1 And he called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. 2 And he sent them forth to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. 3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staff, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats. 4 And into whatsoever house ye enter, there abide, and thence depart. 5 And as many as receive you not, when ye depart from that city, shake off the dust from your feet for a testimony against them. 6 And they departed, and went throughout the villages, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere.

7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done: and he was much perplexed, because that it was said by some, that John was risen from the dead; 8 and by some, that Elijah had appeared; and by others, that one of the old prophets was risen again. 9 And Herod said, John I beheaded: but who is this, about whom I hear such things? And he sought to see him.

10 And the apostles, when they were returned, declared unto him what things they had done. And he took them, and withdrew apart to a city called Bethsaida. 11 But the multitudes perceiving it followed him: and he welcomed them, and spake to them of the kingdom of God, and them that had need of healing he cured. 12 And the day began to wear away; and the twelve came, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages and country round about, and lodge, and get provisions: for we are here in a desert place. 13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more than five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy food for all this people. 14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said unto his disciples, Make them sit down in companies, about fifty each. 15 And they did so, and made them all sit down. 16 And he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake; and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude. 17 And they ate, and were all filled: and there was taken up that which remained over to them of broken pieces, twelve baskets.

18 And it came to pass, as he was praying apart, the disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Who do the multitudes say that I am? 19 And they answering said, John the Baptist; but others say, Elijah; and others, that one of the old prophets is risen again. 20 And he said unto them, But who say ye that I am? And Peter answering said, The Christ of God. 21 But he charged them, and commanded them to tell this to no man; 22 saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up. 23 And he said unto all, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever would save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man profited, if he gain the whole world, and lose or forfeit his own self? 26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in his own glory, and the glory of the Father, and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you of a truth, There are some of them that stand here, who shall in no wise taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

28 And it came to pass about eight days after these sayings, that he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up into the mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment became white and dazzling. 30 And behold, there talked with him two men, who were Moses and Elijah; 31 who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. 33 And it came to pass, as they were parting from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah: not knowing what he said. 34 And while he said these things, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my Son, my chosen: hear ye him. 36 And when the voice came, Jesus was found alone. And they held their peace, and told no man in those days any of the things which they had seen.

37 And it came to pass, on the next day, when they were come down from the mountain, a great multitude met him. 38 And behold, a man from the multitude cried, saying, Teacher, I beseech thee to look upon my son; for he is mine only child: 39 and behold, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth, and it hardly departeth from him, bruising him sorely. 40 And I besought thy disciples to cast it out; and they could not. 41 And Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and bear with you? bring hither thy son. 42 And as he was yet a coming, the demon dashed him down, and tare him grievously. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all astonished at the majesty of God.

But while all were marvelling at all the things which he did, he said unto his disciples, 44 Let these words sink into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered up into the hands of men. 45 But they understood not this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

46 And there arose a reasoning among them, which of them was the greatest. 47 But when Jesus saw the reasoning of their heart, he took a little child, and set him by his side, 48 and said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this little child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same is great.

49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out demons in thy name; and we forbade him, because he followeth not with us. 50 But Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against you is for you.

51 And it came to pass, when the days were well-nigh come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, 52 and sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. 53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he were going to Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we bid fire to come down from heaven, and consume them? 55 But he turned, and rebuked them. 56 And they went to another village.

57 And as they went on the way, a certain man said unto him, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 58 And Jesus said unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 But he said unto him, Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but go thou and publish abroad the kingdom of God. 61 And another also said, I will follow thee, Lord; but first suffer me to bid farewell to them that are at my house. 62 But Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

1 Isus*Mat. 10:1.Marcu 3:13;6:7. a chemat pe cei doisprezece ucenici ai Săi, le-a dat putere și stăpânire peste toți dracii și să vindece bolile. 2 Apoi, i-a*Mat. 10:7,8.Marcu 6:12. Cap. 10:1,9. trimis să propovăduiască Împărăția lui Dumnezeu și să tămăduiască pe cei bolnavi. 3 „Să nu luați nimic cu voi pe drum", le-a*Mat. 10:9.Marcu 6:8. Cap. 10:4; 22:35. zis El; „nici toiag, nici traistă, nici pâine, nici bani, nici două haine.4 În*Mat. 10:11.Marcu 6:10.orice casă veți intra, să rămâneți acolo, până veți pleca din locul acela.5 Și*Mat. 10:14.dacă nu vă vor primi oamenii, să ieșiți din cetatea aceea și să scuturați*Fapte 13:51.praful de pe picioarele voastre, ca mărturie împotriva lor."6 Ei*Marcu 6:12. au plecat și au mers din sat în sat, propovăduind Evanghelia și săvârșind pretutindeni tămăduiri.

