1 E eles tendo escapado, souberam que a ilha se chamava Malta.2 E o povo bárbaro usou conosco de não pouca gentileza; porque, acendendo um fogo, recebeu a todos nós, por causa da chuva que caía, e por causa do frio.3 E, tendo Paulo ajuntado um maço de gravetos e pondo-os no fogo, uma víbora, fugindo do calor, prendeu-se na sua mão.4 E os bárbaros, vendo-lhe a víbora venenosa pendurada na mão, diziam uns aos outros: Sem dúvida este homem é assassino, porque, apesar de ter escapado do mar, a vingança não o deixa viver.5 E tendo ele, sacudido o animal no fogo, não sentiu mal algum.6 Mas eles aguardavam que inchasse, ou que repentinamente caísse morto. Mas depois de esperar por muito tempo, e vendo que nenhum mal lhe sobrevinha, mudando de opinião, diziam que ele era um deus.7 E ali, próximo daquele mesmo lugar, havia uma possessão do principal homem da ilha, cujo nome era Públio, o qual nos recebeu e hospedou cortesmente por três dias.8 E aconteceu do pai de Públio estar doente de febre e fluxo sangrento, e entrando Paulo a vê-lo, depois de orar, impôs suas mãos sobre ele e o curou.9 Então, sendo feito isto, também outros enfermos da ilha vieram e foram curados,10 os quais também nos honraram com muitas atenções, e quando estávamos para partir, nos proveram das coisas que eram necessárias.11 E após três meses partimos em um navio de Alexandria, que invernara na ilha, cuja inscrição era Castor e Pólux.12 E, chegando a Siracusa, permanecemos ali por três dias.13 De lá nós buscamos uma bússola, e chegamos a Régio. E um dia depois, soprando um vento do sul, chegamos no segundo dia a Putéoli,14 onde encontramos irmãos que nos suplicaram a permanecer por sete dias com eles. E assim partimos para Roma.15 E lá os irmãos, tendo ouvido sobre nós, vieram a nos encontrar na praça de Ápio e as Três Tabernas, e Paulo, vendo-os, agradeceu a Deus e tomou coragem.16 E, quando chegamos a Roma, o centurião entregou os prisioneiros ao capitão da guarda; mas permitiu-se a Paulo morar sozinho, com o soldado que o guardava.17 E aconteceu que, após três dias, Paulo convocou os principais judeus. Tendo-se reunido, disse-lhes: Homens e irmãos, embora eu não tenha feito nada contra o povo, nem aos costumes dos nossos pais, eu fui entregue como prisioneiro em Jerusalém nas mãos dos romanos.18 Os quais, tendo-me interrogado, queriam deixar-me ir, por não haver em mim nenhuma causa de morte.19 Mas quando os judeus se opuseram contra isso, eu fui forçado a apelar para César, não que tivesse algo de que acusar a minha nação.20 Por esta causa, portanto, vos chamei para vos ver e falar; porque pela esperança de Israel estou preso com esta corrente.21 E disseram-lhe: Nós não recebemos cartas da Judeia acerca de ti, nem veio aqui algum dos irmãos anunciando ou falando algo mau de ti.22 Mas nós desejamos ouvir o que tu pensas; porque, quanto a esta seita, sabemos que em toda parte se fala contra ela.23 E, havendo-lhe eles assinalado um dia, muitos foram ter com ele em seu alojamento, aos quais ele expôs e testemunhou o reino de Deus persuadindo-os a respeito de Jesus, tanto pela lei de Moisés como pelos profetas, desde à manhã até a noite.24 E alguns criam nas coisas que foram faladas, mas outros não criam.25 E, discordando uns com os outros, eles partiram, após Paulo falar uma palavra: Bem falou o Espírito Santo pelo profeta Isaías a nossos pais,26 dizendo: Vai a este povo e dize: Ouvindo, ouvirão, mas não entenderão. E vendo, verão, mas não perceberão;27 porquanto o coração deste povo está endurecido, e os seus ouvidos ouvem com dificuldade, e fecharam os seus olhos, a fim de que não vejam com os seus olhos, e ouçam com os seus ouvidos, e entendam com o seu coração, e se convertam, e eu os cure.28 Seja, pois, de vosso conhecimento, que aos gentios é enviada a salvação de Deus, e que eles a ouvirão.29 E, tendo ele dito estas palavras, os judeus partiram, tendo grande contenda entre si.30 E Paulo permaneceu por dois anos inteiros na sua própria casa alugada, e recebia todos que lhe procuravam,31 pregando o reino de Deus, e ensinando as coisas relacionadas ao Senhor Jesus Cristo,com toda a confiança, sem nenhum homem o proibindo.

1 And when they had escaped, they then found out that the island was called Melita.2 And the natives showed us unusual kindness; for they kindled a fire and made us all welcome, because of the rain that was falling and because of the cold.3 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat, and fastened on his hand.4 So when the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet justice does not allow to live.5 But he shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm.6 However, they were expecting that he would swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had looked for a long time and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.7 In that region there were lands of the chief of the island, whose name was Publius, who received us and lodged us for three days hospitably.8 And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and dysentery. Paul went in to him and prayed, and he laid his hands on him and healed him.9 So when this was done, the rest of those on the island who had diseases also came and were healed.10 They also honored us with many honors; and when we departed, they provided such things as were necessary.11 After three months we sailed in an Alexandrian ship whose figurehead was the Twin Brothers, which had wintered at the island.12 And landing at Syracuse, we stayed three days.13 From there we circled round and came to Rhegium. And after one day the south wind blew; and the next day we came to Puteoli,14 where we found brethren, and were entreated to stay with them seven days. And thus we went toward Rome.15 And from there, when the brethren heard about us, they came to meet us as far as Appii Forum and Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard; but Paul was permitted to dwell by himself with the soldier who guarded him.17 And it came to pass after three days that Paul called those being chief of the Jews together. So when they had come together, he said to them: Men and brethren, though I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,18 who, when they had examined me, wanted to let me go, because there was no cause for putting me to death.19 But when the Jews spoke against it, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything of which to accuse my nation.20 For this reason therefore I have called for you, to see you and speak with you, because for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.21 Then they said to him, We neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brethren who came reported or spoken any evil of you.22 But we desire to hear from you what you think; for concerning this sect, we know that it is spoken against everywhere.23 So when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging, to whom he explained and testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets, from morning till evening.24 And some were persuaded by the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.25 So when they did not agree among themselves, they were dismissed after Paul had said one word: The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,26 saying, Go to this people and say: Hearing you will hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you will see, and not perceive;27 for the heart of this people has grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, that they should not see with their eyes nor hear with their ears, that they should not understand with their hearts and turn, and I should heal them.28 Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed and had much discussion among themselves.30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own rented house, and received all who came to him,31 preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, without hindrance.
