1 E disse o sumo sacerdote: São estas coisas assim?2 E ele disse: Homens, irmãos e pais, ouvi: O Deus da glória apareceu a nosso pai Abraão, estando ele na Mesopotâmia, antes de habitar em Harã,3 e disse-lhe: Sai da tua terra, e da tua parentela, e vai a uma terra que te mostrarei.4 Então, ele saiu da terra dos caldeus e habitou em Harã. E dali, após a morte de seu pai, ele o trouxe para esta terra em que habitais agora.5 E não lhe deu nela herança alguma, nem sequer o espaço de um pé; mas prometeu que lhe daria a posse dela e, depois dele, à sua semente, não tendo ele ainda filho.6 E Deus falou assim: Que a sua semente deveria peregrinar em terra estranha, e a sujeitariam à escravidão, e a maltratariam por quatrocentos anos.7 E eu julgarei a nação na qual eles serão escravizados, disse Deus, e depois disto, eles sairão e me servirão neste lugar.8 E deu-lhe o pacto da circuncisão; e assim Abraão gerou a Isaque e o circuncidou ao oitavo dia; e Isaque gerou a Jacó; e Jacó gerou aos doze patriarcas.9 E os patriarcas, movidos de inveja, venderam a José para o Egito; mas Deus era com ele,10 e livrou-o de todas as suas aflições, e lhe deu favor e sabedoria à vista do Faraó, rei do Egito, que o constituiu governador sobre o Egito e toda a sua casa.11 Ora, veio uma fome em toda a terra do Egito e de Canaã, e grande aflição; e nossos pais não achavam sustento.12 Mas, tendo ouvido Jacó que havia trigo no Egito, enviou ali nossos pais, pela primeira vez.13 E, na segunda vez, José se deu a conhecer a seus irmãos, e a família de José tornou-se conhecida ao Faraó.14 E José mandou chamar a seu pai Jacó, e a toda a sua família, setenta e cinco almas.15 E Jacó desceu ao Egito e morreu, ele e nossos pais.16 E foram carregados para Siquém, e colocados na sepultura que Abraão comprara por uma soma de dinheiro aos filhos de Hamor, pai de Siquém.17 Aproximando-se, porém, o tempo da promessa que Deus tinha jurado a Abraão, o povo cresceu e se multiplicou no Egito,18 até surgir um outro rei, que não conhecia a José.19 Este, tratando com astúcia a nossa parentela, maltratou nossos pais para que eles abandonassem seus filhos pequenos até o fim, para que não sobrevivessem.20 Naquele tempo nasceu Moisés, e era muito formoso, e foi criado por três meses na casa de seu pai.21 Mas quando ele foi abandonado, a filha de Faraó o tomou e o criou como se fosse seu filho.22 E Moisés foi instruído em toda a sabedoria dos egípcios, e era poderoso em suas palavras e atos.23 E, quando ele completou a idade de quarenta anos, veio no seu coração visitar seus irmãos, os filhos de Israel.24 E, vendo um deles sofrendo injustamente, ele o defendeu, e vingou o oprimido, matando o egípcio;25 e ele achava que seus irmãos entenderiam que Deus, pela sua mão, lhes havia de dar a liberdade; mas eles não entenderam.26 E, no dia seguinte, ele apareceu aos que estavam lutando, e tentou apaziguá-los novamente, dizendo: Senhores, sois irmãos; por que vos maltratais um ao outro?27 Mas aquele que maltratava ao seu próximo o repeliu, dizendo: Quem te fez governante e juiz sobre nós?28 Queres tu matar-me, como tu mataste o egípcio ontem?29 Então, diante deste dizer, Moisés fugiu, e esteve como um estrangeiro na terra de Midiã, onde ele gerou dois filhos.30 E, completados quarenta anos, apareceu-lhe no deserto do monte Sinai o anjo do Senhor, numa chama de fogo em uma sarça.31 Quando Moisés viu isso, se maravilhou da visão; e, aproximando-se para observar, a voz do Senhor veio a ele,32 dizendo: Eu sou o Deus de teus pais, o Deus de Abraão, e o Deus de Isaque, e o Deus de Jacó. E Moisés tremia e não ousava olhar.33 Então, o Senhor lhe disse: Tira as sandálias dos teus pés, porque o lugar em que estás é terra santa.34 Eu tenho visto! Eu tenho visto a aflição do meu povo que está no Egito, e eu ouvi os seus gemidos, e desci para livrá-los. E agora vai, eu te enviarei ao Egito.35 A este Moisés, a quem eles rejeitaram, dizendo: Quem te fez governante e juiz? A este Deus enviou para ser governante e libertador, pela mão do anjo que lhe aparecera na sarça.36 Ele os tirou, após ele ter mostrado maravilhas e sinais na terra do Egito, no mar Vermelho e no deserto, por quarenta anos.37 Este é aquele Moisés que disse aos filhos de Israel: Um profeta como eu o Senhor, vosso Deus, vos levantará dentre vossos irmãos; a ele ouvireis.38 Este é o que esteve na igreja no deserto, com o anjo que lhe falou no monte Sinai, e com nossos pais, o qual recebeu os oráculos de vida para nos dar;39 ao qual nossos pais não quiseram obedecer, antes o rejeitaram e, em seus corações, retornaram ao Egito,40 dizendo a Arão: Faze-nos deuses que vão adiante de nós; porque este Moisés, que nos tirou da terra do Egito, não sabemos o que lhe aconteceu.41 E naqueles dias eles fizeram um bezerro, e ofereceram sacrifício ao ídolo, e se regozijaram nas obras das suas próprias mãos.42 Mas Deus se afastou e os entregou para adorar a hoste do céu, como está escrito no livro dos profetas: Ó casa de Israel, me oferecestes animais mortos e sacrifícios durante quarenta anos no deserto?43 De fato, tomastes o tabernáculo de Moloque, e a estrela do vosso deus Renfã, figuras que vós fizestes para as adorar. E eu vos removerei para além de Babilônia.44 Nossos pais tinham o tabernáculo do testemunho no deserto, como ordenara aquele que disse a Moisés que o fizesse segundo o modelo que tinha visto.45 O qual nossos pais, recebendo-o também, o levaram com Jesus à posse dos gentios, que Deus expulsou da face de nossos pais, até aos dias de Davi,46 que achou favor diante de Deus, e desejou prover um tabernáculo para o Deus de Jacó.47 Mas Salomão lhe edificou uma casa.48 O Altíssimo, porém, não habita em templos feitos por mãos, como diz o profeta:49 O céu é o meu trono, e a terra é o meu escabelo; que casa me edificareis, diz o Senhor, ou qual é o lugar do meu descanso?50 Não foi a minha mão que fez todas as coisas?51 Duros de cerviz, e incircuncisos de coração e ouvidos; vós sempre resistis ao Espírito Santo; como fizeram vossos pais, assim fazei vós.52 A qual dos profetas não perseguiram vossos pais? Até mataram os que anteriormente anunciaram a vinda do Justo, do qual vós agora fostes traidores e assassinos;53 vós que recebestes a lei por intermédio dos anjos, e não a guardastes.54 E, eles ouvindo estas coisas, cortou-se-lhes o coração e rangiam os seus dentes sobre ele.55 Mas ele, estando cheio do Espírito Santo, olhando firmemente para o céu, viu a glória de Deus, e Jesus em pé à destra de Deus,56 e disse: Eis que eu vejo os céus abertos e o Filho do homem em pé à destra de Deus.57 Então, eles gritando em alta voz, taparam os ouvidos e arremeteram unânimes contra ele.58 E, expulsando-o da cidade, o apedrejavam. E as testemunhas depuseram as suas vestes aos pés de um jovem chamado Saulo.59 E eles apedrejaram a Estêvão, que invocava a Deus, dizendo: Senhor Jesus, recebei o meu espírito.60 E, pondo-se de joelhos, clamou em alta voz: Senhor, não coloques este pecado para eles carregarem. E, tendo dito isto, adormeceu.

