1 And Saul was consenting unto his death.

And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church which was in Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judæa and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him. 3 But Saul laid waste the church, entering into every house, and dragging men and women committed them to prison.

4 They therefore that were scattered abroad went about preaching the word. 5 And Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and proclaimed unto them the Christ. 6 And the multitudes gave heed with one accord unto the things that were spoken by Philip, when they heard, and saw the signs which he did. 7 For from many of those that had unclean spirits, they came out, crying with a loud voice: and many that were palsied, and that were lame, were healed. 8 And there was much joy in that city.

9 But there was a certain man, Simon by name, who beforetime in the city used sorcery, and amazed the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: 10 to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is that power of God which is called Great. 11 And they gave heed to him, because that of long time he had amazed them with his sorceries. 12 But when they believed Philip preaching good tidings concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 And Simon also himself believed: and being baptized, he continued with Philip; and beholding signs and great miracles wrought, he was amazed.

14 Now when the apostles that were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15 who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit: 16 for as yet it was fallen upon none of them: only they had been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19 saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit. 20 But Peter said unto him, Thy silver perish with thee, because thou hast thought to obtain the gift of God with money. 21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right before God. 22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray the Lord, if perhaps the thought of thy heart shall be forgiven thee. 23 For I see that thou art in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity. 24 And Simon answered and said, Pray ye for me to the Lord, that none of the things which ye have spoken come upon me.

25 They therefore, when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.

26 But an angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza: the same is desert. 27 And he arose and went: and behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure, who had come to Jerusalem to worship; 28 and he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. 30 And Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? 31 And he said, How can I, except some one shall guide me? And he besought Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of the scripture which he was reading was this,

He was led as a sheep to the slaughter;

And as a lamb before his shearer is dumb,

So he openeth not his mouth:

33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away:

His generation who shall declare?

For his life is taken from the earth.

34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other? 35 And Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this scripture, preached unto him Jesus. 36 And as they went on the way, they came unto a certain water; and the eunuch saith, Behold, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 *8:37 Some ancient authorities insert, wholly or in part, v. 37. And Philip said, If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, for he went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached the gospel to all the cities, till he came to Cæsarea.

Și toți*Cap. 11:19., afară de apostoli, s-au împrăștiat prin părțile Iudeii și ale Samariei. 2 Niște oameni temători de Dumnezeu au îngropat pe Ștefan și l-au*Gen. 23:3;50:10.2 Sam. 3:31. jelit cu mare tânguire. 3 Saul, de partea lui, făcea prăpăd*Cap. 7:58;9:1,13,21;22:4;26:10,11.1 Cor. 15:9.Gal. 1:13.Filip. 3:6.1 Tim. 1:13. în Biserică; intra prin case, lua cu sila pe bărbați și pe femei și-i arunca în temniță. 4 Cei ce se împrăștiaseră*Mat. 10:23. Cap. 11:19. mergeau din loc în loc și propovăduiau Cuvântul. 5 Filip*Cap. 6:5. s-a coborât în cetatea Samariei și le-a propovăduit pe Hristos. 6 Noroadele luau aminte cu un gând la cele spuse de Filip, când au auzit și au văzut semnele pe care le făcea. 7 Căci din mulți îndrăciți ieșeau duhuri*Marcu 16:17. necurate și scoteau mari țipete; mulți slăbănogi și șchiopi erau tămăduiți. 8 Și a fost o mare bucurie în cetatea aceasta. 9 În cetate era un om numit Simon, care zicea că este un om însemnat; el vrăjea*Cap. 13:6. și punea în uimire*Cap. 5:36. pe poporul Samariei. 10 Toți, de la mic până la mare, îl ascultau cu luare aminte și ziceau: „Acesta este puterea lui Dumnezeu, cea care se numește mare." 11 Îl ascultau cu luare aminte, pentru că multă vreme îi uimise cu vrăjitoriile lui. 12 Dar când au crezut pe Filip, care propovăduia Evanghelia*Cap. 1:3. Împărăției lui Dumnezeu și a Numelui lui Isus Hristos, au fost botezați, atât bărbați, cât și femei. 13 Chiar Simon a crezut și, după ce a fost botezat, nu se mai despărțea de Filip și privea cu uimire minunile și semnele mari care se făceau.

