1 Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, 2 and said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, and have hearkened unto my voice in all that I commanded you: 3 ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of Jehovah your God. 4 And now Jehovah your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he spake unto them: therefore now turn ye, and get you unto your tents, unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of Jehovah gave you beyond the Jordan. 5 Only take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, to love Jehovah your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. 6 So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away; and they went unto their tents.

7 Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given inheritance in Bashan; but unto the other half gave Joshua among their brethren beyond the Jordan westward. Moreover when Joshua sent them away unto their tents, he blessed them, 8 and spake unto them, saying, Return with much wealth unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren. 9 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the commandment of Jehovah by Moses.

10 And when they came unto the region about the Jordan, that is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, a great altar to look upon. 11 And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar in the forefront of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that pertaineth to the children of Israel. 12 And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war.

13 And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, 14 and with him ten princes, one prince of a fathers’ house for each of the tribes of Israel; and they were every one of them head of their fathers’ houses among the thousands of Israel. 15 And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying, 16 Thus saith the whole congregation of Jehovah, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following Jehovah, in that ye have builded you an altar, to rebel this day against Jehovah? 17 Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves unto this day, although there came a plague upon the congregation of Jehovah, 18 that ye must turn away this day from following Jehovah? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to-day against Jehovah, that to-morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel. 19 Howbeit, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of Jehovah, wherein Jehovah’s tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against Jehovah, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar besides the altar of Jehovah our God. 20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.

21 Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spake unto the heads of the thousands of Israel, 22 The Mighty One, God, Jehovah, the Mighty One, God, Jehovah, he knoweth; and Israel he shall know: if it be in rebellion, or if in trespass against Jehovah (save thou us not this day), 23 that we have built us an altar to turn away from following Jehovah; or if to offer thereon burnt-offering or meal-offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace-offerings thereon, let Jehovah himself require it; 24 and if we have not rather out of carefulness done this, and of purpose, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with Jehovah, the God of Israel? 25 for Jehovah hath made the Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no portion in Jehovah: so might your children make our children cease from fearing Jehovah. 26 Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice: 27 but it shall be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may do the service of Jehovah before him with our burnt-offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace-offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no portion in Jehovah. 28 Therefore said we, It shall be, when they so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we shall say, Behold the pattern of the altar of Jehovah, which our fathers made, not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you. 29 Far be it from us that we should rebel against Jehovah, and turn away this day from following Jehovah, to build an altar for burnt-offering, for meal-offering, or for sacrifice, besides the altar of Jehovah our God that is before his tabernacle.

30 And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation, even the heads of the thousands of Israel that were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them well. 31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we know that Jehovah is in the midst of us, because ye have not committed this trespass against Jehovah: now have ye delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of Jehovah. 32 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again. 33 And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and spake no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and the children of Gad dwelt. 34 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: For, said they, it is a witness between us that Jehovah is God.

1 Atunci, Iosua a chemat pe rubeniți, pe gadiți și jumătate din seminția lui Manase 2 și le-a zis: „Voi ați păzit tot*Num. 32:20.Deut. 3:18. ce v-a poruncit Moise, robul Domnului, și*Cap. 1:16,17. ați ascultat de glasul meu în tot ce v-am poruncit. 3 N-ați părăsit pe frații voștri de o bună bucată de vreme până în ziua de azi și ați păzit rânduielile și poruncile Domnului Dumnezeului vostru. 4 Acum, când Domnul Dumnezeul vostru a dat odihnă fraților voștri, cum le spusese, întoarceți-vă și duceți-vă la corturile voastre, în țara dată în stăpânirea voastră, pe*Num. 32:33.Deut. 29:8. Cap. 13:8. care v-a dat-o Moise, robul Domnului, dincolo de Iordan. 5 Aveți grijă numai*Deut. 6:6,17;11:22. să păziți și să împliniți poruncile și legile pe care vi le-a dat Moise, robul Domnului: să*Deut. 10:12. iubiți pe Domnul Dumnezeul vostru, să umblați în toate căile Lui, să țineți poruncile Lui, să vă alipiți de El și să-I slujiți din toată inima voastră și din tot sufletul vostru." 6 Și Iosua i-a binecuvântat*Gen. 47:7.Exod 39:43. Cap. 14:13.2 Sam. 6:18.Luca 24:50. și le-a dat drumul; și ei au plecat la corturile lor. 7 Moise dăduse unei jumătăți din seminția lui Manase o moștenire în Basan, și Iosua a dat celeilalte*Cap. 17:5. jumătăți o moștenire lângă frații lor, dincoace de Iordan, la apus. 8 Când i-a trimis Iosua la corturile lor, i-a binecuvântat și le-a zis: „Voi vă întoarceți la corturile voastre cu mari bogății, cu foarte multe turme și cu o mare mulțime de argint, de aur, de aramă, de fier și de îmbrăcăminte. Împărțiți*Num. 31:27.1 Sam. 30:24. cu frații voștri prada luată de la vrăjmașii voștri." 9 Fiii lui Ruben, fiii lui Gad și jumătate din seminția lui Manase s-au întors acasă, lăsând pe copiii lui Israel la Silo, în țara Canaanului, ca să se ducă în țara Galaadului*Num. 32:1;26:29., care era moșia lor și unde se așezaseră, cum poruncise lui Moise Domnul.

