1 O primeiro tratado fiz, ó Teófilo, sobre tudo que Jesus começou tanto a fazer como a ensinar,2 até ao dia em que foi recebido em cima, após ter dado mandamentos pelo Espírito Santo aos apóstolos que ele havia escolhido;3 aos quais ele também se apresentou vivo após sua paixão, por meio de muitas provas infalíveis, tendo sido visto por eles durante quarenta dias, e falando das coisas relacionadas ao reino de Deus.4 E, tendo-se reunido com eles, ordenou-lhes que não partissem de Jerusalém, mas que esperassem a promessa do Pai, que, disse ele, de mim ouvistes.5 Porque João verdadeiramente batizou com água, mas vós sereis batizados com o Espírito Santo, dentro de poucos dias.6 Portanto, aqueles que se haviam reunido perguntaram-lhe, dizendo: Senhor, tu restaurarás neste tempo o reino a Israel?7 E ele disse-lhes: Não pertence a vós saber os tempos ou as estações que o Pai estabeleceu pelo seu próprio poder.8 Mas recebereis o poder quando vier sobre vós o Espírito Santo; e sereis minhas testemunhas, tanto em Jerusalém como em toda a Judeia e Samaria, e até a última parte da terra.9 E, tendo falado estas coisas, vendo-o eles, ele foi levado para cima, e uma nuvem o recebeu, ocultando-o a seus olhos.10 E, enquanto eles olhavam firmemente para o céu, enquanto ele subia, eis que dois homens se puseram junto deles com vestiduras brancas,11 os quais lhes disseram: Homens da Galileia, por que estais aí parados olhando para o céu? Esse mesmo Jesus, que dentre vós foi levado para o céu, há de vir da mesma maneira que o vistes ir para o céu.12 Então, eles retornaram para Jerusalém, do monte chamado das Oliveiras, o qual está perto de Jerusalém, uma jornada de um dia de shabat.13 E, entrando, eles subiram à sala superior, onde se encontravam Pedro e Tiago, João e André, Filipe e Tomé, Bartolomeu e Mateus, Tiago, filho de Alfeu, Simão, o Zelote, e Judas, irmão de Tiago.14 Todos estes continuavam unanimemente em oração e súplicas, com as mulheres, e Maria, mãe de Jesus, e com seus irmãos.15 E, naqueles dias, levantou-se Pedro no meio dos discípulos, e disse: (estavam cerca de cento e vinte o número de nomes reunidos)16 Homens e irmãos, era necessário que se cumprisse a escritura que o Espírito Santo predisse pela boca de Davi, acerca de Judas, que foi o guia daqueles que levaram Jesus;17 porque ele foi contado conosco, e obteve parte neste ministério.18 Ora, este homem comprou um campo com a recompensa da iniquidade, e caindo de cabeça, ele estourou dividindo-se ao meio, e todas as suas entranhas jorraram para fora.19 E isto tornou-se conhecido a todos os moradores de Jerusalém, de maneira que na sua própria língua esse campo se chama Aceldama, isto é, Campo de Sangue.20 Porque está escrito no livro dos Salmos: A sua habitação fique desolada, e nenhum homem habite nela, e que outro tome o seu bispado.21 Portanto, destes homens que nos tem acompanhado todo o tempo em que o Senhor Jesus entrou e saiu dentre nós,22 começando desde o batismo de João até ao dia em que dentre nós ele foi levado para cima, um deles seja ordenado para ser testemunha conosco de sua ressurreição.23 E eles apresentaram dois: José, chamado Barsabás, que tinha por sobrenome de Justus, e Matias.24 E eles oraram, e disseram: Tu, Senhor, que conhece os corações de todos os homens, mostra qual destes dois tens escolhido,25 para que ele tome parte neste ministério e apostolado, do qual Judas por sua transgressão caiu, para que ele pudesse ir para o seu próprio lugar.26 E, eles tiraram a sorte, e a sorte caiu sobre Matias. E ele foi contado com os onze apóstolos.
1 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of everything that Jesus began both to do and teach,2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen,3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, which, He said, you have heard from Me;5 for John truly immersed in water, but you shall be immersed in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?7 And He said to them, It is not yours to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit is come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel,11 who also said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into Heaven, will so come in like manner as you have seen Him go into Heaven.12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath days journey.13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, Jacob, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; Jacob of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas of Jacob.14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said,16 Men and brethren, this Scripture needed to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who took Jesus;17 for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry.18 (Now this man procured a field out of the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails poured out.19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akeldama; that is, Field of Blood.)20 For it is written in the book of Psalms: Let his dwelling place become desolate, and let him not live in it; and, Let another take his office.21 Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,22 beginning from the immersion of John until the day when He was taken up from us, it is necessary for one of these to become a witness with us of His resurrection.23 And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.24 And they prayed and said, You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen25 to take part in this ministry and apostleship which Judas abandoned, that he might go to his own place.26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
