1 Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech came to meet David trembling, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee? 2 And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know anything of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed the young men to such and such a place. 3 Now therefore what is under thy hand? give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatsoever there is present. 4 And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women. 5 And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days; when I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was but a common journey; how much more then to-day shall their vessels be holy? 6 So the priest gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before Jehovah, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

7 Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Jehovah; and his name was Doeg the Edomite, the chiefest of the herdsmen that belonged to Saul. 8 And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thy hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste. 9 And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the vale of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it; for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.

10 And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath. 11 And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying,

Saul hath slain his thousands,

And David his ten thousands?

12 And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath. 13 And he changed his behavior before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard. 14 Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad; wherefore then have ye brought him to me? 15 Do I lack madmen, that ye have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?

1 David s-a dus la Nob, la preotul Ahimelec*Cap. 14:3., care a alergat speriat*Cap. 16:4. înaintea lui și i-a zis: „Pentru ce ești singur și nu este nimeni cu tine?" 2 David a răspuns preotului Ahimelec: „Împăratul mi-a dat o poruncă și mi-a zis: ‘Nimeni să nu știe nimic de pricina pentru care te trimit și de porunca pe care ți-am dat-o.’ Am hotărât un loc de întâlnire cu oamenii mei. 3 Acum ce ai la îndemână? Dă-mi cinci pâini sau ce se va găsi." 4 Preotul a răspuns lui David: „N-am pâine obișnuită la îndemână, ci numai pâine sfințită*Exod 25:30.Lev. 24:5.Mat. 12:4.; doar dacă oamenii tăi s-au*Exod 19:15.Zah. 7:3. ferit de împreunarea cu femei!" 5 David a răspuns preotului: „Ne-am ferit de împreunarea cu femei de trei zile de când am plecat și toți oamenii*1 Tes. 4:4. mei sunt curați; de altfel, dacă aceasta este o faptă necurată, va fi sfințită negreșit azi de acela*Lev. 8:26. care o va face." 6 Atunci, preotul i-a dat*Mat. 12:3,4.Marcu 2:25,26.Luca 6:3,4. pâinea sfințită, căci nu era acolo altă pâine decât pâinea pentru punerea înainte, care fusese luată dinaintea*Lev. 24:8,9. Domnului ca să fie înlocuită cu pâine caldă în clipa când luaseră pe cealaltă. 7 Chiar în ziua aceea se afla acolo închis înaintea Domnului un om dintre slujitorii lui Saul; era un edomit, numit Doeg*Cap. 22:9. Ps. 52, titlu., căpetenia păstorilor lui Saul. 8 David a zis lui Ahimelec: „N-ai la îndemână o suliță sau o sabie? Căci nu mi-am luat cu mine nici sabia, nici armele, pentru că porunca împăratului era grabnică." 9 Preotul a răspuns: „Iată sabia lui Goliat, Filisteanul, pe care l-ai omorât în Valea*Cap. 17:2,50. Terebinților; este învelită*Cap. 31:10. într-un covor, în dosul efodului. Dacă vrei s-o iei, ia-o, căci nu este alta aici." Și David a zis: „Nu-i alta ca ea; dă-mi-o."

10 David s-a sculat și a fugit chiar în ziua aceea de Saul. A ajuns la Achiș, împăratul Gatului. 11 Slujitorii*Ps. 56, titlu. lui Achiș i-au zis: „Nu este acesta David, împăratul țării? Nu este el acela pentru care se cânta jucând: ‘Saul*Cap. 18:7;29:5. și-a bătut miile lui,

Iar David, zecile lui de mii’?" 12 David a pus la*Luca 2:19. inimă aceste cuvinte și a avut o mare frică de Achiș, împăratul Gatului. 13 A făcut pe nebunul*Ps. 34, titlu. înaintea lor; făcea năzdrăvănii înaintea lor, făcea zgârieturi pe ușile porților și lăsa să-i curgă balele pe barbă. 14 Achiș a zis slujitorilor săi: „Vedeți bine că omul acesta și-a pierdut mințile. Pentru ce mi-l aduceți? 15 Oare duc lipsă de nebuni, de-mi aduceți pe acesta și mă faceți martor la năzdrăvăniile lui? Să intre el în casa mea?"