10 Când au ajuns pe malurile Iordanului, care fac parte din țara Canaanului, fiii lui Ruben, fiii lui Gad și jumătate din seminția lui Manase au zidit acolo un altar lângă Iordan, un altar a cărui mărime izbea privirile. 11 Copiii lui Israel au auzit*Deut. 13:12.Jud. 20:12. zicându-se: „Iată că fiii lui Ruben, fiii lui Gad și jumătate din seminția lui Manase au zidit un altar în fața țării Canaanului, pe malurile Iordanului, în părțile copiilor lui Israel." 12 Când au auzit copiii lui Israel lucrul acesta, toată adunarea*Jud. 20:1. copiilor lui Israel s-a strâns la Silo, ca să se suie împotriva lor și să se bată cu ei. 13 Copiii lui Israel au trimis*Deut. 13:14.Jud. 20:12. la fiii lui Ruben, la fiii lui Gad și la jumătate din seminția lui Manase, în țara Galaadului, pe Fineas*Exod 6:25.Num. 25:7., fiul preotului Eleazar, 14 și zece căpetenii cu el, câte o căpetenie de fiecare casă părintească pentru fiecare din semințiile lui Israel; toți erau căpetenii*Num. 1:4. de casă părintească între miile lui Israel. 15 Ei au venit la fiii lui Ruben, la fiii lui Gad și la jumătate din seminția lui Manase, în țara Galaadului, și le-au vorbit astfel: 16 „Așa vorbește toată adunarea Domnului: ‘Ce înseamnă păcatul acesta pe care l-ați săvârșit față de Dumnezeul lui Israel și pentru ce vă abateți acum de la Domnul, zidindu-vă un altar, ca să vă răzvrătiți*Lev. 17:8,9.Deut. 12:13,14. azi împotriva Domnului? 17 Privim oare ca o nimica nelegiuirea lui Peor*Num. 25:3,4.Deut. 4:3., a cărui pată n-am ridicat-o până acum de peste noi, cu toată urgia pe care a adus-o ea asupra adunării Domnului? 18 Și voi vă abateți astăzi de la Domnul! Dacă vă răzvrătiți azi împotriva Domnului, mâine El Se va mânia*Num. 16:22. împotriva întregii adunări a lui Israel. 19 Dacă priviți ca necurată țara care este moșia voastră, treceți în țara care este moșia Domnului, unde este așezată locuința*Cap. 18:1. Domnului, și așezați-vă în mijlocul nostru, dar nu vă răzvrătiți împotriva Domnului și nu vă despărțiți de noi, zidindu-vă un altar, afară de altarul Domnului Dumnezeului nostru! 20 Acan*Cap. 7:1,5., fiul lui Zerah, n-a săvârșit oare un păcat cu privire la lucrurile date spre nimicire și nu S-a aprins de mânie Domnul împotriva întregii adunări a lui Israel? Și el n-a fost singurul care a pierit din pricina nelegiuirii lui.’"

