1 And Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth his hand, and made his defence:

2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, that I am to make my defence before thee this day touching all the things whereof I am accused by the Jews: 3 especially because thou art expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently. 4 My manner of life then from my youth up, which was from the beginning among mine own nation and at Jerusalem, know all the Jews; 5 having knowledge of me from the first, if they be willing to testify, that after the straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. 6 And now I stand here to be judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers; 7 unto which promise our twelve tribes, earnestly serving God night and day, hope to attain. And concerning this hope I am accused by the Jews, O king! 8 Why is it judged incredible with you, if God doth raise the dead? 9 I verily thought with myself that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 And this I also did in Jerusalem: and I both shut up many of the saints in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests, and when they were put to death I gave my vote against them. 11 And punishing them oftentimes in all the synagogues, I strove to make them blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto foreign cities. 12 Whereupon as I journeyed to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests, 13 at midday, O king, I saw on the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them that journeyed with me. 14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice saying unto me in the Hebrew language, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the goad. 15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. 16 But arise, and stand upon thy feet: for to this end have I appeared unto thee, to appoint thee a minister and a witness both of the things wherein thou hast seen me, and of the things wherein I will appear unto thee; 17 delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom I send thee, 18 to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith in me. 19 Wherefore, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: 20 but declared both to them of Damascus first, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judæa, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance. 21 For this cause the Jews seized me in the temple, and assayed to kill me. 22 Having therefore obtained the help that is from God, I stand unto this day testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses did say should come; 23 how that the Christ must suffer, and how that he first by the resurrection of the dead should proclaim light both to the people and to the Gentiles.

24 And as he thus made his defence, Festus saith with a loud voice, Paul, thou art mad; thy much learning is turning thee mad. 25 But Paul saith, I am not mad, most excellent Festus; but speak forth words of truth and soberness. 26 For the king knoweth of these things, unto whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things is hidden from him; for this hath not been done in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest. 28 And Agrippa said unto Paul, With but little persuasion thou wouldest fain make me a Christian. 29 And Paul said, I would to God, that whether with little or with much, not thou only, but also all that hear me this day, might become such as I am, except these bonds.

30 And the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them: 31 and when they had withdrawn, they spake one to another, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds. 32 And Agrippa said unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Cæsar.

