1 And when we were escaped, then we knew that the island was called Melita. 2 And the barbarians showed us no common kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us all, because of the present rain, and because of the cold. 3 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out by reason of the heat, and fastened on his hand. 4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous creature hanging from his hand, they said one to another, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped from the sea, yet Justice hath not suffered to live. 5 Howbeit he shook off the creature into the fire, and took no harm. 6 But they expected that he would have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but when they were long in expectation and beheld nothing amiss come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

7 Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius; who received us, and entertained us three days courteously. 8 And it was so, that the father of Publius lay sick of fever and dysentery: unto whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laying his hands on him healed him. 9 And when this was done, the rest also that had diseases in the island came, and were cured: 10 who also honored us with many honors; and when we sailed, they put on board such things as we needed.

11 And after three months we set sail in a ship of Alexandria which had wintered in the island, whose sign was The Twin Brothers. 12 And touching at Syracuse, we tarried there three days. 13 And from thence we made a circuit, and arrived at Rhegium: and after one day a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli; 14 where we found brethren, and were entreated to tarry with them seven days: and so we came to Rome. 15 And from thence the brethren, when they heard of us, came to meet us as far as The Market of Appius and The Three Taverns; whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.

16 And when we entered into Rome, Paul was suffered to abide by himself with the soldier that guarded him.

17 And it came to pass, that after three days he called together those that were the chief of the Jews: and when they were come together, he said unto them, I, brethren, though I had done nothing against the people, or the customs of our fathers, yet was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans: 18 who, when they had examined me, desired to set me at liberty, because there was no cause of death in me. 19 But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Cæsar; not that I had aught whereof to accuse my nation. 20 For this cause therefore did I entreat you to see and to speak with me: for because of the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain. 21 And they said unto him, We neither received letters from Judæa concerning thee, nor did any of the brethren come hither and report or speak any harm of thee. 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.

23 And when they had appointed him a day, they came to him into his lodging in great number; to whom he expounded the matter, testifying the kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning till evening. 24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved. 25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Spirit through Isaiah the prophet unto your fathers, 26 saying,

Go thou unto this people, and say,

By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand;

And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive:

27 For this people’s heart is waxed gross,

And their ears are dull of hearing,

And their eyes they have closed;

Lest haply they should perceive with their eyes,

And hear with their ears,

And understand with their heart,

And should turn again,

And I should heal them.

28 Be it known therefore unto you, that this salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles: they will also hear. 29 *28:29 Some ancient authorities insert v. 29: And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, having much disputing among themselves.

30 And he abode two whole years in his own hired dwelling, and received all that went in unto him, 31 preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, none forbidding him.

1 După ce am scăpat de primejdie, am aflat că ostrovul*Cap. 27:26. se chema Malta. 2 Barbarii*Rom. 1:14.1 Cor. 14:11.Col. 3:11. ne-au arătat o bunăvoință puțin obișnuită, ne-au primit pe toți la un foc mare, pe care-l aprinseseră din pricină că ploua și se lăsase un frig mare. 3 Pavel strânsese o grămadă de mărăcini și-i pusese pe foc; o năpârcă a ieșit afară din pricina căldurii și s-a lipit de mâna lui. 4 Barbarii, când au văzut năpârca spânzurată de mâna lui, au zis unii către alții: „Cu adevărat, omul acesta este un ucigaș, căci Dreptatea nu vrea să-l lase să trăiască, măcar că a fost scăpat din mare." 5 Pavel a scuturat năpârca în foc și n-a simțit niciun rău. 6 Oamenii aceia se așteptau să-l vadă umflându-se sau căzând deodată mort, dar, după ce au așteptat mult și au văzut că nu i se întâmplă niciun*Marcu 16:18.Luca 10:19. rău, și-au schimbat părerea și ziceau*Cap. 14:11. că este un zeu.

7 În împrejurimi erau moșiile mai-marelui ostrovului, numit Publius. El ne-a primit și ne-a ospătat cu cea mai mare bunăvoință, trei zile. 8 Tatăl lui Publius zăcea atunci în pat, bolnav de friguri și de urdinare. Pavel s-a dus la el, s-a rugat*Iac. 5:14,15., a pus*Marcu 6:5;7:32;16:18.Luca 4:40. Cap. 19:11,12.1 Cor. 12:9,28. mâinile peste el și l-a vindecat. 9 Atunci au venit și ceilalți bolnavi din ostrovul acela și au fost vindecați. 10 Ni s-a dat mare cinste*Mat. 15:6.1 Tim. 5:17. și, la plecarea noastră cu corabia, ne-au dat tot ce ne trebuia pentru drum.

