1 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of Jehovah unto Beth-el: and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense. 2 And he cried against the altar by the word of Jehovah, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith Jehovah: Behold, a son shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he sacrifice the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall they burn upon thee. 3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which Jehovah hath spoken: Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out. 4 And it came to pass, when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Beth-el, that Jeroboam put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back again to him. 5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of Jehovah. 6 And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Entreat now the favor of Jehovah thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God entreated Jehovah, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before. 7 And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. 8 And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thy house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place; 9 for so was it charged me by the word of Jehovah, saying, Thou shalt eat no bread, nor drink water, neither return by the way that thou camest. 10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Beth-el.

11 Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and one of his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them also they told unto their father. 12 And their father said unto them, What way went he? Now his sons had seen what way the man of God went, that came from Judah. 13 And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass; and he rode thereon. 14 And he went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak; and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am. 15 Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread. 16 And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee; neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place: 17 for it was said to me by the word of Jehovah, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest. 18 And he said unto him, I also am a prophet as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of Jehovah, saying, Bring him back with thee into thy house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him. 19 So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

20 And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of Jehovah came unto the prophet that brought him back; 21 and he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, Forasmuch as thou hast been disobedient unto the mouth of Jehovah, and hast not kept the commandment which Jehovah thy God commanded thee, 22 but camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy body shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers. 23 And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his body was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it; the lion also stood by the body. 25 And, behold, men passed by, and saw the body cast in the way, and the lion standing by the body; and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.

26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the mouth of Jehovah: therefore Jehovah hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake unto him. 27 And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled it. 28 And he went and found his body cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the body: the lion had not eaten the body, nor torn the ass. 29 And the prophet took up the body of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back; and he came to the city of the old prophet, to mourn, and to bury him. 30 And he laid his body in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother! 31 And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones. 32 For the saying which he cried by the word of Jehovah against the altar in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

33 After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again from among all the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, that there might be priests of the high places. 34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

Așa vorbește Domnul: ‘Iată că se va naște un fiu casei lui David; numele lui va fi Iosia*2 Împ. 23:15,16.; el va înjunghia pe tine pe preoții înălțimilor care ard tămâie pe tine, și pe tine se vor arde oseminte omenești!’" 3 Și în aceeași zi a dat un*Is. 7:14.Ioan 2:18.1 Cor. 1:22. semn zicând: „Acesta este semnul care arată că Domnul a vorbit: Altarul se va despica și cenușa de pe el se va vărsa." 4 Când a auzit împăratul cuvântul pe care-l strigase omul lui Dumnezeu împotriva altarului din Betel, a întins mâna de pe altar, zicând: „Prindeți-l!" Și mâna pe care o întinsese Ieroboam împotriva lui s-a uscat și n-a putut s-o întoarcă înapoi. 5 Altarul s-a despicat și cenușa de pe el s-a vărsat, după semnul pe care-l dăduse omul lui Dumnezeu, potrivit cu cuvântul Domnului. 6 Atunci, împăratul a luat cuvântul și a zis omului lui Dumnezeu: „Roagă-te*Exod 8:8;9:28;10:17.Num. 21:7.Fapte 8:24.Iac. 5:16. Domnului Dumnezeului tău și cere-I să-mi pot trage mâna înapoi." Omul lui Dumnezeu s-a rugat Domnului și împăratul a putut să-și tragă înapoi mâna, care s-a făcut sănătoasă ca mai înainte. 7 Împăratul a zis omului lui Dumnezeu: „Intră cu mine în casă, să iei ceva de mâncare, și-ți voi da*1 Sam. 9:7.2 Împ. 5:15. un dar." 8 Omul lui Dumnezeu a zis împăratului: „Jumătate*Num. 22:18;24:13. din casa ta să-mi dai, și n-aș intra cu tine. Nu voi mânca pâine și nu voi bea apă în locul acesta, 9 căci iată ce poruncă mi-a fost dată prin cuvântul Domnului: ‘Să*1 Cor. 5:11. nu mănânci pâine, nici să nu bei apă și nici să nu te întorci pe drumul pe care te vei duce.’" 10 El a plecat pe un alt drum și nu s-a întors pe drumul pe care venise la Betel.

