11 They said, "Why are you men from Galilee standing here and looking up into the sky? Jesus has been taken to heaven. But he will come back in the same way you have seen him go."

Jesus Is the Way to the Father

1 Jesus said to his disciples, "Don’t be worried! Have faith in God and have faith in me.*2 There are many rooms in my Father’s house. I wouldn’t tell you this, unless it was true. I am going there to prepare a place for each of you. 3 After I have done this, I will come back and take you with me. Then we will be together.

I am coming soon! And when I come, I will reward everyone for what they have done.

Warning about Trouble

3 *Later, as Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, his disciples came to him in private and asked, "When will this happen? What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the world?"

4 Jesus answered:

Don’t let anyone fool you. 5 Many will come and claim to be me. They will say they are the Messiah, and they will fool many people.

6 You will soon hear about wars and threats of wars, but don’t be afraid. These things will have to happen first, but that isn’t the end.

9 *You will be arrested, punished, and even killed. Because of me, you will be hated by people of all nations. 10 Many will give up and will betray and hate each other. 11 Many false prophets will come and fool a lot of people.

12 Evil will spread and cause many people to stop loving others. 13 *But if you keep on being faithful right to the end, you will be saved.

14 When the good news about the kingdom has been preached all over the world and told to all nations, the end will come.

21 *This will be the worst time of suffering since the beginning of the world, and nothing this terrible will ever happen again. 22 If God doesn’t make the time shorter, no one will be left alive. But because of God’s chosen ones, he will make the time shorter.

23 Someone may say, "Here is the Messiah!" or "There he is!" But don’t believe it. 24 False messiahs and false prophets will come and work great miracles and signs. They will even try to fool God’s chosen ones. 25 But I have warned you ahead of time.

A Tree and Its Fruit

15 Watch out for false prophets! They dress up like sheep, but inside they are wolves who have come to attack you.

8 Nations and kingdoms will go to war against each other. There will be earthquakes in many places, and people will starve to death. But this is just the beginning of troubles.

9 *Be on your guard! You will be taken to courts and beaten with whips in their synagogues. And because of me, you will have to stand before rulers and kings to tell about your faith. 10 But before the end comes, the good news must be preached to all nations.

12 Brothers and sisters will betray each other and have each other put to death. Parents will betray their own children, and children will turn against their parents and have them killed. 13 *Everyone will hate you because of me. But if you keep on being faithful right to the end, you will be saved.

11 There will be great earthquakes, and in many places people will starve to death and suffer terrible diseases. All sorts of frightening things will be seen in the sky.

When the Son of Man Appears

29 *Right after those days of suffering,

"The sun will become dark,

and the moon

will no longer shine.

The stars will fall,

and the powers in the sky*

will be shaken."

30 *Then a sign will appear in the sky. And there will be the Son of Man.* All nations on earth will weep when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 At the sound of a loud trumpet, he will send his angels to bring his chosen ones together from all over the earth.

A Lesson from a Fig Tree

32 Learn a lesson from a fig tree. When its branches sprout and start putting out leaves, you know summer is near. 33 So when you see all these things happening, you will know the time has almost come.*

27 *The Son of Man will soon come in the glory of his Father and with his angels to reward all people for what they have done.

When the Son of Man Appears

25 *Strange things will happen to the sun, moon, and stars. The nations on earth will be afraid of the roaring sea and tides, and they won’t know what to do. 26 People will be so frightened that they will faint because of what is happening to the world. Every power in the sky will be shaken.*27 *Then the Son of Man will be seen, coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When all of this starts happening, stand up straight and be brave. You will soon be set free.

16 *With a loud command and with the shout of the chief angel and a blast of God’s trumpet, the Lord will return from heaven. Then those who had faith in Christ before they died will be raised to life. 17 Next, all of us who are still alive will be taken up into the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the sky. From that time on we will all be with the Lord forever. 18 Encourage each other with these words.

A Warning

34 Don’t spend all of your time thinking about eating or drinking or worrying about life. If you do, the final day will suddenly catch you 35 like a trap. This day will surprise everyone on earth. 36 Watch out and keep praying that you can escape all that is going to happen and that the Son of Man will be pleased with you.

7 Everything will soon come to an end. So be serious and be sensible enough to pray.

23 I pray that God, who gives peace, will make you completely holy. And may your spirit, soul, and body be kept healthy and faultless until our Lord Jesus Christ returns.

7 You are not missing out on any blessings, as you wait for him to return. 8 And until the day Christ does return, he will keep you completely innocent.

God’s Kindness and the New Life

11 God has shown us undeserved grace by coming to save all people. 12 He taught us to give up our wicked ways and our worldly desires and to live decent and honest lives in this world. 13 We are filled with hope, as we wait for the glorious return of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.*14 *He gave himself to rescue us from everything evil and to make our hearts pure. He wanted us to be his own people and to be eager to do right.

6 God is the one who began this good work in you, and I am certain that he won’t stop before it is complete on the day that Christ Jesus returns.

30 Don’t make God’s Spirit sad. The Spirit makes you sure that someday you will be free from your sins.

28 *So Christ died only once to take away the sins of many people. But when he comes again, it will not be to take away sin. He will come to save everyone who is waiting for him.

24 We should keep on encouraging each other to be thoughtful and to do helpful things. 25 Some people have given up the habit of meeting for worship, but we must not do that. We should keep on encouraging each other, especially since you know that the day of the Lord’s coming is getting closer.

8 *The Lord God says, "I am Alpha and Omega,* the one who is and was and is coming. I am God All-Powerful!"

11 I am coming soon. So hold firmly to what you have, and no one will take away the crown you will be given as your reward.

8 *Dear friends, don’t forget that for the Lord one day is the same as 1,000 years, and 1,000 years is the same as one day.

Children of God

28 Children, stay one in your hearts with Christ. Then when he returns, we will have confidence and won’t have to hide in shame.