14 Apostolii, care erau în Ierusalim, când au auzit că Samaria a primit Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu, au trimis la ei pe Petru și pe Ioan. 15 Aceștia au venit la samariteni și s-au rugat pentru ei, ca să*Cap. 2:38. primească Duhul Sfânt. 16 Căci nu Se coborâse încă*Cap. 19:2. peste niciunul din ei, ci fuseseră numai*Mat. 28:19. Cap. 2:38. botezați în Numele*Cap. 10:48;19:5. Domnului Isus. 17 Atunci, Petru și Ioan au pus*Cap. 6:6;19:6.Evr. 6:2. mâinile peste ei, și aceia au primit Duhul Sfânt. 18 Când a văzut Simon că Duhul Sfânt era dat prin punerea mâinilor apostolilor, le-a dat bani 19 și a zis: „Dați-mi și mie puterea aceasta, pentru ca, peste oricine-mi voi pune mâinile, să primească Duhul Sfânt." 20 Dar Petru i-a zis: „Banii tăi să piară împreună cu tine, pentru că ai*Mat. 10:8.2 Împ. 5:16. crezut că darul*Cap. 2:38;10:45;11:17. lui Dumnezeu s-ar putea căpăta cu bani! 21 Tu n-ai nici parte, nici sorț în toată treaba aceasta, căci inima ta nu este curată înaintea lui Dumnezeu. 22 Pocăiește-te dar de această răutate a ta și roagă-te Domnului să*Dan. 4:27.2 Tim. 2:25. ți se ierte gândul acesta al inimii tale, dacă este cu putință, 23 căci văd că ești plin de fiere amară*Evr. 12:15. și în lanțurile fărădelegii." 24 Simon a răspuns: „Rugați-vă*Gen. 20:7,17.Exod 8:8.Num. 21:7.1 Împ. 13:6.Iov 42:8.Iac. 5:16. voi Domnului pentru mine, ca să nu mi se întâmple nimic din ce ați zis." 25 După ce au mărturisit despre Cuvântul Domnului și după ce l-au propovăduit, Petru și Ioan s-au întors la Ierusalim, vestind Evanghelia în multe sate ale samaritenilor.

26 Un înger al Domnului a vorbit lui Filip și i-a zis: „Scoală-te și du-te spre miazăzi, pe drumul care coboară spre Ierusalim la Gaza și care este pustiu." 27 Filip s-a sculat și a plecat. Și iată că un*Ţef. 3:10. etiopian, un famen cu mare putere la împărăteasa Candace a etiopienilor și îngrijitorul tuturor vistieriilor ei, venit*Ioan 12:20. la Ierusalim ca să se închine, 28 se întorcea de acolo și ședea în carul lui și citea pe prorocul Isaia. 29 Duhul a zis lui Filip: „Du-te și ajunge carul acesta!" 30 Filip a alergat și a auzit pe etiopian citind pe prorocul Isaia. El i-a zis: „Înțelegi tu ce citești?" 31 Famenul a răspuns: „Cum aș putea să înțeleg, dacă nu mă va călăuzi cineva?" Și a rugat pe Filip să se suie în car și să șadă împreună cu el. 32 Locul din Scriptură pe care-l citea era acesta: „El*Is. 53:7,8. a fost dus ca o oaie la tăiere și ca un miel fără glas înaintea celui ce-l tunde, așa nu Și-a deschis gura; 33 în smerenia Lui, judecata I-a fost luată. Și cine va zugrăvi pe cei din timpul Lui? Căci viața I-a fost luată de pe pământ." 34 Famenul a zis lui Filip: „Rogu-te, despre cine vorbește prorocul astfel? Despre sine sau despre vreun altul?" 35 Atunci, Filip a luat cuvântul, a început*Luca 24:27. Cap. 18:28. de la Scriptura aceasta și i-a propovăduit pe Isus. 36 Pe când își urmau ei drumul, au dat peste o apă. Și famenul a zis: „Uite apă, ce*Cap. 10:47. mă împiedică să fiu botezat?" 37 Filip a zis: „Dacă*Mat. 28:19.Marcu 16:16. crezi din toată inima, se poate." Famenul a răspuns: „Cred*Mat. 16:16.Ioan 6:69;9:35,38;11:27. Cap. 9:20.1 Ioan 4:15;5:5,13. că Isus Hristos este Fiul lui Dumnezeu." 38 A poruncit să stea carul, s-au coborât amândoi în apă, și Filip a botezat pe famen. 39 Când au ieșit din apă, Duhul*1 Împ. 18:12.2 Împ. 2:16.Ezec. 3:12,14. Domnului a răpit pe Filip, și famenul nu l-a mai văzut. În timp ce famenul își vedea de drum, plin de bucurie, 40 Filip se afla la Azot, de unde s-a dus până la Cezareea. Și propovăduia Evanghelia în toate cetățile prin care trecea.
