1 Now Pashhur, the son of Immer the priest, who was chief officer in the house of Jehovah, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2 Then Pashhur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the upper gate of Benjamin, which was in the house of Jehovah. 3 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Pashhur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah unto him, Jehovah hath not called thy name Pashhur, but Magor-missabib. 4 For thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it; and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall slay them with the sword. 5 Moreover I will give all the riches of this city, and all the gains thereof, and all the precious things thereof, yea, all the treasures of the kings of Judah will I give into the hand of their enemies; and they shall make them a prey, and take them, and carry them to Babylon. 6 And thou, Pashhur, and all that dwell in thy house shall go into captivity; and thou shalt come to Babylon, and there thou shalt die, and there shalt thou be buried, thou, and all thy friends, to whom thou hast prophesied falsely.

7 O Jehovah, thou hast persuaded me, and I was persuaded; thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am become a laughing-stock all the day, every one mocketh me. 8 For as often as I speak, I cry out; I cry, Violence and destruction! because the word of Jehovah is made a reproach unto me, and a derision, all the day. 9 And if I say, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name, then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with forbearing, and I cannot contain. 10 For I have heard the defaming of many, terror on every side. Denounce, and we will denounce him, say all my familiar friends, they that watch for my fall; peradventure he will be persuaded, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him. 11 But Jehovah is with me as a mighty one and a terrible: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail; they shall be utterly put to shame, because they have not dealt wisely, even with an everlasting dishonor which shall never be forgotten. 12 But, O Jehovah of hosts, that triest the righteous, that seest the heart and the mind, let me see thy vengeance on them; for unto thee have I revealed my cause. 13 Sing unto Jehovah, praise ye Jehovah; for he hath delivered the soul of the needy from the hand of evil-doers.

14 Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed. 15 Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man-child is born unto thee; making him very glad. 16 And let that man be as the cities which Jehovah overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear a cry in the morning, and shouting at noontime; 17 because he slew me not from the womb; and so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great. 18 Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

Voi da, de asemenea, pe tot Iuda în mâinile împăratului Babilonului, care-i va duce robi la Babilon și-i va ucide cu sabia. 5 Toate bogățiile cetății acesteia, tot rodul muncii ei, tot ce are ea mai scump și toate vistieriile împăraților lui Iuda le voi da*2 Împ. 20:17;24:12-16;25:13. Cap. 3:24. în mâinile vrăjmașilor lor; aceștia le vor jefui, le vor lua și le vor duce la Babilon. 6 Chiar și tu, Pașhur, și toți cei ce locuiesc în casa ta veți merge la Babilon în robie; acolo vei muri și acolo vei fi îngropat, tu și toți prietenii tăi cărora le-ai prorocit*Cap. 14:13,14;28:15;29:21. minciuni.’"

7 M-ai înduplecat, Doamne, și m-am lăsat înduplecat; ai*Cap. 1:6,7. fost mai tare decât mine și m-ai biruit! În fiecare zi sunt o pricină de râs*Plâng. 3:14., toată lumea își bate joc de mine. 8 Căci ori de câte ori vorbesc, trebuie să*Cap. 6:7. strig: „Silnicie și apăsare!" Așa încât Cuvântul Domnului îmi aduce numai ocară și batjocură toată ziua. 9 Dacă zic: „Nu voi mai pomeni de El și nu voi mai vorbi în Numele Lui", iată că în inima mea este ca un foc*Iov 32:18,19.Ps. 39:3. mistuitor, închis în oasele mele. Caut să-l opresc, dar nu*Iov 32:18.Fapte 18:5. pot. 10 Căci aud*Ps. 31:13. vorbele rele ale multora, spaima care domnește împrejur. „Învinuiți-l", strigă ei. „Haidem să-l învinuim!" Toți cei ce trăiau în pace*Iov 19:19.Ps. 41:9;55:13,14.Luca 11:53,54. cu mine pândesc să vadă dacă mă clatin și zic: „Poate că se va lăsa prins, vom pune mâna pe el și ne vom răzbuna pe el!" 11 Dar Domnul*Cap. 1:8,19. este cu mine ca un viteaz puternic, de aceea prigonitorii mei se vor poticni și nu vor*Cap. 15:20;17:18. birui. Se vor umple de rușine că n-au lucrat cu chibzuință; de o veșnică rușine*Cap. 23:40., care nu se va uita! 12 Și acum, Doamne, Dumnezeul oștirilor, care încerci pe cel*Cap. 11:20;17:10. neprihănit, care pătrunzi rărunchii și inimile, fă-mă*Ps. 54:7;59:10. să văd răzbunarea Ta împotriva lor! Căci Ție îmi încredințez pricina. 13 Cântați Domnului, lăudați pe Domnul! Căci El izbăvește*Ps. 35:9,10;109:30,31. sufletul celui nenorocit din mâna celor răi. 14 Blestemată*Iov 3:3. Cap. 15:10. să fie ziua când m-am născut! Ziua în care m-a născut mama să nu fie binecuvântată! 15 Blestemat să fie omul care a adus vestea aceasta tatălui meu: „Ți s-a născut un copil de parte bărbătească", și l-a umplut de bucurie cu ea! 16 Omul acela să ajungă precum cetățile pe care le-a nimicit*Gen. 19:25. Domnul fără milă! Să audă gemete dimineața*Cap. 18:22. și strigăte de război la amiază! 17 De ce n-am fost*Iov 3:10,11. omorât în pântecele mamei, ca să-mi fi fost ea mormântul meu! De ce n-a rămas ea veșnic însărcinată cu mine? 18 Pentru ce am ieșit*Iov 3:20. din pântecele mamei ca să văd*Plâng. 3:1. numai suferință și durere și să-mi isprăvesc zilele în rușine?
