1 But it came to pass that, when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews. 2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What are these feeble Jews doing? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, seeing they are burned? 3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they are building, if a fox go up, he shall break down their stone wall.

1 ORA, quando Samballat udì che noi edificavamo il muro, si adirò, e sdegnò grandemente, e si fece beffe de’ Giudei.

2 E disse in presenza de’ suoi fratelli, e della gente di guerra di Samaria: Che fanno cotesti spossati Giudei? Lasceransi fare? permetterassi che sacrifichino? permetterassi oggi che forniscano l’opera? faranno essi risorgere da’ mucchi della polvere le pietre che sono state arse?

3 E Tobia Ammonita, ch’era presso di lui, disse: Avvegnachè edifichino, non ci vuole che una volpe che salga, per rompere il lor muro di pietra.
