1 On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God for ever, 2 because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3 And it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

4 Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, being allied unto Tobiah, 5 had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meal-offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the heave-offerings for the priests. 6 But in all this time I was not at Jerusalem; for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went unto the king: and after certain days asked I leave of the king, 7 and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. 8 And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber. 9 Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meal-offerings and the frankincense.

10 And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. 11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place. 12 Then brought all Judah the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries. 13 And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute unto their brethren. 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the observances thereof.

15 In those days saw I in Judah some men treading winepresses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses therewith; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. 16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, who brought in fish, and all manner of wares, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

19 And it came to pass that, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I over the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day. 20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of wares lodged without Jerusalem once or twice. 21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath. 22 And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember unto me, O my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy lovingkindness.

23 In those days also saw I the Jews that had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab: 24 and their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people. 25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves. 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did foreign women cause to sin. 27 Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?

28 And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me. 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

30 Thus cleansed I them from all foreigners, and appointed charges for the priests and for the Levites, every one in his work; 31 and for the wood-offering, at times appointed, and for the first-fruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

Dumnezeul nostru a prefăcut blestemul în binecuvântare. 3 Când au auzit Legea, au deosebit*Cap. 9:2;10:28. din Israel pe toți străinii. 4 Înainte de aceasta, preotul Eliașib, care era pus peste cămările Casei Dumnezeului nostru și rudă cu Tobia, 5 pregătise pentru el o cămară mare, unde*Cap. 12:44. puneau mai înainte darurile de mâncare, tămâia, uneltele, zeciuiala din grâu, din must și din untdelemn, părțile rânduite*Num. 18:21,24. pentru leviți, cântăreți și ușieri și darurile ridicate pentru preoți. 6 Eu nu eram la Ierusalim când s-au petrecut toate acestea, căci mă întorsesem la împărat în al treizeci și doilea an*Cap. 5:14. al lui Artaxerxe, împăratul Babilonului. La sfârșitul anului am căpătat de la împărat învoire 7 să mă întorc la Ierusalim și am văzut răul pe care-l făcuse Eliașib, pregătind*Vers. 1,5. o cămară pentru Tobia în curțile Casei lui Dumnezeu. 8 Mi-a părut foarte rău și am aruncat afară din cămară toate lucrurile lui Tobia. 9 Apoi, am poruncit să se curățească*2 Cron. 29:5,15,16,18. odăile și am pus iarăși în ele uneltele Casei lui Dumnezeu, darurile de mâncare și tămâia.

10 Am auzit, de asemenea, că părțile leviților nu*Mal. 3:8. li se dăduseră și că leviții și cântăreții însărcinați cu slujba fugiseră fiecare în*Num. 35:2. ținutul lui. 11 Am mustrat*Vers. 17,25.Prov. 28:4. pe dregători și am zis: „Pentru ce*Cap. 10:39. a fost părăsită Casa lui Dumnezeu?" Și am strâns pe leviți și pe cântăreți și i-am pus iarăși în slujba lor. 12 Atunci*Cap. 10:38,39;12:44., tot Iuda a adus în cămări zeciuiala din grâu, din must și din untdelemn. 13 Am dat cămările*2 Cron. 31:12. Cap. 12:44. în grija preotului Șelemia, cărturarului Țadoc și lui Pedaia, unul din leviți, și le-am adăugat și pe Hanan, fiul lui Zacur, fiul lui Matania, căci le mergea numele că sunt credincioși*Cap. 7:2.1 Cor. 4:2.. Ei au fost însărcinați să facă împărțirile cuvenite fraților lor. 14 Adu-Ți aminte*Vers. 22,31. Cap. 5:19. de mine, Dumnezeule, pentru aceste lucruri și nu uita faptele mele evlavioase, făcute pentru Casa Dumnezeului meu și pentru lucrurile care trebuie păzite în ea!

