu-se à vontade do Pai e caminhou resolutamente para o Calvário.
Jesus Speaks about His Suffering and Death
From that time on Jesus began to say plainly to his disciples, "I must go to Jerusalem and suffer much from the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law. I will be put to death, but three days later I will be raised to life."
and he said to them, "The sorrow in my heart is so great that it almost crushes me. Stay here and keep watch with me."
He was humble and walked the path of obedience all the way to death—
his death on the cross.
Since the children, as he calls them, are people of flesh and blood, Jesus himself became like them and shared their human nature. He did this so that through his death he might destroy the Devil, who has the power over death, and in this way set free those who were slaves all their lives because of their fear of death.
O sacrifício voluntário
Ninguém tirou a vida de Jesus — Ele a deu voluntariamente. Ele veio para servir e dar a sua vida em resgate por muitos.
"The Father loves me because I am willing to give up my life, in order that I may receive it back again. No one takes my life away from me. I give it up of my own free will. I have the right to give it up, and I have the right to take it back. This is what my Father has commanded me to do."
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served; he came to serve and to give his life to redeem many people."
The chief priests and the whole Council tried to find some evidence against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they could not find any.
But God has shown us how much he loves us—it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us!
It was to this that God called you, for Christ himself suffered for you and left you an example, so that you would follow in his steps. He committed no sin, and no one ever heard a lie come from his lips. When he was insulted, he did not answer back with an insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but placed his hopes in God, the righteous Judge. Christ himself carried our sins in his body to the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness. It is by his wounds that you have been healed.
We despised him and rejected him;
he endured suffering and pain.
No one would even look at him—
we ignored him as if he were nothing.
"But he endured the suffering that should have been ours,
the pain that we should have borne.
All the while we thought that his suffering
was punishment sent by God.
But because of our sins he was wounded,
beaten because of the evil we did.
We are healed by the punishment he suffered,
made whole by the blows he received.