11 După o ședere de trei luni, am pornit cu o corabie din Alexandria, care iernase în ostrov și care purta semnul Dioscurilor. 12 Am ajuns la Siracusa și am rămas acolo trei zile. 13 De acolo, am mers înainte, pe lângă coastă și am venit la Regio, iar a doua zi, fiindcă sufla vântul de miazăzi, după două zile, am venit la Puzole, 14 unde am dat peste niște frați, care ne-au rugat să mai rămânem șapte zile cu ei. Și așa am ajuns la Roma. 15 Din Roma ne-au ieșit înainte, până în „Forul lui Apiu" și până la „Cele Trei Cârciumi", frații, care auziseră despre noi. Când i-a văzut Pavel, a mulțumit lui Dumnezeu și s-a îmbărbătat. 16 Când am ajuns la Roma, sutașul a dat pe cei întemnițați căpitanului străjerilor palatului, iar lui*Cap. 24:25;27:3. Pavel i s-a îngăduit să rămână într-un loc deosebit, cu un ostaș care-l păzea.

17 După trei zile, Pavel a chemat pe mai-marii iudeilor și, când s-au adunat, le-a zis: „Fraților, fără să fi făcut*Cap. 24:12,13;25:8. ceva împotriva norodului sau obiceiurilor părinților noștri, am*Cap. 21:33. fost băgat la închisoare în Ierusalim și de acolo am fost dat în mâinile romanilor. 18 După ce m-au supus la cercetare*Cap. 22:24;24:10;25:8;26:31., ei aveau de gând să-mi dea drumul, pentru că nu era în mine nicio vină vrednică de moarte. 19 Dar iudeii s-au împotrivit și am*Cap. 25:11. fost silit să cer să fiu judecat de Cezar, fără să am de altfel niciun gând să pârăsc neamul meu. 20 De aceea, v-am chemat să vă văd și să vorbesc cu voi, căci din pricina*Cap. 26:6,7. nădejdii lui Israel port eu acest*Cap. 26:29.Efes. 3:1;4:1;6:20.2 Tim. 1:16;2:9.Filim. 10,13. lanț." 21 Ei i-au răspuns: „Noi n-am primit din Iudeea nicio scrisoare cu privire la tine și n-a venit aici niciun frate care să fi spus sau să fi vorbit ceva rău despre tine. 22 Dar am vrea să auzim părerea ta, pentru că știm că partida aceasta pretutindeni stârnește*Luca 2:34. Cap. 24:5,14.1 Pet. 2:12;4:14. împotrivire." 23 I-au hotărât o zi și au venit mai mulți la locuința lui. Pavel le-a vestit*Luca 24:27. Cap. 17:3;19:8. Împărăția lui Dumnezeu, le-a adus dovezi și a căutat să-i încredințeze, prin*Cap. 26:6,22. Legea lui Moise și prin Proroci, despre lucrurile privitoare la Isus. Vorbirea ținea de dimineață până seara. 24 Unii*Cap. 14:4;17:4;19:9. au crezut ce le spunea el, iar alții n-au crezut. 25 Fiindcă ei au plecat acasă în neînțelegere unii cu alții, Pavel n-a adăugat decât aceste vorbe: „Bine a spus Duhul Sfânt prin prorocul Isaia către părinții voștri, 26 când a zis: ‘Du-te*Is. 6:9.Ier. 5:21.Ezec. 12:2.Mat. 13:14,15.Marcu 4:12.Luca 8:10.Ioan 12:40.Rom. 11:8. la poporul acesta și zi-i: «Veți auzi cu urechile voastre, și nu veți înțelege; cu ochii voștri veți privi, și nu veți vedea. 27 Căci inima acestui norod s-a împietrit; ei aud greu cu urechile, și-au închis ochii, ca nu cumva să vadă cu ochii, să audă cu urechile, să înțeleagă cu inima, să se întoarcă la Dumnezeu și să-i vindec.»’ 28 Să știți dar că mântuirea aceasta a lui Dumnezeu a fost trimisă neamurilor*Mat. 21:41,43. Cap. 13:46,47;18:6;22:21;26:17,18.Rom. 11:11. și o vor asculta." 29 Când a zis aceste vorbe, iudeii au plecat, vorbind cu aprindere între ei.

30 Pavel a rămas doi ani întregi într-o casă pe care o luase cu chirie. Primea pe toți care veneau să-l vadă, 31 propovăduia*Cap. 4:31.Efes. 6:19. Împărăția lui Dumnezeu și învăța pe oameni, cu toată îndrăzneala și fără nicio piedică, cele privitoare la Domnul Isus Hristos.
