1 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. 2 Now the name of his first-born was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah: they were judges in Beer-sheba. 3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice.

4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah; 5 and they said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto Jehovah. 7 And Jehovah said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee; for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. 9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit thou shalt protest solemnly unto them, and shalt show them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

10 And Samuel told all the words of Jehovah unto the people that asked of him a king. 11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them unto him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots; 12 and he will appoint them unto him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and he will set some to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots. 13 And he will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. 14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants. 15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. 16 And he will take your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work. 17 He will take the tenth of your flocks: and ye shall be his servants. 18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye shall have chosen you; and Jehovah will not answer you in that day.

19 But the people refused to hearken unto the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay: but we will have a king over us, 20 that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles. 21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Jehovah. 22 And Jehovah said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

1 Când a îmbătrânit, Samuel a pus*Deut. 16:18.2 Cron. 19:5. pe fiii săi*Jud. 10:4;12:14;5:10. judecători peste Israel. 2 Fiul său întâi născut se numea Ioel și al doilea, Abia; ei erau judecători la Beer-Șeba. 3 Fiii lui Samuel n-au*Ier. 22:15-17. călcat pe urmele lui, ci se dădeau*Exod 18:21.1 Tim. 3:3;6:10. la lăcomie, luau mită*Deut. 16:19.Ps. 15:5. și călcau dreptatea. 4 Toți bătrânii lui Israel s-au strâns și au venit la Samuel, la Rama. 5 Ei au zis: „Iată că tu ești bătrân și copiii tăi nu calcă pe urmele tale; acum pune*Vers. 19,20.Deut. 17:14.Osea 13:10.Fapte 13:21. un împărat peste noi să ne judece, cum au toate neamurile." 6 Samuel n-a văzut cu plăcere faptul că ziceau: „Dă-ne un împărat ca să ne judece." Și Samuel s-a rugat Domnului. 7 Domnul a zis lui Samuel: „Ascultă glasul poporului în tot ce-ți va spune, căci nu pe*Exod 16:8. tine te leapădă, ci pe*Cap. 10:19;12:17,19.Osea 13:10,11. Mine mă leapădă, ca să nu mai domnesc peste ei. 8 Ei se poartă cu tine cum s-au purtat totdeauna, de când i-am scos din Egipt până în ziua de astăzi; M-au părăsit și au slujit altor dumnezei. 9 Ascultă-le glasul deci, dar înștiințează-i și fă-le*Vers. 11. cunoscut dreptul împăratului care va domni peste ei." 10 Samuel a spus toate cuvintele Domnului poporului care-i cerea un împărat. 11 El a zis: „Iată*Deut. 17:16. Cap. 10:25. care va fi dreptul împăratului care va domni peste voi. El*Cap. 14:52. va lua pe fiii voștri, îi va pune la carele sale și între călăreții lui, ca să alerge înaintea carului lui; 12 îi va pune căpetenii peste o mie și căpetenii peste cincizeci și-i va întrebuința la aratul pământurilor lui, la seceratul bucatelor lui, la facerea armelor lui de război și a uneltelor carelor lui. 13 Va lua pe fetele voastre să-i facă miresme, de mâncare și pâine. 14 Va lua cea mai bună parte din câmpiile*1 Împ. 21:7.Ezec. 46:18. voastre, din viile voastre și din măslinii voștri și o va da slujitorilor lui. 15 Va lua zeciuială din rodul semințelor și viilor voastre și o va da famenilor și slujitorilor lui. 16 Va lua pe robii și roabele voastre, cei mai buni boi și măgari ai voștri și-i va întrebuința la lucrările lui. 17 Va lua zeciuială din oile voastre și voi înșivă veți fi slugile lui. 18 Și atunci veți striga împotriva împăratului vostru pe care-l veți alege, dar Domnul*Prov. 1:25-28.Is. 1:15.Mica 3:4. nu vă va asculta." 19 Poporul n-a*Ier. 44:16. vrut să asculte glasul lui Samuel. „Nu, au zis ei, ci să fie un împărat peste noi, 20 ca să fim și noi ca*Vers. 5. toate neamurile; împăratul nostru ne va judeca, va merge în fruntea noastră și ne va cârmui în războaiele noastre." 21 Samuel, după ce a auzit toate cuvintele poporului, le-a spus în auzul Domnului. 22 Și Domnul a zis lui Samuel: „Ascultă-le*Vers. 7.Osea 13:11. glasul și pune un împărat peste ei." Și Samuel a zis bărbaților lui Israel: „Duceți-vă fiecare în cetatea lui."