21 Fiii lui Ruben, fiii lui Gad și jumătate din seminția lui Manase au răspuns astfel căpeteniilor peste miile lui Israel: 22 „Domnul Dumnezeu, Cel Atotputernic, Domnul Dumnezeu*Deut. 10:17., Cel Atotputernic, știe*1 Împ. 8:39.Iov 10:7;23:10.Ps. 44:21;139:1,2.Ier. 12:3.2 Cor. 11:11,31. și Israel însuși să știe lucrul acesta! Dacă din răzvrătire și păcătuire împotriva Domnului am făcut lucrul acesta, să nu ne vină în ajutor Domnul în ziua aceasta! 23 Dacă ne-am zidit un altar ca să ne abatem de la Domnul, ca să aducem pe el arderi-de-tot și daruri de mâncare și ca să aducem pe el jertfe de mulțumire, Domnul să ne ceară*Deut. 18:19.1 Sam. 20:16. socoteală de aceasta! 24 Am făcut lucrul acesta mai degrabă de frică, gândindu-ne că într-o zi s-ar putea ca fiii voștri să zică fiilor noștri: ‘Ce legătură este între voi și Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel? 25 Domnul a pus Iordanul hotar între noi și voi, fii ai lui Ruben și fii ai lui Gad: voi n-aveți parte de Domnul!’ Și fiii voștri ar face astfel ca fiii noștri să nu se mai teamă de Domnul. 26 De aceea am zis: Să ne zidim deci un altar, nu pentru arderi-de-tot și pentru jertfe, 27 ci ca o*Gen. 31:48. Cap. 24:27; 22:34. mărturie între noi și voi, între urmașii noștri și ai voștri, că voim să slujim*Deut. 12:5,6,11,12,17,18,26,27. Domnului, înaintea Feței Lui, prin arderile-de-tot și prin jertfele noastre de ispășire și de mulțumire, ca să nu zică fiii voștri într-o zi fiilor noștri: ‘Voi n-aveți parte de Domnul!’ 28 Noi am zis: Dacă mai târziu ne vor vorbi astfel nouă sau urmașilor noștri, vom răspunde: ‘Priviți chipul altarului Domnului pe care l-au făcut părinții noștri nu pentru arderi-de-tot și pentru jertfe, ci ca mărturie între noi și voi.’ 29 Departe de noi gândul să ne răzvrătim împotriva Domnului și să ne abatem astăzi de la Domnul, zidind*Deut. 12:13,14. un altar pentru arderi-de-tot, pentru daruri de mâncare și pentru jertfe, afară de altarul Domnului Dumnezeului nostru, care este înaintea locașului Lui!" 30 Când au auzit preotul Fineas și căpeteniile adunării, căpeteniile peste miile lui Israel, care erau cu el, cuvintele pe care le-au rostit fiii lui Ruben, fiii lui Gad și fiii lui Manase au rămas mulțumiți. 31 Și Fineas, fiul preotului Eleazar, a zis fiilor lui Ruben, fiilor lui Gad și fiilor lui Manase: „Cunoaștem acum că Domnul este în mijlocul*Lev. 26:11,12.2 Cron. 15:2. nostru, fiindcă n-ați săvârșit păcatul acesta împotriva Domnului și ați izbăvit astfel pe copiii lui Israel din mâna Domnului." 32 Fineas, fiul preotului Eleazar, și căpeteniile au părăsit pe fiii lui Ruben și pe fiii lui Gad și s-au întors din țara Galaadului în țara Canaanului, la copiii lui Israel, cărora le-au făcut o dare de seamă. 33 Copiii lui Israel au rămas mulțumiți; au binecuvântat*1 Cron. 29:20.Neem. 8:6.Dan. 2:19.Luca 2:28. pe Dumnezeu și n-au mai vorbit să se suie înarmați ca să pustiască țara pe care o locuiau fiii lui Ruben și fiii lui Gad. 34 Fiii lui Ruben și fiii lui Gad au numit altarul acela Ed (Martor), „căci", au zis ei, „el este martor între noi că Domnul este Dumnezeu".
