1 Agora digo, que o herdeiro, enquanto criança, em nada difere do servo, ainda que seja senhor de tudo;2 mas está sob tutores e administradores, até ao tempo determinado por seu pai.3 Assim também nós, quando éramos crianças, estávamos escravizados pelos rudimentos do mundo;4 mas quando veio a plenitude dos tempos, Deus enviou o seu Filho, nascido de mulher, nascido sob a lei,5 para redimir os que estavam sob a lei, para que recebêssemos a adoção de filhos.6 E porque vós sois filhos, Deus enviou o Espírito de seu Filho aos vossos corações, que clama: Aba, Pai.7 Portanto, já não és servo, mas filho; e se és filho, então és também herdeiro de Deus por meio de Cristo.8 Outrora, quando não conhecíeis a Deus, servíeis aos que por natureza não são deuses.9 Agora, porém, depois de conhecerdes a Deus, ou melhor, sendo conhecidos por Deus, como é que tornais aos elementos fracos e miseráveis, aos quais desejais novamente estar em escravidão?10 Observais dias, e meses, e tempos e anos.11 Eu tenho receio por vós, de que eu tenha trabalhado convosco em vão.12 Irmãos, rogo-vos que sejais como eu; pois eu sou como vós sois; vós não me fizestes mal algum.13 Vós sabeis como através de enfermidade na carne eu vos preguei o evangelho pela primeira vez.14 E minha tentação, que estava em minha carne, nem por isto me desprezastes, nem me rejeitastes, antes me acolhestes como a um anjo de Deus, até mesmo como Cristo Jesus.15 Onde está agora aquela bem-aventurança da qual falastes? Pois tenho em memória que, se possível fora, vós teríeis arrancado os teus próprios olhos e dado-os para mim.16 Tornei-me, portanto, vosso inimigo, porque vos disse a verdade?17 Eles zelosamente têm afeto por vós, mas não para o bem; sim, eles vos excluiriam, a fim de que vós possais ter afeto por eles.18 Mas é bom ser zelosamente sempre afetado por uma coisa boa, e não somente quando estou presente convosco.19 Meus filhinhos, por quem de novo sinto dores de parto, até que Cristo seja formado em vós,20 eu desejo estar presente agora convosco, e mudar o tom da minha voz; porquanto eu me encontro em dúvida a respeito de vós.21 Dizei-me, vós que quereis estar sob a lei: Não ouvis a lei?22 Porque está escrito, que Abraão teve dois filhos, um da escrava e outro de mulher livre.23 Mas aquele que nasceu da escrava nasceu segundo a carne, e aquele que nasceu da mulher livre nasceu da promessa.24 Tais coisas são uma alegoria; pois estes são os dois pactos: o do monte Sinai, que gerou para a escravidão, que é Agar.25 Porque Agar é o monte Sinai na Arábia, e corresponde à Jerusalém atual, que está em cativeiro com seus filhos.26 Mas a Jerusalém que está lá no alto é livre, e é a mãe de todos nós.27 Porquanto está escrito: Alegra-te, tu estéril que não tens; esforça-te e clama, tu que não estás de parto, pois a desolada tem muito mais filhos do que aquela que tem um marido.28 Agora nós, irmãos, como Isaque o foi, somos os filhos da promessa.29 Como naquele tempo, aquele que era nascido segundo a carne perseguia o que havia nascido do Espírito, o mesmo se dá hoje.30 Todavia, o que diz a escritura? Lança fora a escrava e o seu filho, porque o filho da mulher escrava não será herdeiro com o filho da mulher livre.31 Assim então, irmãos, nós não somos filhos da mulher escrava, mas sim da que é livre.

1 Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all,2 but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father.3 Even so we, when we were children, were enslaved under the elements of the world.4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, brought forth out of a woman, brought forth under the Law,5 to redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, Abba, Father!7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.8 However, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods.9 But now, knowing God, or rather being known by God, how is it that you turn again to the feeble and worthless principles, to which you desire again to be in bondage?10 You observe days and months and seasons and years.11 I am afraid for you, lest I have labored among you in vain.12 Brethren, I beseech you to be as I am, for I am as you are. You have not wronged me at all.13 You know that because of physical infirmity I preached the gospel to you at the first.14 And my trial which was in my flesh you did not despise or reject, but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.15 What then was the blessing you enjoyed? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your own eyes and given them to me.16 Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?17 They zealously pursue you, but not well; yes, they want to exclude you, that you may be zealous for them.18 But it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, and not only when I am present with you.19 My little children, for whom I travail again until Christ is formed in you,20 I would like to be present with you now and to change my tone; for I have doubts about you.21 Tell me, you who desire to be under the Law, do you not hear the Law?22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman.23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise,24 which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar;25 for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, and is in bondage with her children;26 but the Jerusalem from above is free, which is the mother of us all.27 For it is written: Rejoice, O barren, you who do not bear. Break forth and shout, you who are not in labor. For the desolate has many more children than she who has a husband.28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.29 But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now.30 Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free.
