1 Jehovah showed me, and, behold, two baskets of figs set before the temple of Jehovah, after that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, with the craftsmen and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon. 2 One basket had very good figs, like the figs that are first-ripe; and the other basket had very bad figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad. 3 Then said Jehovah unto me, What seest thou, Jeremiah? And I said, Figs; the good figs, very good; and the bad, very bad, that cannot be eaten, they are so bad.

4 And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, 5 Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so will I regard the captives of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans, for good. 6 For I will set mine eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them again to this land: and I will build them, and not pull them down; and I will plant them, and not pluck them up. 7 And I will give them a heart to know me, that I am Jehovah: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God; for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.

8 And as the bad figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so bad, surely thus saith Jehovah, So will I give up Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem, that remain in this land, and them that dwell in the land of Egypt, 9 I will even give them up to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth for evil; to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places whither I shall drive them. 10 And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, among them, till they be consumed from off the land that I gave unto them and to their fathers.

1 Domnul*Amos 7:1,4;8:1. mi-a arătat două coșuri cu smochine puse înaintea Templului Domnului, după ce Nebucadnețar, împăratul*2 Împ. 24:12.2 Cron. 36:10. Babilonului, strămutase din Ierusalim și dusese în Babilon pe Ieconia*Cap. 22:24;29:2., fiul lui Ioiachim, împăratul lui Iuda, pe căpeteniile lui Iuda, pe lemnari și fierari. 2 Unul din coșuri avea smochine foarte bune, ca smochinele care se coc întâi, iar celălalt coș avea smochine foarte rele, care nu se puteau mânca de rele ce erau. 3 Domnul mi-a zis: „Ce vezi, Ieremio?" Eu am răspuns: „Niște smochine! Smochinele cele bune sunt foarte bune, iar cele rele sunt foarte rele și, de rele ce sunt, nu se pot mânca." 4 Cuvântul Domnului mi-a vorbit astfel: 5 „Așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Cum deosebești tu aceste smochine bune, așa voi deosebi Eu, ca să le dau îndurare, pe prinșii de război ai lui Iuda, pe care i-am trimis din locul acesta în țara haldeenilor. 6 Îi voi privi cu un ochi binevoitor și-i voi aduce*Cap. 12:15;29:10. înapoi în țara aceasta; îi voi așeza*Cap. 32:41;33:7;42:10. și nu-i voi mai nimici, îi voi sădi și nu-i voi mai smulge. 7 Le voi da o inimă*Deut. 30:6. Cap. 32:39.Ezec. 11:19;36:26,27. ca să înțeleagă că Eu sunt Domnul. Ei vor fi poporul*Cap. 30:22;31:33;32:38. Meu, iar Eu voi fi Dumnezeul lor, dacă se vor întoarce la Mine*Cap. 29:13. cu toată inima lor. 8 Și ca smochinele cele rele*Cap. 29:17., care, de rele ce sunt, nu se pot mânca’, zice Domnul, ‘așa voi face să ajungă Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, căpeteniile lui și rămășița Ierusalimului, cei ce au rămas în țara aceasta și cei ce locuiesc*Cap. 43;44. în țara Egiptului. 9 Îi voi face de pomină*Deut. 28:25,37.1 Împ. 9:7.2 Cron. 7:20. Cap. 15:4;29:18;34:17., o pricină de nenorocire pentru toate împărățiile pământului, de ocară*Ps. 44:13,14., de batjocură, de râs și de blestem*Cap. 29:18,22. în toate locurile unde îi voi izgoni. 10 Voi trimite în ei sabia, foametea și ciuma, până vor pieri din țara pe care le-o dădusem lor și părinților lor.’"
