1 Palavras do Pregador, filho de Davi, rei em Jerusalém.2 Vaidade de vaidades, diz o Pregador, vaidade de vaidades; tudo é vaidade.3 Que benefício tem o homem de todo o seu trabalho, que faz debaixo do sol?4 Uma geração passa, e uma outra geração vem; mas a terra permanece para sempre.5 O sol nasce, e o sol se põe, e apressa-se de volta ao seu lugar de onde nasceu.6 O vento vai em direção ao sul, e faz o seu giro para o norte; o vento gira continuamente, e retorna novamente de acordo com os seus circuitos.7 Todos os rios correm para o mar, e contudo, o mar não fica cheio; ao lugar de onde os rios vêm, para ali retornam eles novamente.8 Todas as coisas são trabalhosas; o homem não o pode exprimir; o olho não se satisfaz em ver, nem o ouvido se enche de ouvir.9 O que aconteceu, isso é o que há de ser; e o que está feito, é o que deverá ser feito; e não há coisa nova debaixo do sol.10 Há alguma coisa da qual se possa dizer: Vê, isto é novo? Já era nos velhos tempos, que foram antes de nós.11 Não há lembrança de coisas anteriores; nem haverá nenhuma lembrança das coisas que hão de vir, entre as que hão de vir depois.12 Eu, o Pregador, fui rei sobre Israel em Jerusalém.13 E dediquei o meu coração a buscar e a procurar pela sabedoria no que diz respeito a todas as coisas que são realizadas debaixo do céu; esta enfadonha ocupação Deus deu aos filhos do homem, para que nela se exercitem.14 Tenho visto todas as obras que se fazem debaixo do sol, e eis que tudo é vaidade e aflição de espírito.15 Aquilo que é torto não se pode endireitar; e aquilo que falta não se pode numerar.16 Falei eu com o meu próprio coração, dizendo: Eis que adquiri grande riqueza, e superei em sabedoria a todos os que vieram antes de mim em Jerusalém; sim, o meu coração teve uma grande experiência de sabedoria e conhecimento.17 E apliquei o meu coração a conhecer a sabedoria e a conhecer a loucura e as tolices, e percebi que isto também é aflição de espírito.18 Porque na muita sabedoria há muita angústia; e aquele que aumenta o conhecimento, aumenta a tristeza.

1 The words of the preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:2 Vanity of vanities, says the preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.3 What is the profit to a man in all his labor which he labors under the sun?4 A generation passes away, and a generation comes; but the earth stands perpetually.5 The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, panting in a hurry to its place where it rises again.6 The wind goes toward the south, and it turns around to the north; it whirls around continually; and the wind returns according to its circuits.7 All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; to the place from where the rivers come, there they return again.8 All things are full of labor; man is not able to utter it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.9 That which has been is that which shall be; and that which has been done is that which shall be done; and there is nothing new under the sun.10 Is there a thing of which it may be said, See, this is new? It has already been in the days of antiquity, which were before us.11 There is no remembrance of former things, and also no remembrance of following things of what will be; nor a remembrance of those things by those who follow afterwards.12 I, the preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.13 And I have given my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that which is done under the heavens. It is an evil task which God has given to the sons of men to be busied with.14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and striving of spirit.15 What is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is lacking cannot be numbered.16 I spoke within my own heart, saying, Lo, I have become great and have gathered more wisdom than all who have been before me in Jerusalem; yea, my heart has seen much of wisdom and knowledge.17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly; I have perceived that this also is striving of spirit.18 For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
