1 And Jehovah said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go: I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons. 2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And Jehovah said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah. 3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee. 4 And Samuel did that which Jehovah spake, and came to Beth-lehem. And the elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, Comest thou peaceably? 5 And he said, Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice unto Jehovah: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Jehovah’s anointed is before him. 7 But Jehovah said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for Jehovah seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh on the heart. 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this. 9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this. 10 And Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Jehovah hath not chosen these. 11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he come hither. 12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look upon. And Jehovah said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he. 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

14 Now the Spirit of Jehovah departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Jehovah troubled him. 15 And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. 16 Let our lord now command thy servants, that are before thee, to seek out a man who is a skilful player on the harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. 17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me. 18 Then answered one of the young men, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is skilful in playing, and a mighty man of valor, and a man of war, and prudent in speech, and a comely person; and Jehovah is with him. 19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, who is with the sheep. 20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul. 21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armorbearer. 22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favor in my sight. 23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

1 Domnul a zis lui Samuel: „Când*Cap. 15:35. vei înceta să plângi pe Saul, pentru că l-am*Cap. 15:23. lepădat ca să nu mai domnească peste Israel? Umple-ți*Cap. 9:16.2 Împ. 9:1. cornul cu untdelemn și du-te; te voi trimite la Isai, Betleemitul, căci pe unul din fiii lui Mi l-am ales*Ps. 78:70;89:19,20.Fapte 13:22. ca împărat." 2 Samuel a zis: „Cum să mă duc? Saul are să afle și mă va ucide." Și Domnul a zis: „Să iei cu tine un vițel și să zici: ‘Vin să aduc o jertfă*Cap. 9:12;20:29. Domnului.’ 3 Să poftești pe Isai la jertfă; Eu îți voi arăta*Exod 4:15. ce trebuie să faci și Îmi vei unge*Cap. 9:16. pe acela pe care-ți voi spune să-l ungi." 4 Samuel a făcut ce zisese Domnul și s-a dus la Betleem. Bătrânii cetății au alergat înspăimântați*Cap. 21:1. înaintea lui și au zis: „Ce vestește venirea ta: ceva bun*1 Împ. 2:13.2 Împ. 9:22.?" 5 El a răspuns: „Da, vin să aduc o jertfă Domnului. Sfințiți-vă*Exod 19:10,14. și veniți cu mine la jertfă." A sfințit și pe Isai cu fiii lui și i-a poftit la jertfă. 6 Când au intrat ei, Samuel, văzând pe Eliab*Cap. 17:13., și-a zis*1 Împ. 12:26.: „Negreșit, unsul Domnului este aici, înaintea Lui." 7 Și Domnul a zis lui Samuel: „Nu te uita la înfățișarea*Ps. 147:10,11. și înălțimea staturii lui, căci l-am lepădat. Domnul*Is. 55:8. nu Se uită la ce se uită omul; omul se uită la ceea ce izbește ochii*2 Cor. 10:7., dar Domnul Se uită la inimă*1 Împ. 8:39.1 Cron. 28:9.Ps. 7:9.Ier. 11:20;17:10;20:12.Fapte 1:24.." 8 Isai a chemat pe Abinadab*Cap. 17:13. și l-a trecut pe dinaintea lui Samuel, și Samuel a zis: „Nici pe acesta nu l-a ales Domnul." 9 Isai a trecut pe Șama*Cap. 17:13., și Samuel a zis: „Nici pe acesta nu l-a ales Domnul." 10 Și așa a trecut Isai pe cei șapte fii ai lui pe dinaintea lui Samuel, și Samuel a zis lui Isai: „Domnul n-a ales pe niciunul din ei." 11 Apoi Samuel a zis lui Isai: „Aceștia sunt toți fiii tăi?" Și el a răspuns: „A mai rămas*Cap. 17:12. cel mai tânăr, dar paște oile." Atunci, Samuel a zis lui Isai: „Trimite*2 Sam. 7:8.Ps. 78:70. să-l aducă, fiindcă nu vom ședea la masă până nu va veni aici." 12 Isai a trimis să-l aducă. Și el era cu păr bălai*Cap. 17:42.Cânt. 5:10., cu ochi frumoși și față frumoasă. Domnul*Cap. 9:17. a zis lui Samuel: „Scoală-te și unge-l, căci el este!" 13 Samuel a luat cornul cu untdelemn și l-a uns*Cap. 10:1.Ps. 89:20. în mijlocul fraților lui. Duhul*Num. 27:18.Jud. 11:29;13:25;14:6. Cap. 10:6,10. Domnului a venit peste David începând din ziua aceea și în cele următoare.

Samuel s-a sculat și s-a dus la Rama.

14 Duhul*Cap. 11:6;18:12;28:15.Jud. 16:20.Ps. 51:11. Domnului S-a depărtat de la Saul; și a fost muncit de un*Jud. 9:23. Cap. 18:10;19:9. duh rău, care venea de la Domnul. 15 Slujitorii lui Saul i-au zis: „Iată că un duh rău de la Dumnezeu te muncește. 16 Poruncească numai domnul nostru! Robii tăi sunt înaintea*Gen. 41:46. Vers. 21,22.1 Împ. 10:8. ta. Ei vor căuta un om care să știe să cânte cu harpa și, când duhul rău trimis de Dumnezeu va fi peste tine, el va cânta cu mâna*Vers. 23.2 Împ. 3:15. și vei fi ușurat." 17 Saul a răspuns slujitorilor săi: „Găsiți-mi dar un om care să cânte bine și aduceți-l la mine." 18 Unul din slujitori a luat cuvântul și a zis: „Iată, am văzut pe un fiu al lui Isai, Betleemitul, care știe să cânte; el este și un om tare și voinic*Cap. 17:32,34-36., un războinic, vorbește bine, este frumos la chip și Domnul*Cap. 3:19;18:12,14. este cu el." 19 Saul a trimis niște oameni la Isai să-i spună: „Trimite-mi pe fiul tău David, care este cu*Vers. 11; Cap. 17:15,34. oile." 20 Isai a luat*Cap. 10:27;17:18.Gen. 43:11.Prov. 18:16. un măgar, l-a încărcat cu pâine, cu un burduf cu vin și cu un ied și a trimis lui Saul aceste lucruri, prin fiul său David. 21 David a ajuns la Saul și s-a*Gen. 41:46.1 Împ. 10:8.Prov. 22:29. înfățișat înaintea lui; i-a plăcut mult lui Saul și a fost pus să-i poarte armele. 22 Saul a trimis vorbă lui Isai, zicând: „Te rog să lași pe David în slujba mea, căci a căpătat trecere înaintea mea." 23 Și, când duhul*Vers. 14,16. trimis de Dumnezeu venea peste Saul, David lua harpa și cânta cu mâna lui; Saul răsufla atunci mai ușor, se simțea ușurat și duhul cel rău pleca de la el.
