1 E, passando por Anfípolis e Apolônia, eles chegaram a Tessalônica, onde havia uma sinagoga de judeus;2 e Paulo, como tinha por costume, foi até eles, e por três shabats arrazoava com eles com base nas escrituras,3 expondo e alegando que convinha que o Cristo sofresse e ressuscitasse dos mortos; e este Jesus, que eu vos prego, é o Cristo.4 E alguns deles creram e ajuntaram-se com Paulo e Silas; e uma grande multidão de gregos religiosos, e não poucas mulheres influentes.5 Mas os judeus que não criam, movidos de inveja, tomaram alguns vagabundos perversos da pior espécie, e, ajuntando o povo, eles alvoroçaram toda a cidade, e, assaltando a casa de Jasom, procuravam tirá-los para fora, diante do povo.6 E não tendo-os achado, arrastaram Jasom e alguns irmãos até os governantes da cidade, gritando: Estes que viraram o mundo de cabeça para baixo chegaram também aqui,7 os quais Jasom recebeu. E todos estes são contrários aos decretos de César, dizendo que há outro rei, Jesus.8 E alvoroçaram o povo e os governantes da cidade que ouviam estas coisas.9 E, tendo recebido a fiança de Jasom e dos outros, eles os deixaram ir.10 E os irmãos imediatamente enviaram Paulo e Silas de noite a Bereia; os quais, chegando lá, foram para a sinagoga dos judeus.11 Estes foram mais nobres do que os de Tessalônica, pois receberam a palavra com toda prontidão da mente, examinando diariamente nas escrituras se estas coisas eram assim.12 Portanto, muitos deles creram, assim como algumas proeminentes mulheres gregas, e não poucos homens.13 Mas, quando os judeus de Tessalônica souberam que a palavra de Deus era pregada por Paulo em Bereia, foram até la, e agitaram o povo.14 E então imediatamente os irmãos enviaram a Paulo para que ele fosse até o mar, mas Silas e Timóteo permaneceram ali.15 E os que conduziam Paulo o levaram até Atenas, e recebendo ordem para que Silas e Timóteo fossem ter com ele o mais rápido possível, eles partiram.16 Ora, enquanto Paulo os esperava em Atenas, o seu espírito se comovia em si mesmo, quando viu a cidade tão entregue à idolatria.17 Portanto, ele disputava na sinagoga com os judeus e com as pessoas religiosas, e diariamente no mercado, com aqueles que o encontravam.18 Então, certos filósofos epicureus e estoicos o enfrentaram. E alguns diziam: O que quer dizer este tagarela? Alguns outros: Ele parece ser um pregador de deuses estranhos. Porque lhes pregava a Jesus e a ressurreição.19 E, tomando-o, o levaram ao Areópago, dizendo: Nós poderíamos saber que nova doutrina é esta da qual tu estás falando?20 Porque nos trazes certas coisas estranhas aos nossos ouvidos; nós queríamos, pois, saber o significado destas coisas.21 (Pois todos os atenienses e estrangeiros residentes de nenhuma outra coisa se ocupavam senão de dizer e ouvir alguma novidade).22 Então, Paulo ficou em pé no meio do Areópago, e disse: Homens de Atenas, eu percebo que em todas as coisas sois supersticiosos.23 Pois eu, passando e vendo a vossa devoção, encontrei um altar no qual estava escrito: Para O Deus Desconhecido. Este, portanto, ao qual reverenciais sem conhecer, é o que eu vos declaro.24 O Deus que fez o mundo e todas as coisas que nele há, visto que ele é o Senhor do céu e da terra, não habita em templos feitos por mãos;25 nem é adorado por mãos de homens, como se necessitasse de alguma coisa, visto que ele dá a todos a vida, a respiração e todas as coisas;26 e de um só sangue fez todas as nações dos homens para habitar sobre toda a face da terra, determinando os tempos antes ordenados, e os limites da sua habitação,27 para que eles buscassem ao Senhor, se, talvez, palpando, possam achá-lo; ainda que ele não está longe de cada um de nós;28 porque nele vivemos, e nos movemos, e existimos, como também alguns dos vossos poetas têm dito: Porque também somos sua descendência.29 Sendo nós, pois, descendência de Deus, não devemos pensar que a divindade seja semelhante ao ouro, ou à prata, ou à pedra, esculpida pela arte e imaginação do homem.30 Mas Deus, fechou os olhos para os tempos de tal ignorância, e agora ordena a todos os homens, em todo lugar, que se arrependam,31 porque ele tem determinado um dia em que há de julgar o mundo com justiça, por meio do homem que ele ordenou; e disso deu certeza a todos os homens, ressuscitando-o dos mortos.32 E, eles ouvindo falar da ressurreição dos mortos, alguns zombavam, e outros diziam: Te ouviremos novamente acerca deste assunto.33 E assim Paulo saiu do meio deles.34 Mas alguns homens, crendo, se uniram a ele, entre os quais estava Dionísio, o areopagita, e uma mulher chamada Dâmaris, e outros com eles.
1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.2 And Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures,3 explaining and setting forth that the Christ needed to suffer and rise again from the dead, and that this Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.4 And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.5 But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious, took some of the baser sort from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and came upon the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.6 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, These who have turned the world upside down have come here, too;7 whom Jason has received, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king, Jesus.8 And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things.9 So when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.10 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the Word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily, to see whether these things are so.12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, both prominent women and men.13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the Word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came there also and stirred up the crowds.14 Then immediately the brethren sent Paul away, to go as though toward the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained there.15 And those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him quickly, they departed.16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was given over to idols.17 Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there.18 Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, What does this empty talker want to say? And others, He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign demons, because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection.19 And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine is, of which you speak?20 For you are bringing some strange things to our ears. Therefore we want to know what these things mean.21 For all the Athenians and the foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing.22 Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you fear the gods;23 for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your devotion, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One to whom you show reverence without knowing, Him I proclaim to you:24 God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of Heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.25 Nor is He served with mens hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.26 And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell everywhere on the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,27 so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;28 for in Him we live and move and exist, as also some of your own poets have said, For we are also His offspring.29 Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine is like gold or silver or stone, something engraved by art and mans devising.30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,31 because He has established a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has appointed. He has given assurance of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead.32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some ridiculed, while others said, We will hear you again concerning this matter.33 So Paul departed from their midst.34 However, some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
