1 Ora, Jorão, o filho de Acabe, começou a reinar sobre Israel em Samaria, no décimo oitavo ano de Josafá, rei de Judá, e reinou por doze anos.2 E ele fez o que era mau à vista do SENHOR; mas não como o seu pai, e sua mãe; porque removeu a imagem de Baal, que o seu pai havia feito.3 Todavia ele se apegou aos pecados de Jeroboão, o filho de Nebate, o qual fez Israel pecar; disso não se afastou.4 E Mesa, rei de Moabe, era um negociante de ovelhas, e devolvia ao rei de Israel cem mil cordeiros, e cem mil carneiros, com a lã.5 Porém, sucedeu, quando Acabe estava morto, que o rei de Moabe se rebelou contra o rei de Israel.6 E naquele dia o rei Jorão saiu de Samaria e passou em revista a todo Israel.7 E ele foi e enviou a Josafá, o rei de Judá, dizendo: O rei de Moabe tem se rebelado contra mim; tu virás comigo contra Moabe para a batalha? E ele disse: Eu subirei. Eu sou como tu és, o meu povo como o teu povo, e os meus cavalos como os teus cavalos.8 E ele disse: Por qual caminho devemos subir? E ele respondeu: O caminho pelo meio do deserto de Edom.9 Partiram, pois, o rei de Israel, o rei de Judá e o rei de Edom; e eles promoveram um cerco de uma viagem de sete dias; e não houve água para o exército, e para o gado que os seguia.10 E o rei de Israel disse: Ai! O SENHOR chamou estes três reis juntos para entregá-los na mão de Moabe!11 Mas Josafá disse: Não há aqui um profeta do SENHOR, para que por ele possamos consultar o SENHOR? E um dos servos do rei de Israel respondeu e disse: Aqui está Eliseu, o filho de Safate, o qual derramou água nas mãos de Elias.12 E Josafá disse: A palavra do SENHOR está com ele. Assim, o rei de Israel, e Josafá, e o rei de Edom desceram até ele.13 E Eliseu disse ao rei de Israel: O que tenho eu contigo? Vai-te até os profetas do teu pai, e aos profetas da tua mãe. E o rei de Israel disse a ele: Não; porque o SENHOR chamou estes três reis juntos para entregá-los na mão de Moabe.14 E Eliseu disse: Vive o SENHOR dos Exércitos, diante de quem me ponho de pé, se não fosse por eu respeitar a presença de Josafá, o rei de Judá, eu nem olharia na tua direção, tampouco te veria.15 Agora, porém, trazei-me um menestrel. E sucedeu, quando o menestrel tocou, que a mão do SENHOR veio sobre ele.16 E ele disse: Assim diz o SENHOR: Fazei este vale cheio de fossos.17 Porque, assim diz o SENHOR: Vós não vereis vento, tampouco vereis chuva; mas aquele vale será cheio com água, para que possais beber, tanto vós, quanto o vosso gado e os vossos animais.18 E isto não passa de coisa leve à vista do SENHOR. Ele também entregará os moabitas na vossa mão.19 E vós ferireis toda cidade fortificada, e toda cidade escolhida, e derrubareis toda árvore boa, e tampareis todos os poços de água, e contristareis todo bom lote de terra com pedras.20 E sucedeu, pela manhã, quando a oferta de carne era oferecida, eis que ali chegou água pelo caminho de Edom, e a terra foi cheia pela água.21 E quando todos os moabitas ouviram que os reis haviam subido para lutar contra eles, reuniram todos que eram capazes de se revestir de armadura, e daí para cima, e se puseram de pé na fronteira.22 E eles se levantaram cedo pela manhã, e o sol brilhou sobre a água, e os moabitas viram a água no outro lado tão vermelha quanto o sangue;23 e eles disseram: Isto é sangue; os reis estão seguramente mortos, e mataram-se uns aos outros. Agora, portanto, Moabe: Ao despojo!24 E, quando eles chegaram ao acampamento de Israel, os israelitas se levantaram e feriram os moabitas, de modo que fugiram de diante deles; mas eles seguiram adiante ferindo os moabitas, na sua própria terra.25 E eles arrasaram as cidades, e em todo lote bom de terra cada homem lançou a sua pedra, e o encheu; e eles tamparam todos os poços de água, e derrubaram todas as árvores boas; somente em Quir-Haresete eles deixaram as suas pedras; todavia os fundeiros a cercaram e a feriram.26 E quando o rei de Moabe viu que a batalha era demasiadamente intensa para ele, levou consigo setecentos homens que empunhavam espadas, para abrir caminho até o rei de Edom, mas eles não conseguiram.27 Então, ele tomou o seu filho mais velho, que reinaria no seu lugar, e o ofereceu como oferta queimada sobre o muro. E houve uma grande indignação contra Israel; e eles se afastaram dele, e retornaram para a sua própria terra.

1 Now Jehoram the son of Ahab became king over Israel at Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.2 And he did evil in the eyes of Jehovah, but not like his father and mother; for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made.3 Nevertheless he clung to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin; he did not depart from them.4 Now Mesha the king of Moab was a raiser of sheep, and he had brought to the king of Israel one hundred thousand lambs and the wool of one hundred thousand rams.5 But it happened, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.6 So King Jehoram went out of Samaria that day and mustered all of Israel.7 And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight against Moab? And he said, I will go up; I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.8 And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, By way of the wilderness of Edom.9 So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and the king of Edom, and they made a circuit of a seven days’ journey; and there was no water for the camp, nor for the cattle at their feet.10 And the king of Israel said, Alas! For Jehovah has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab!11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not a prophet of Jehovah here, that we may inquire of Jehovah by him? So one of the servants of the king of Israel answered and said, Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.12 And Jehoshaphat said, The Word of Jehovah is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.13 And Elisha said to the king of Israel, What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother. But the king of Israel said to him, No, for Jehovah has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.14 And Elisha said, As Jehovah of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, surely were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not pay attention to you, nor look at you.15 But now bring me a minstrel. And it happened, when the minstrel played, that the hand of Jehovah came upon him.16 And he said, Thus says Jehovah: Make this valley full of ditches.17 For thus says Jehovah: You shall not see wind, nor shall you see rain; yet the valley shall be filled with water, so that you, your cattle, and your animals may drink.18 And this is but a slight thing in the eyes of Jehovah; He has also delivered the Moabites into your hand.19 Also you shall strike every fortified city and every choice city, and shall cut down every good tree, and stop up every spring of water, and ruin every good piece of land with stones.20 And it happened in the morning, when the grain offering was offered, that behold, water came by way of Edom, and the land was filled with water.21 And when all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, all who were able to bear arms and older were gathered; and they took their stand at the border.22 And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun was shining on the water; and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood.23 And they said, This is blood; the kings have laid waste to make desolate, and have struck down one another; now therefore, Moab, to the spoils!24 So when they came to the camp of Israel, Israel rose up and struck the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they entered, striking to kill the Moabites.25 And they tore down the cities, and each man threw a stone on every good piece of land and filled it; and they stopped up all the springs of water and cut down all the good trees. But they left the stones of Kir Haraseth. However the slingers surrounded and struck it.26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle had prevailed against him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew swords, to break through to the king of Edom, but they could not.27 Then he took his firstborn son who would have reigned in his place, and offered him as a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great wrath against Israel; so they departed from him and returned to their own land.