1 Then the high priest said, Tell us whether you hold thus to these things?2 And he said, Brethren and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,3 and said to him, Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.4 Then he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, when his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell.5 And God gave him no inheritance in it, not even enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no child, He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him.6 But God spoke in this way: that his seed would dwell in a foreign land, and that they would bring them into bondage and oppress them four hundred years.7 And the nation to whom they will be in bondage I will judge, said God, and after that they shall come out and serve Me in this place.8 And He gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham begot Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot the twelve patriarchs.9 And the patriarchs, becoming envious, sold Joseph into Egypt. But God was with him10 and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his household.11 Now a famine and great distress came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers found no food.12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.13 And the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s kindred became known to Pharaoh.14 Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob and all his relatives to him, seventy-five souls.15 So Jacob went down into Egypt; and he died, he and our fathers.16 And they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price of money from the sons of Hamor of Shechem.17 But when the time of the promise drew near which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt18 till another king arose who did not know Joseph.19 This man dealt craftily with our people, and oppressed our forefathers, making them cast out their babies, so that they might not live.20 At this time Moses was born, and was beautiful to God; and he was brought up in his father’s house for three months.21 But when he was set out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him away and brought him up as her own son.22 And Moses was trained in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds.23 Now when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to look after his brethren, the children of Israel.24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended and avenged him who was oppressed, and struck down the Egyptian.25 For he supposed that his brethren would have understood that God would deliver them by his hand, but they did not understand.26 And the next day he appeared to two of them as they were fighting, and urged them to peace, saying, Men, you are brethren; why do you wrong one another?27 But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?28 Do you not want to do away with me in the same way you did the Egyptian yesterday?29 Then, at this saying, Moses fled and became an alien in the land of Midian, where he had two sons.30 And when forty years had passed, the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire in a bush, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai.31 When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he drew near to observe, the voice of the Lord came to him,32 I am the God of your fathers; the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses becoming terrified, dared not look.33 Then the Lord said to him, Loosen the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.34 I have given attention to see the affliction of My people who are in Egypt; I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.35 This Moses whom they rejected, saying, Who made you a ruler and a judge? is the one God sent to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the bush.36 He led them out, after he had shown wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years.37 This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear.38 This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, the one who received the living Words to give to us,39 whom our fathers did not desire to obey, but thrust him away. And in their hearts they turned back to Egypt,40 saying to Aaron, Make us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.41 And they made a calf in those days, led a sacrifice up to the idol, and made merry in the works of their own hands.42 Then God turned and gave them over to serve the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the Prophets: Did you offer Me slaughtered animals and sacrifices during forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?43 You also took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, images which you made to do homage; and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, as He appointed, instructing Moses to make it according to the pattern that he had seen,45 which our fathers, having received it in turn, also brought with Joshua into the land possessed by the Gentiles, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers until the days of David,46 who found favor before God and asked to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.47 But Solomon built Him a house.48 However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says:49 Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. What house will you build for Me? says the Lord, or what is the place of My rest?50 Has My hand not made all these things?51 You stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always oppose the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they, who received the Law by the command of angels and did not keep it, killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One,53 of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers.54 When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into Heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,56 and said, Behold, I see the Heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord;58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid aside their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.59 And they stoned Stephen as he was invoking and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.60 And he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, Lord, do not charge them with this sin. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