15 Pe vremea aceea, am văzut în Iuda niște oameni călcând la teasc în ziua Sabatului*Exod 20:10., aducând snopi, încărcând măgarii cu vin, struguri și smochine și cu tot felul de lucruri și aducându-le*Cap. 10:31.Ier. 17:21,22. la Ierusalim în ziua Sabatului. Și i-am mustrat chiar în ziua când își vindeau mărfurile. 16 Mai erau și niște tirieni așezați în Ierusalim, care aduceau pește și tot felul de mărfuri și le vindeau fiilor lui Iuda în ziua Sabatului și în Ierusalim. 17 Am mustrat*Vers. 11. pe mai-marii lui Iuda și le-am zis: „Ce înseamnă această faptă rea pe care o faceți pângărind ziua Sabatului? 18 Oare n-au lucrat*Ier. 17:21-23. așa părinții voștri și nu din pricina aceasta a trimis Dumnezeul nostru toate aceste nenorociri peste noi și peste cetatea aceasta? Și voi aduceți din nou mânia Lui împotriva lui Israel, pângărind Sabatul!" 19 Apoi am poruncit să se închidă porțile Ierusalimului înainte de Sabat, de îndată ce le va ajunge umbra*Lev. 23:32., și să nu se deschidă decât după Sabat. Și am pus câțiva din slujitorii mei la porți*Ier. 17:21,22., să oprească intrarea sarcinilor de mărfuri în ziua Sabatului. 20 Și așa negustorii și vânzătorii de tot felul de lucruri au petrecut noaptea o dată și de două ori afară din Ierusalim. 21 I-am mustrat și le-am zis: „Pentru ce stați noaptea înaintea zidului? Dacă veți mai face încă o dată lucrul acesta, voi pune mâna pe voi." Din clipa aceea, n-au mai venit în timpul Sabatului. 22 Am poruncit și leviților să se curățească*Cap. 12:30. și să vină să păzească porțile, ca să sfințească ziua Sabatului.

Adu-Ți aminte*Vers. 14,31. de mine, Dumnezeule, și pentru aceste lucruri și ocrotește-mă după marea Ta îndurare!

23 Tot pe vremea aceea, am văzut pe niște iudei care își luaseră neveste*Ezra 9:2. asdodiene, amonite și moabite. 24 Jumătate din fiii lor vorbeau limba asdodiană și nu știau să vorbească limba evreiască; nu cunoșteau decât limba cutărui sau cutărui popor. 25 I-am mustrat*Vers. 11.Prov. 28:4. și i-am blestemat; am lovit pe unii din ei, le-am smuls părul și i-am pus să jure*Ezra 10:5. Cap. 10:29,30. în Numele lui Dumnezeu zicând: „Să nu vă dați fetele după fiii lor și să nu luați fetele lor de neveste nici pentru fiii voștri, nici pentru voi. 26 Oare nu în aceasta a păcătuit*1 Împ. 11:1. Solomon, împăratul lui Israel? Nu era alt împărat ca el în mulțimea*1 Împ. 3:13.2 Cron. 1:12. popoarelor; el era iubit*2 Sam. 12:24. de Dumnezeul lui și Dumnezeu îl pusese împărat peste tot Israelul. Totuși*1 Împ. 11:4. femeile străine l-au târât și pe el în păcat. 27 Și acum trebuie să auzim despre voi că săvârșiți o nelegiuire atât de mare și că păcătuiți*Ezra 10:2. împotriva Dumnezeului nostru luând neveste străine?" 28 Unul din fiii lui Ioiada*Cap. 12:10,22., fiul marelui preot Eliașib, era ginerele lui Sanbalat, Horonitul. L-am izgonit de la mine. 29 Adu-Ți aminte*Cap. 6:14. de ei, Dumnezeule, căci au spurcat preoția și legământul*Mal. 2:4,11,12. încheiat de preoți și leviți! 30 I-am curățit*Cap. 10:30. de orice străin și am pus rânduială în tot ce trebuiau să păzească preoții și leviții, fiecare în slujba lui, 31 în ce privea atât darul lemnelor*Cap. 10:34. la vremuri hotărâte, cât și cele dintâi roade.