11 În Betel locuia un proroc bătrân. Fiii săi au venit și i-au istorisit toate lucrurile pe care le făcuse omul lui Dumnezeu la Betel în ziua aceea, precum și cuvintele pe care le spusese împăratului. După ce au istorisit tatălui lor toate, 12 el le-a zis: „Pe ce drum a plecat?" Fiii săi văzuseră pe ce drum plecase omul lui Dumnezeu care venise din Iuda. 13 Și a zis fiilor săi: „Puneți-mi șaua pe măgar." I-au pus șaua pe măgar și a încălecat pe el. 14 S-a dus după omul lui Dumnezeu și l-a găsit stând sub un stejar. Și i-a zis: „Tu ești omul lui Dumnezeu care a venit din Iuda?" El a răspuns: „Eu sunt." 15 Atunci, el i-a zis: „Vino cu mine acasă și să iei ceva să mănânci." 16 Dar el a răspuns: „Nu pot*Vers. 8,9. nici să mă întorc cu tine, nici să intru la tine. Nu voi mânca pâine și nici nu voi bea apă cu tine în locul acesta, 17 căci mi s-a spus prin cuvântul*Cap. 20:35.1 Tes. 4:15. Domnului: ‘Să nu mănânci pâine, nici să nu bei apă acolo și nici să nu te întorci pe drumul pe care te vei duce.’" 18 Și el i-a zis: „Și eu sunt proroc ca tine; și un înger mi-a vorbit din partea Domnului și mi-a zis: ‘Adu-l acasă cu tine ca să mănânce pâine și să bea apă.’" Îl mințea. 19 Omul lui Dumnezeu s-a întors cu el și a mâncat pâine și a băut apă în casa lui. 20 Pe când stăteau ei la masă, cuvântul Domnului a vorbit prorocului care-l adusese înapoi. 21 Și el a strigat omului lui Dumnezeu care venise din Iuda: „Așa vorbește Domnul: ‘Pentru că n-ai ascultat porunca Domnului și n-ai păzit porunca pe care ți-o dăduse Domnul Dumnezeul tău, 22 pentru că te-ai întors și ai mâncat pâine și ai băut apă în locul despre care*Vers. 9. îți spusese: «Să nu mănânci pâine și să nu bei apă acolo», trupul tău mort nu va intra în mormântul părinților tăi.’" 23 Și, după ce a mâncat pâine și a băut apă prorocul pe care-l întorsese, i-a pus șaua pe măgar. 24 Omul lui Dumnezeu a plecat și a fost întâlnit pe drum de un leu*Cap. 20:36. care l-a omorât. Trupul lui mort era întins pe drum; măgarul a rămas lângă el și leul stătea și el lângă trup. 25 Și niște oameni care treceau pe acolo au văzut trupul întins în drum și leul stând lângă trup și au spus lucrul acesta la venirea lor în cetatea în care locuia prorocul cel bătrân. 26 Când a auzit lucrul acesta, prorocul care întorsese de pe drum pe omul lui Dumnezeu a zis: „Este omul lui Dumnezeu care n-a ascultat de porunca Domnului, și Domnul l-a dat în ghearele leului, care l-a sfâșiat și l-a omorât după cuvântul pe care i-l spusese Domnul." 27 Apoi, îndreptându-se către fiii săi, a zis: „Puneți-mi șaua pe măgar." Au pus șaua pe măgar 28 și el a plecat. A găsit trupul întins în drum și măgarul și leul stând lângă trup. Leul nu mâncase trupul și nu sfâșiase pe măgar. 29 Prorocul a ridicat trupul omului lui Dumnezeu, l-a pus pe măgar și l-a adus înapoi; și bătrânul proroc s-a întors în cetate să-l jelească și să-l îngroape. 30 I-a pus trupul în mormânt și l-a jelit zicând: „Vai*Ier. 22:18., frate!" 31 După ce l-a îngropat, a zis fiilor săi: „Când voi muri, să mă îngropați în mormântul în care este îngropat omul lui Dumnezeu; să-mi puneți oasele*2 Împ. 23:17,18. lângă oasele lui. 32 Căci se*Vers. 2.2 Împ. 23:16,19. va împlini cuvântul pe care l-a strigat el din partea Domnului împotriva altarului din Betel și împotriva tuturor capiștilor de înălțimi din cetățile*Cap. 16:24. Samariei."

33 După întâmplarea*Cap. 12:31,32.2 Cron. 11:15;13:9. aceasta, Ieroboam nu s-a abătut de pe calea lui cea rea. A pus iarăși preoți pentru înălțimi, luați din tot poporul – pe oricine dorea, îl sfințea preot al înălțimilor. 34 Și fapta aceasta a fost*Cap. 12:30. un prilej de păcătuire pentru casa lui Ieroboam și pentru aceasta a fost nimicită*Cap. 14:10. ea și ștearsă de pe fața pământului.