Pavel a întins mâna și a început să se apere astfel: 2 „Mă socotesc fericit, împărate Agripa, că am să mă apăr astăzi înaintea ta pentru toate lucrurile de care sunt pârât de iudei, 3 căci tu cunoști foarte bine toate obiceiurile și neînțelegerile lor. De aceea, te rog să mă asculți cu îngăduință. 4 Viața mea, din cele dintâi zile ale tinereții mele, este cunoscută de toți iudeii, pentru că am petrecut-o în Ierusalim, în mijlocul neamului meu. 5 Dacă vor să mărturisească, ei știu de la început că am trăit ca fariseu, după cea mai îngustă partidă*Cap. 22:3;23:6;24:15,21.Filip. 3:5. a religiei noastre. 6 Și*Cap. 23:6. acum sunt dat în judecată pentru nădejdea făgăduinței*Gen. 3:15;22:18;26:4;49:10.Deut. 18:15.2 Sam. 7:12.Ps. 132:11.Is. 4:2;7:14;9:6;40:10.Ier. 23:5;33:14-16.Ezec. 34:23;37:24.Dan. 9:24.Mica 7:20. Pentru această nădejde*Filip. 3:11., împărate, sunt pârât eu de iudei! 8 Ce? Vi se pare de necrezut că Dumnezeu înviază morții? 9 Și*Ioan 16:2.1 Tim. 1:13. eu, ce-i drept, credeam că trebuie să fac multe lucruri împotriva Numelui lui Isus din Nazaret, 10 și așa*Cap. 8:3.Gal. 1:13. am și făcut în Ierusalim. Am aruncat în temniță pe mulți sfinți, căci am primit puterea aceasta de la*Cap. 9:14,21;22:5. preoții cei mai de seamă; și, când erau osândiți la moarte, îmi dădeam și eu votul împotriva lor. 11 I-am pedepsit adesea în toate sinagogile*Cap. 22:19. și îmi dădeam toată silința ca să-i fac să hulească. În pornirea mea nebună împotriva lor, îi prigoneam până și în cetățile străine. 12 În*Cap. 9:3;22:6. acest scop, m-am dus la Damasc, cu putere și învoire de la preoții cei mai de seamă. 13 Pe la amiază, împărate, pe drum, am văzut strălucind împrejurul meu și împrejurul tovarășilor mei o lumină din cer, a cărei strălucire întrecea pe a soarelui. 14 Am căzut cu toții la pământ, și eu am auzit un glas, care-mi zicea în limba evreiască: ‘Saule, Saule, pentru ce Mă prigonești? Îți este greu să arunci cu piciorul înapoi în vârful unui țepuș.’15 ‘Cine ești, Doamne?’, am răspuns eu. Și Domnul a zis: ‘Eu sunt Isus, pe care-L prigonești.16 Dar scoală-te și stai în picioare, căci M-am arătat ție ca*Cap. 22:15.să te pun slujitor și martor atât al lucrurilor pe care le-ai văzut, cât și al lucrurilor pe care Mă vei vedea făcându-le.17 Te-am ales din mijlocul norodului acestuia și din mijlocul neamurilor, la*Cap. 22:21.care te trimit,18 ca să*Is. 35:5;42:7.Luca 1:79.Ioan 8:12.2 Cor. 4:4.Efes. 1:18.1 Tes. 5:5.le deschizi ochii, să*2 Cor. 6:14.Efes. 4:18;5:8.Col. 1:13.1 Pet. 2:9,25.se întoarcă de la întuneric la lumină și de sub puterea Satanei la Dumnezeu și să*Luca 1:77.primească, prin credința în Mine, iertare de păcate și moștenirea*Efes. 1:11.Col. 1:12.împreună cu cei*Cap. 20:32.sfințiți.’19 De aceea, împărate Agripa, n-am vrut să mă împotrivesc vedeniei cerești. 20 Ci am*Cap. 9:20,22,29;11:26;13:14,16-21. propovăduit întâi celor din Damasc, apoi în Ierusalim, în toată Iudeea și la neamuri, să se pocăiască și să se întoarcă la Dumnezeu și să facă fapte*Mat. 3:8. vrednice de pocăința lor. 21 Iată de ce au pus iudeii*Cap. 21:30,31. mâna pe mine în Templu și au căutat să mă omoare. 22 Dar, mulțumită ajutorului lui Dumnezeu, am rămas în viață până în ziua aceasta și am mărturisit înaintea celor mici și celor mari, fără să mă depărtez cu nimic de la ce*Luca 24:27,44. Cap. 24:14; 28:23.Rom. 3:21. au spus prorocii și Moise*Ioan 5:46. că are să se întâmple, 23 și anume că*Luca 24:26,46. Hristosul trebuie să pătimească și că*1 Cor. 15:20.Col. 1:18.Apoc. 1:5., după ce va fi Cel dintâi din învierea morților, va*Luca 2:32. vesti lumină norodului și neamurilor." 24 Pe când vorbea el astfel, ca să se apere, Festus a zis cu glas tare: „Pavele, ești*2 Împ. 9:11.Ioan 10:20.1 Cor. 1:23;2:13,14;4:10. nebun! Învățătura ta cea multă te face să dai în nebunie." 25 „Nu sunt nebun, preaalesule Festus", a răspuns Pavel, „dimpotrivă, rostesc cuvinte adevărate și chibzuite. 26 Împăratul știe aceste lucruri și de aceea îi vorbesc cu îndrăzneală, căci sunt încredințat că nu-i este nimic necunoscut din ele, fiindcă nu s-au petrecut într-un colț! 27 Crezi tu în Proroci, împărate Agripa?… Știu că crezi." 28 Și Agripa a zis lui Pavel: „Curând mai vrei tu să mă îndupleci să mă fac creștin!" 29 „Fie curând*1 Cor. 7:7., fie târziu", a răspuns Pavel, „să dea Dumnezeu ca nu numai tu, ci toți cei ce mă ascultă astăzi să fiți așa cum sunt eu, afară de lanțurile acestea."

30 Împăratul, dregătorul, Berenice și toți cei ce ședeau împreună cu ei s-au sculat. 31 Și când au plecat, ziceau*Cap. 23:9,29;25:25. unii către alții: „Omul acesta n-a făcut nimic vrednic de moarte sau de închisoare." 32 Și Agripa a zis lui Festus: „Omului acestuia i s-ar fi putut da drumul, dacă*Cap. 25:11. n-ar fi cerut să fie judecat de Cezar."