7 Cârmuitorul*Mat. 14:1.Marcu 6:14. Irod a auzit vorbindu-se despre toate lucrurile săvârșite de Isus și stătea în cumpănă, neștiind ce să creadă. Căci unii ziceau că a înviat Ioan din morți; 8 alții ziceau că s-a arătat Ilie; și alții ziceau că a înviat vreun proroc din cei din vechime. 9 Dar Irod zicea: „Lui Ioan i-am tăiat capul; cine este oare Acesta despre care aud astfel de lucruri?" Și*Cap. 23:8. căuta să-L vadă.

10 Apostolii, când*Marcu 6:30. s-au întors, au istorisit lui Isus tot ce făcuseră. El*Mat. 14:13. i-a luat cu Sine și S-a dus la o parte, lângă o cetate numită Betsaida. 11 Noroadele au priceput lucrul acesta și au mers după El. Isus le-a primit bine, le vorbea despre Împărăția lui Dumnezeu și vindeca pe cei ce aveau trebuință de vindecare. 12 Fiindcă*Mat. 14:15.Marcu 6:35.Ioan 6:1,5. ziua se pleca spre seară, cei doisprezece s-au apropiat și I-au zis: „Dă drumul noroadelor, ca să se ducă în satele și cătunele de primprejur să găzduiască și să-și caute de ale mâncării, pentru că aici suntem într-un loc pustiu." 13 Isus le-a zis: „Dați-le voi să mănânce!" Dar ei au răspuns: „N-avem decât cinci pâini și doi pești, afară numai dacă ne vom duce noi înșine să cumpărăm merinde pentru tot norodul acesta." 14 Și erau aproape cinci mii de bărbați. Isus a zis ucenicilor Săi: „Puneți-i să șadă jos în cete de câte cincizeci."15 Așa au și făcut: i-au pus pe toți să șadă jos. 16 Isus a luat cele cinci pâini și cei doi pești, Și-a ridicat ochii spre cer și le-a binecuvântat. Apoi, le-a frânt și le-a dat ucenicilor să le împartă norodului. 17 Au mâncat toți și s-au săturat și au ridicat douăsprezece coșuri pline cu firimiturile rămase.

18 Într-o*Mat. 16:13.Marcu 8:27. zi, pe când Se ruga Isus singur deoparte, având cu El pe ucenicii Lui, le-a pus întrebarea următoare: „Cine zic oamenii că sunt Eu?"19 Ei I-au răspuns: „Unii zic că ești Ioan*Mat. 14:2. Vers. 7,8. Botezătorul; alții zic că ești Ilie; alții zic că a înviat un proroc din cei din vechime." 20 „Dar voi", i-a întrebat El, „cine ziceți că sunt?" „Hristosul lui Dumnezeu!", I-a răspuns Petru*Mat. 16:16.Ioan 6:69.. 21 Isus*Mat. 16:20. le-a poruncit cu tărie să nu spună nimănui lucrul acesta. 22 Apoi, a adăugat că Fiul*Mat. 16:21;17:22. omului trebuie să pătimească multe, să fie tăgăduit de bătrâni, de preoții cei mai de seamă și de cărturari, să fie omorât și a treia zi să învieze.

23 Apoi*Mat. 10:38;16:24.Marcu 8:34. Cap. 14:27. a zis tuturor: „Dacă voiește cineva să vină după Mine, să se lepede de sine, să-și ia crucea în fiecare zi și să Mă urmeze.24 Fiindcă oricine va voi să-și scape viața o va pierde, dar oricine își va pierde viața pentru Mine o va mântui.25 Și*Mat. 16:20.Marcu 8:36.ce ar folosi unui om să câștige toată lumea, dacă s-ar prăpădi sau s-ar pierde pe sine însuși?26 Căci*Mat. 20:33.Marcu 8:38.2 Tim. 2:12.de oricine se va rușina de Mine și de cuvintele Mele, se va rușina și Fiul omului de el, când va veni în slava Sa și a Tatălui și a sfinților îngeri.27 Adevărat*Mat. 16:28.Marcu 9:1.vă spun că sunt unii din cei ce stau aici care nu vor gusta moartea până nu vor vedea Împărăția lui Dumnezeu."

28 Cam*Mat. 17:1.Marcu 9:2. la opt zile după cuvintele acestea, Isus a luat cu El pe Petru, pe Ioan și pe Iacov și S-a suit pe munte să Se roage. 29 Pe când Se ruga, I s-a schimbat înfățișarea feței, și îmbrăcămintea I s-a făcut albă strălucitoare. 30 Și iată că stăteau de vorbă cu El doi bărbați: erau Moise și Ilie, 31 care se arătaseră în slavă și vorbeau despre sfârșitul Lui, pe care avea să-l aibă în Ierusalim. 32 Petru și tovarășii lui erau*Dan. 8:18;10:9. îngreuiați de somn, dar, când s-au deșteptat bine, au văzut slava lui Isus și pe cei doi bărbați care stăteau împreună cu El. 33 În clipa când se despărțeau bărbații aceștia de Isus, Petru a zis lui Isus: „Învățătorule, este bine să fim aici; să facem trei colibe: una pentru Tine, una pentru Moise și una pentru Ilie." Nu știa ce spune. 34 Pe când vorbea el astfel, a venit un nor și i-a acoperit cu umbra lui; ucenicii s-au înspăimântat când i-au văzut intrând în nor. 35 Și din nor s-a auzit un glas care zicea: „Acesta*Mat. 3:17. este Fiul Meu preaiubit: de El să ascultați*Fapte 3:22.." 36 Când s-a auzit glasul acela, Isus a rămas singur. Ucenicii*Mat. 17:9. au tăcut și n-au spus, în zilele acelea, nimănui nimic din cele ce văzuseră.

