1 Behold, Jehovah maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. 2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the creditor, so with the debtor; as with the taker of interest, so with the giver of interest to him. 3 The earth shall be utterly emptied, and utterly laid waste; for Jehovah hath spoken this word. 4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the lofty people of the earth do languish. 5 The earth also is polluted under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are found guilty: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. 7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merry-hearted do sigh. 8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. 9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it. 10 The waste city is broken down; every house is shut up, that no man may come in. 11 There is a crying in the streets because of the wine; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone. 12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction. 13 For thus shall it be in the midst of the earth among the peoples, as the shaking of an olive-tree, as the gleanings when the vintage is done.

14 These shall lift up their voice, they shall shout; for the majesty of Jehovah they cry aloud from the sea. 15 Wherefore glorify ye Jehovah in the east, even the name of Jehovah, the God of Israel, in the isles of the sea. 16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs: Glory to the righteous.

But I said, I pine away, I pine away, woe is me! the treacherous have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous have dealt very treacherously. 17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth. 18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows on high are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble. 19 The earth is utterly broken, the earth is rent asunder, the earth is shaken violently. 20 The earth shall stagger like a drunken man, and shall sway to and fro like a hammock; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it, and it shall fall, and not rise again.

21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that Jehovah will punish the host of the high ones on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. 22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison; and after many days shall they be visited. 23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed; for Jehovah of hosts will reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem; and before his elders shall be glory.

1 Iată, Domnul deșartă țara și o pustiește, îi răstoarnă fața și risipește locuitorii; 2 cum se întâmplă preotului*Osea 4:9., se întâmplă și poporului; stăpânului, ca și slugii; stăpânei, ca și slujnicei; vânzătorului, ca și cumpărătorului*Ezec. 7:12,13.; celui ce dă cu împrumut, ca și celui ce ia cu împrumut; datornicului, ca și celui căruia îi este dator. 3 Țara este pustiită de tot și prădată; căci Domnul a hotărât așa. 4 Țara este tristă, sleită de puteri; locuitorii sunt mâhniți și tânjesc; căpeteniile poporului sunt fără putere, 5 căci țara*Gen. 3:17.Num. 35:33. a fost spurcată de locuitorii ei; ei călcau legile, nu țineau poruncile și rupeau legământul cel veșnic! 6 De aceea mănâncă blestemul*Mal. 4:6. țara și suferă locuitorii ei pedeapsa nelegiuirilor lor; de aceea sunt prăpădiți locuitorii țării și nu mai rămâne decât un mic număr din ei. 7 Mustul*Cap. 16:8,9.Ioel 1:10,12. stă trist, via este veștejită; toți cei ce erau cu inima veselă suspină. 8 A încetat desfătarea timpanelor*Ier. 7:34;16:9;25:10.Ezec. 26:13.Osea 2:11.Apoc. 18:22., s-a sfârșit veselia gălăgioasă, s-a dus bucuria harpei. 9 Nu se mai cântă când se bea vin și băuturile tari li se par amare celor ce le beau. 10 Cetatea pustie este dărâmată; toate casele sunt închise, nu mai intră nimeni în ele. 11 Pe ulițe se strigă după vin; s-a dus orice desfătare, nu mai este nicio veselie în țară. 12 Numai pustiire a mai rămas în cetate și porțile stau dărâmate. 13 Da, în țară, în mijlocul popoarelor, este ca*Cap. 17:5,6. atunci când se scutură măslinul sau ca la culesul ciorchinelor rămase după culesul viei.

14 Ceilalți însă, care vor mai rămâne, își înalță glasul, scot strigăte de veselie; de pe țărmurile mării, laudă măreția Domnului. 15 Proslăviți dar pe Domnul în locurile unde strălucește lumină, lăudați Numele*Mal. 1:11. Domnului Dumnezeului lui Israel în ostroavele mării! 16 De la marginile pământului auzim cântând: „Slavă celui neprihănit!" Dar eu zic: „Sunt pierdut! Sunt pierdut! Vai de mine!" Jefuitorii*Ier. 5:11. jefuiesc, jefuitorii se înverșunează la jaf. 17 Groaza*1 Împ. 19:17.Ier. 48:43,44.Amos 5:19., groapa și lațul vin peste tine, locuitor al țării! 18 Cel ce fuge dinaintea strigătelor de groază cade în groapă și cel ce se ridică din groapă se prinde în laț, căci se deschid stăvilarele*Gen. 7:11. de sus și se clatină temeliile*Ps. 18:7. pământului! 19 Pământul*Ier. 4:23. se rupe, pământul se sfărâmă, pământul se crapă, 20 pământul se*Cap. 19:14. clatină ca un om beat, tremură ca o colibă; păcatul lui îl apasă, cade și nu se mai ridică. 21 În ziua aceea, Domnul va pedepsi în cer oștirea de sus, iar pe pământ, pe împărații*Ps. 76:12. pământului. 22 Aceștia vor fi strânși ca prinși de război și puși într-o temniță, vor fi închiși în gherle și, după un mare număr de zile, vor fi pedepsiți. 23 Luna*Cap. 13:10;60:19.Ezec. 32:7.Ioel 2:31;3:15. va fi acoperită de rușine și soarele, de groază, căci Domnul oștirilor va împărăți*Apoc. 19:4,6. pe Muntele*Evr. 12:22. Sionului și la Ierusalim, strălucind de slavă în fața bătrânilor Lui.
