1 Houve também sorte para a tribo de Manassés; pois ele fora o primogênito de José; isto é; para Maquir, o primogênito de Manassés, o pai de Gileade, porquanto ele era um homem de guerra, por isso possuiu Gileade e Basã.2 Houve também sorte para o restante dos filhos de Manassés, pelas suas famílias; para os filhos de Abiezer, e para os filhos de Heleque, e para os filhos de Asriel, e para os filhos de Siquém, e para os filhos de Héfer, e para os filhos de Semida; estes eram os filhos homens de Manassés, o filho de José, pelas suas famílias.3 Porém, Zelofeade, o filho de Héfer, o filho de Gileade, o filho de Maquir, o filho de Manassés, não teve filhos, mas filhas; e estes são os nomes das suas filhas: Macla, Noa, Hogla, Milca e Tirza.4 E elas se aproximaram diante de Eleazar, o sacerdote, e diante de Josué, o filho de Num, e diante dos príncipes, dizendo: O SENHOR ordenou a Moisés que nos desse herança no meio dos nossos irmãos. Portanto, segundo o mandamento do SENHOR, ele lhes deu herança no meio dos irmãos do seu pai.5 E caíram dez porções a Manassés, ao lado da terra de Gileade e Basã, as quais ficavam no outro lado do ­Jordão;6 porque as filhas de Manassés tinham herança no meio dos seus filhos; e o restante dos filhos de Manassés possuía a terra de Gileade.7 E o termo de Manassés era desde Aser até Micmetate, que está diante de Siquém; e o limite seguia ao longo do lado direito dos habitantes de En-Tapua.8 Ora, Manassés tinha a terra de Tapua; mas Tapua, no limite de Manassés, pertencia aos filhos de Efraim;9 e o termo descia até o rio Caná, em direção ao sul do rio; estas cidades de Efraim estão entre as cidades de Manassés; o termo de Manassés também era o lado norte do rio, e as suas saídas eram no mar;10 na direção sul ficava o termo de Efraim, e na direção norte ficava o de Manassés, e o mar é o seu limite; e ambos se encontravam em Aser, ao norte, e em Issacar, a leste.11 E Manassés tinha, em Issacar e em Aser, a Bete-Seã e as suas aldeias, e Ibleão e as suas aldeias, e os habitantes de Dor e as suas aldeias, e os habitantes de En-Dor e as suas aldeias, e os habitantes de Taanaque e as suas aldeias, e os habitantes de Megido e as suas aldeias, três regiões.12 Contudo, os filhos de Israel não conseguiram expulsar os habitantes daquelas cidades; mas os cananeus queriam habitar naquela terra.13 Contudo, sucedeu que, quando os filhos de Israel estavam mais fortes, eles colocaram os cananeus sob tributo; mas não os expulsaram por completo.14 E os filhos de José falaram a Josué, dizendo: Por que me deste só uma sorte e uma porção em herança, vendo que eu sou um povo grande, em vista do que o SENHOR me abençoou até aqui?15 E Josué lhes respondeu: Se tu fores um povo grande, então sobe até a região da mata, e derruba para ti ali na terra dos ferezeus e dos gigantes, caso o monte Efraim te seja demasiado estreito.16 E os filhos de José disseram: O monte não é suficiente para nós; e todos os cananeus que habitam na terra do vale têm carruagens de ferro, tanto aqueles que são de Bete-Seã e as suas aldeias, como aqueles que são do vale de Jezreel.17 E Josué falou à casa de José, a saber, a Efraim e a Manassés, dizendo: Tu és um povo grande, e tens grande poder; tu não terás somente uma sorte;18 porém, o monte será teu, pois ele é uma mata, e tu o derrubarás; e as suas saídas serão tuas, pois tu expulsarás os cananeus, embora eles tenham carruagens de ferro, e embora sejam fortes.

1 There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph: for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war; therefore he was given Gilead and Bashan.2 And there was a lot for the rest of the sons of Manasseh according to their families: for the sons of Abiezer, the sons of Helek, the sons of Asriel, the sons of Shechem, the sons of Hepher, and the sons of Shemida; these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph according to their families.3 But Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.4 And they came near before Eleazar the priest, before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the leaders, saying, Jehovah had commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers. Therefore, according to the mouth of Jehovah, he gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers.5 Ten portions fell to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side of the Jordan,6 because the daughters of Manasseh had inherited an inheritance among his sons; and the rest of Manasseh’s sons had the land of Gilead.7 And the border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethath, that lies before Shechem; and the border went along south to the inhabitants of En Tappuah.8 Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the sons of Ephraim.9 And the border descended to the Brook Kanah, southward to the brook. These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh was on the north side of the brook; and it ended at the sea.10 Southward it was Ephraim’s, northward it was Manasseh’s, and the sea was its border. It met up with Asher on the north and Issachar on the east.11 And in Issachar and in Asher, Manasseh had Beth Shean and its daughter-villages, Ibleam and its daughter-villages, the inhabitants of Dor and its daughter-villages, the inhabitants of En Dor and its daughter-villages, the inhabitants of Taanach and its daughter-villages, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its daughter-villages; three high regions.12 Yet the sons of Manasseh could not dispossess those cities, but the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.13 And it happened, when the sons of Israel grew strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, but did not drive them out to dispossess them.14 And the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, Why have you given us only one lot and one portion to inherit, since we are a numerous people, inasmuch as Jehovah has blessed us until now?15 And Joshua answered them, If you are a numerous people, then go up to the forests and clear out a place for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and the giants, since the mountains of Ephraim are too confined for you.16 And the sons of Joseph said, The mountains are not enough for us; and all the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both those who are of Beth Shean and its daughter-villages and those who are of the Valley of Jezreel.17 And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh, saying, You are a numerous people and have great power, you shall not have only one lot,18 but the mountains shall be yours. Although it is a forest, you shall cut it down, and it shall be yours to its extremities; for you shall dispossess the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots and are strong.