37 A*Mat. 17:14.Marcu 9:14,17. doua zi, când s-au coborât de pe munte, o gloată mare a întâmpinat pe Isus. 38 Și un om din mijlocul mulțimii a strigat: „Învățătorule, rogu-Te, uită-Te cu îndurare la fiul meu, fiindcă îl am numai pe el. 39 Îl apucă un duh și, deodată, răcnește; și duhul îl scutură cu putere, așa că băiatul face spumă la gură și cu anevoie se duce duhul de la el, după ce l-a stropșit de tot. 40 Am rugat pe ucenicii Tăi să-l scoată și n-au putut." 41 „O, neam necredincios și pornit la rău", a răspuns Isus, „până când voi fi cu voi și vă voi suferi? Adu aici pe fiul tău."42 Pe când venea băiatul, dracul l-a trântit la pământ și l-a scuturat cu putere. Dar Isus a certat duhul necurat, a vindecat pe băiat și l-a dat înapoi tatălui său. 43 Și toți au rămas uimiți de mărirea lui Dumnezeu.

Pe când toți se minunau de tot ce făcea Isus, El a zis ucenicilor Săi: 44 „Voi ascultați*Mat. 17:22.bine ce vă spun: Fiul omului va fi dat în mâinile oamenilor!"45 Dar*Marcu 9:32. Cap. 2:50; 18:34. ucenicii nu înțelegeau cuvintele acestea, căci erau acoperite pentru ei, ca să nu le priceapă, și se temeau să-L întrebe în privința aceasta.

46 Apoi*Mat. 18:1.Marcu 9:34., le-a venit în gând să știe cine dintre ei ar fi cel mai mare. 47 Isus le-a cunoscut gândul inimii, a luat un copilaș, l-a pus lângă El 48 și le-a zis: „Oricine*Mat. 10:40;18:5.Marcu 9:37.Ioan 12:44;13:20.primește pe acest copilaș în Numele Meu pe Mine Mă primește și oricine Mă primește pe Mine primește pe Cel ce M-a trimis pe Mine. Fiindcă*Mat. 23:11,12.cine este cel mai mic între voi toți, acela este mare."49 Ioan a luat cuvântul și a zis*Marcu 9:38.Num. 11:28.: „Învățătorule, noi am văzut pe un om scoțând draci în Numele Tău și l-am oprit, pentru că nu merge după noi." 50 „Nu-l opriți", i-a răspuns Isus, „fiindcă cine*Mat. 12:30. Cap. 11:23.nu este împotriva voastră este pentru voi."

51 Când s-a apropiat vremea în care avea să fie luat în cer*Marcu 16:19.Fapte 1:2., Isus Și-a îndreptat fața hotărât să meargă la Ierusalim. 52 A trimis înainte niște soli, care s-au dus și au intrat într-un sat al samaritenilor, ca să-I pregătească un loc de găzduit. 53 Dar*Ioan 4:4,9. ei nu L-au primit, pentru că Isus Se îndrepta să meargă spre Ierusalim. 54 Ucenicii Săi, Iacov și Ioan, când au văzut lucrul acesta, au zis: „Doamne, vrei să poruncim să se coboare foc din cer și să-i mistuie, cum a făcut Ilie*2 Împ. 1:10,12.?" 55 Isus S-a întors spre ei, i-a certat și le-a zis: „Nu știți de ce duh sunteți însuflețiți!56 Căci Fiul*Ioan 3:17;12:47.omului a venit nu ca să piardă sufletele oamenilor, ci să le mântuiască." Și au plecat într-alt sat.

57 Pe*Mat. 8:10. când erau pe drum, un om I-a zis: „Doamne, Te voi urma oriunde vei merge." 58 Isus i-a răspuns: „Vulpile au vizuini și păsările cerului au cuiburi, dar Fiul omului n-are unde-Și odihni capul."59 Altuia*Mat. 8:21. i-a zis: „Vino după Mine!" „Doamne", I-a răspuns el, „lasă-mă să mă duc întâi să îngrop pe tatăl meu." 60 Dar Isus i-a zis: „Lasă morții să-și îngroape morții, și tu du-te de vestește Împărăția lui Dumnezeu."61 Un altul a zis: „Doamne, Te*1 Împ. 19:20. voi urma, dar lasă-mă întâi să mă duc să-mi iau rămas-bun de la ai mei." 62 Isus i-a răspuns: „Oricine pune mâna pe plug și se uită înapoi nu este destoinic pentru Împărăția lui Dumnezeu."
