1 Ora, Sarai, esposa de Abrão, não lhe gerava filhos, mas ela tinha uma serva, uma egípcia, cujo nome era Agar.2 E Sarai disse a Abrão: Eis que o SENHOR me tem impedido de gerar; suplico-te, entra na minha serva; pode ser que eu possa obter filhos por ela. E Abrão ouviu à voz de Sarai.3 E Sarai, esposa de Abrão, tomou Agar, sua serva, a egípcia, depois de Abrão ter habitado dez anos na terra de Canaã, e a deu por mulher a seu marido.4 E ele entrou em Agar, e ela concebeu. E vendo ela que tinha concebido, sua senhora foi desprezada a seus olhos.5 E Sarai disse a Abrão: Meu erro seja sobre ti; eu dei minha serva em teu seio, e quando ela viu que havia concebido, fui desprezada aos seus olhos; o SENHOR julgue entre mim e ti.6 Mas Abrão disse a Sarai: Eis que tua serva está em tua mão. Faze a ela como te apraz. E quando Sarai a tratou severamente, ela fugiu da sua face.7 E o anjo do SENHOR a achou junto a uma fonte de água no deserto, junto à fonte no caminho para Sur.8 E ele disse: Agar, serva de Sarai, de onde tu vieste? E para onde vais? E ela disse: Eu fujo da face da minha senhora Sarai.9 E o anjo do SENHOR lhe disse: Volta a tua senhora, e sujeita-te debaixo das suas mãos.10 E o anjo do SENHOR lhe disse: Eu multiplicarei a tua semente tão excessivamente, que não será contada por seu grande número.11 E o anjo do SENHOR lhe disse: Eis que tu estás com filho, e gerarás um filho, e chamarás seu nome Ismael; porque o SENHOR ouviu a tua aflição.12 E ele será homem selvagem; sua mão será contra todo homem, e a mão de todo homem contra ele; e ele habitará na presença de todos os seus irmãos.13 E ela invocou o nome do SENHOR que com ela falava: Tu és Deus que me vê; pois ela disse: Não olhei eu também para aquele que me vê?14 Portanto o poço foi chamado Beer-Laai-Roi; e eis que ele está entre Cades e Berede.15 E Agar gerou um filho a Abrão; e Abrão chamou o nome de seu filho, que Agar lhe gerou, Ismael.16 E era Abrão da idade de oitenta e seis anos quando Agar gerou Ismael a Abrão.

1 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar.2 And Sarai said to Abram, See now, Jehovah has restrained me from bearing. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall build up a family by her. And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.3 And Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maidservant, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan.4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.5 And Sarai said to Abram, My injustice be upon you! I gave my maid into your bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. Jehovah judge between me and you.6 But Abram said to Sarai, Behold, your maid is in your hand; do to her as is good in your eyes. And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, she fled from her presence.7 And the Angel of Jehovah found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.8 And He said, Hagar, Sarai’s maidservant, where have you come from, and where are you going? She said, I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.9 And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hand.10 And the Angel of Jehovah said unto her, I will multiply your seed exceedingly, so that they shall not be numbered for multitude.11 And the Angel of Jehovah said unto her: Behold, you are with child, and you shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because Jehovah has heard your affliction.12 He shall be a wild ass of a man; his hand shall be against every man, and every man’s hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.13 And she called the name of Jehovah who spoke to her, God-Who-Sees; for she said, Have I also here looked upon Him who sees me?14 Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.15 And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.16 And Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
