1. Parábola do Semeador (Mateus 13:3-9)

He told them many things in parables, saying, "Listen carefully: a sower went out to sow [seed in his field]; and as he sowed, some seed fell beside the road [between the fields], and the birds came and ate it.Other seed fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil; and at once they sprang up because they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.Other seed fell among thorns, and thorns came up and choked them out.Other seed fell on good soil and yielded grain, some a hundred times as much [as was sown], some sixty [times as much], and some thirty. He who has ears [to hear], let him hear and heed My words."

2. O Bom Samaritano (Lucas 10:25-37)

And a certain lawyer [an expert in Mosaic Law] stood up to test Him, saying, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" [Matt 22:34-40; Mark 12:28-31] Jesus said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?"And he replied, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." [Lev 19:18; Deut 6:5] Jesus said to him, "You have answered correctly; do thishabituallyand you will live." [Lev 18:5; Ezek 20:11; Matt 19:17] But he, wishing to justify and vindicate himself, asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

Parable of the Good Samaritan

Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he encountered robbers, who stripped him of his clothes [and belongings], beat him, and went their way [unconcerned], leaving him half dead. Now by coincidence a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.Likewise a Levite also came down to the place and saw him, and passed by on the other side [of the road]. But a Samaritan (foreigner), who was traveling, came upon him; and when he saw him, he was deeply moved with compassion [for him], and went to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them [to sooth and disinfect the injuries]; and he put him on his own pack-animal, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.On the next day he took out two denarii (two dayswages) and gave them to the innkeeper, and said, Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.Which of these three do you think proved himself a neighbor to the man who encountered the robbers?"He answered, "The one who showed compassion and mercy to him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and constantly do the same."

3. A Ovelha Perdida (Lucas 15:4-7)

"What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one which is lost, [searching] until he finds it? [Matt 18:12-14] And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he gets home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, because I have found my lost sheep!I tell you, in the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.

4. O Filho Pródigo (Lucas 15:11-32)

The Prodigal Son

Then He said, "A certain man had two sons. The younger of them [inappropriately] said to his father, Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.So he divided the estate between them. [Deut 21:15-17] A few days later, the younger son gathered together everything [that he had] and traveled to a distant country, and there he wasted his fortune in reckless and immoral living. Now when he had spent everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began to do without and be in need.So he went and forced himself on one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.He would have gladly eaten the [carob] pods that the pigs were eating [but they could not satisfy his hunger], and no one was giving anything to him. [Jer 30:14] But when he [finally] came to his senses, he said, How many of my father’s hired men have more than enough food, while I am dying here of hunger!I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight.I am no longer worthy to be called your son; [just] treat me like one of your hired men." So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.But the father said to his servants, Quickly bring out the best robe [for the guest of honor] and put it on him; and give him a ring for his hand, and sandals for his feet. [Gen 41:42; Zech 3:4] And bring the fattened calf and slaughter it, and let us [invite everyone and] feast and celebrate;for this son of mine was [as good as] dead and is alive again; he was lost and has been found. So they began to celebrate.

"Now his older son was in the field; and when he returned and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. So he summoned one of the servants and began asking what this [celebration] meant. And he said to him, Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound. But the elder brother became angry and deeply resentful and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began pleading with him.But he said to his father, Look! These many years I have served you, and I have never neglected or disobeyed your command. Yet you have never given me [so much as] a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends;but when this [other] son of yours arrived, who has devoured your estate with immoral women, you slaughtered that fattened calf for him!The father said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But it was fitting to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was [as good as] dead and has begun to live. He was lost and has been found.’ "

5. A Pérola de Grande Valor (Mateus 13:45-46)

A Costly Pearl

"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, and upon finding a single pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

6. O Fariseu e o Publicano (Lucas 18:9-14)

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves and were confident that they were righteous [posing outwardly as upright and in right standing with God], and who viewed others with contempt: "Two men went up into the temple [enclosure] to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood [ostentatiously] and began praying to himself [in a self-righteous way, saying]: God, I thank You that I am not like the rest of menswindlers, unjust (dishonest), adulterersor even like this tax collector.I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.But the tax collector, standing at a distance, would not even raise his eyes toward heaven, but was striking his chest [in humility and repentance], saying, God, be merciful and gracious to me, the [especially wicked] sinner [that I am]!I tell you, this man went to his home justified [forgiven of the guilt of sin and placed in right standing with God] rather than the other man; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself [forsaking self-righteous pride] will be exalted."

7. Os Talentos (Mateus 25:14-30)

Parable of the Talents

"For it is just like a man who was about to take a journey, and he called his servants together and entrusted them with his possessions. [Luke 19:12-27] To one he gave five talents, to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and then he went on his journey. The one who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he [made a profit and] gained five more.Likewise the one who had two [made a profit and] gained two more. But the one who had received the one went and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

"Now after a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. And the one who had received the five talents came and brought him five more, saying, Master, you entrusted to me five talents. See, I have [made a profit and] gained five more talents. His master said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful and trustworthy over a little, I will put you in charge of many things; share in the joy of your master.

"Also the one who had the two talents came forward, saying, Master, you entrusted two talents to me. See, I have [made a profit and] gained two more talents. His master said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful and trustworthy over a little, I will put you in charge of many things; share in the joy of your master.

"The one who had received one talent also came forward, saying, Master, I knew you to be a harsh and demanding man, reaping [the harvest] where you did not sow and gathering where you did not scatter seed.So I was afraid [to lose the talent], and I went and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is your own.

"But his master answered him, You wicked, lazy servant, you knew that I reap [the harvest] where I did not sow and gather where I did not scatter seed. Then you ought to have put my money with the bankers, and at my return I would have received my money back with interest. So take the talent away from him, and give it to the one who has the ten talents.

"For to everyone who has [and values his blessings and gifts from God, and has used them wisely], more will be given, and [he will be richly supplied so that] he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have [because he has ignored or disregarded his blessings and gifts from God], even what he does have will be taken away. [Matt 13:12; Luke 19:26] And throw out the worthless servant into the outer darkness; in that place [of grief and torment] there will be weeping [over sorrow and pain] and grinding of teeth [over distress and anger].

8. O Rico e Lázaro (Lucas 16:19-31)

The Rich Man and Lazarus

"Now there was a certain rich man who was habitually dressed in expensive purple and fine linen, and celebrated and lived joyously in splendor every day.And a poor man named Lazarus, was laid at his gate, covered with sores. He [eagerly] longed to eat the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. Now it happened that the poor man died and his spirit was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom (paradise); and the rich man also died and was buried. In Hades (the realm of the dead), being in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom (paradise). And he cried out, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in severe agony in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things [all the comforts and delights], and Lazarus likewise bad things [all the discomforts and distresses]; but now he is comforted here [in paradise], while you are in severe agony. And besides all this, between us and you [people] a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to come over from here to you will not be able, and none may cross over from there to us.So the rich man said, Then, father [Abraham], I beg you to send Lazarus to my father’s housefor I have five brothersin order that he may solemnly warn them and witness to them, so that they too will not come to this place of torment. But Abraham said, They have [the Scriptures given by] Moses and the [writings of the] Prophets; let them listen to them.He replied, No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent [they will change their old way of thinking and seek God and His righteousness].And he said to him, If they do not listen to [the messages of] Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’ "

9. O Joio e o Trigo (Mateus 13:24-30)

Weeds among Wheat

Jesus gave them another parable [to consider], saying, "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds [resembling wheat] among the wheat, and went away.So when the plants sprouted and formed grain, the weeds appeared also. The servants of the owner came to him and said, Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? Then how does it have weeds in it?He replied to them, An enemy has done this. The servants asked him, Then do you want us to go and pull them out?But he said, No; because as you pull out the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them.Let them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, "First gather the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; but gather the wheat into my barn." ’ "

10. As Dez Virgens (Mateus 25:1-13)

Parable of Ten Virgins

"Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins, who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.Five of them were foolish [thoughtless, silly, and careless], and five were wise [far-sighted, practical, and sensible]. For when the foolish took their lamps, they did not take any [extra] oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil along with their lamps. Now while the bridegroom was delayed, they all began to nod off, and they fell asleep. But at midnight there was a shout, Look! The bridegroom [is coming]! Go out to meet him. Then all those virgins got up and put their own lamps in order [trimmed the wicks and added oil and lit them]. But the foolish virgins said to the wise, Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.But the wise replied, No, otherwise there will not be enough for us and for you, too; go instead to the dealers and buy oil for yourselves. But while they were going away to buy oil, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut and locked. Later the others also came, and said, Lord, Lord, open [the door] for us.But He replied, I assure you and most solemnly say to you, I do not know you [we have no relationship].Therefore, be on the alert [be prepared and ready], for you do not know the day nor the hour [when the Son of Man will come].
