1 E Sansão desceu a Timna, e viu em Timna uma mulher das filhas dos filisteus.2 E ele subiu, e contou ao seu pai e à sua mãe, e disse: Eu vi em Timna uma mulher das filhas dos filisteus; agora, portanto, tragam-na para mim como esposa.3 Então o seu pai e a sua mãe lhe disseram: Não há nenhuma mulher entre as filhas dos teus irmãos, ou entre todo o meu povo, para que tu vás tomar uma esposa dentre os filisteus incircuncisos? E Sansão disse ao seu pai: Dá-me essa mulher, pois ela muito me agrada.4 Porém, o seu pai e a sua mãe não sabiam que era do SENHOR, que ele procurasse ocasião contra os filisteus; pois naquele tempo, os filisteus tinham domínio sobre Israel.5 Então, Sansão desceu com o seu pai e a sua mãe para Timna, e veio até os vinhedos de Timna; e eis que um leão novo rugiu contra ele.6 E o Espírito do SENHOR veio poderosamente sobre ele, e ele o rasgou como teria rasgado um cabrito, e ele não tinha nada nas suas mãos; porém ele não contou ao seu pai e nem à sua mãe o que havia feito.7 E ele desceu, e falou com a mulher; e ela agradou muito a Sansão.8 E, depois de um tempo, ele retornou para levá-la, e ele virou para ver a carcaça do leão; e eis que havia um enxame de abelhas e mel na carcaça do leão.9 E ele tomou o mel em suas mãos, e seguiu adiante comendo, e chegou até o seu pai e à sua mãe, e lhes deu, e eles comeram; porém, ele não lhes contou que havia tirado o mel da carcaça do leão.10 Assim, o seu pai desceu até a mulher, e Sansão fez ali uma festa; pois assim costumavam fazer os moços.11 E sucedeu que, quando eles o viram, trouxeram trinta companheiros para estar com ele.12 E Sansão lhes disse: Quero, agora, propor um enigma a vós: se me puderdes declará-lo dentro dos sete dias da festa, e solucioná-lo, então, dar-vos-ei trinta lençóis e trinta mudas de vestes;13 mas se vós não mo puderes declará-lo, então vós me dareis trinta lençóis e trinta mudas de vestes. E eles lhe disseram: Propõe o teu enigma, para que possamos ouvi-lo.14 E ele lhes disse: Do devorador saiu a carne, e do forte saiu a doçura. E eles não conseguiram resolver o enigma em três dias.15 E sucedeu que, no sétimo dia, eles disseram à esposa de Sansão: Seduz o teu marido, para que ele possa nos declarar o enigma, para que não queimemos a ti e a casa de teu pai com fogo. Chamastes-nos aqui para tirar de nós o que temos? Não é assim?16 E a mulher de Sansão chorou diante dele, e disse: Tu só me odeias, e não me amas, pois propuseste um enigma aos filhos do meu povo, e não mo revelastes. E ele lhe disse: Eu não o contei nem ao meu pai, nem à minha mãe, devo contá-lo a ti?17 E ela chorou diante dele os sete dias, enquanto a sua festa durou; e sucedeu que, no sétimo dia, ele lhe contou, porque ela o incomodava; e ela contou o enigma aos filhos do seu povo.18 E os homens da cidade lhe disseram no sétimo dia, antes de o sol se pôr: O que é mais doce do que o mel? E o que é mais forte do que um leão? E ele lhes disse: Se não tivésseis arado com a minha novilha, não teríeis descoberto o meu enigma.19 E o Espírito do SENHOR veio sobre ele, e ele desceu a Asquelom, e matou trinta dos seus homens, e tomou o seu despojo, e deu mudas de vestes àqueles que expuseram o enigma. E a sua ira se acendeu, e ele subiu à casa do seu pai.20 Porém, a esposa de Sansão fora entregue ao seu companheiro, o qual ele tinha por seu amigo.

1 Now Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines.2 So he went up and told his father and mother, saying, I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore, get her for me as a wife.3 Then his father and mother said to him, Is there no woman among the daughters of your brethren, or among all my people, that you must go and get a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said to his father, Get her for me, for she is pleasing to my eyes.4 But his father and mother did not know that it was of Jehovah, that He was seeking an occasion against the Philistines. For at that time the Philistines were ruling over Israel.5 So Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah. And behold, a young lion came roaring toward him.6 And the Spirit of Jehovah rushed upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.7 Then he went down and talked with the woman; and she was pleasing in the eyes of Samson.8 After some days, when he returned to take her, he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion. And behold, a swarm of bees and honey were in the carcass of the lion.9 And he took some of it in his hands and went along, eating. And when he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them, and they also ate. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey out of the carcass of the lion.10 So his father went down to the woman. And Samson gave a feast there, for young men usually did this.11 And it happened, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.12 And Samson said to them, Let me propound a riddle to you. If you expound to declare it to me within the seven days of the feast, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing.13 But if you are not able to declare it to me, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing. And they said to him, Propound your riddle, that we may hear it.14 And he said to them: Out of the eater came forth food, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And for three days they were not able to expound the riddle.15 But it came to pass on the seventh day that they said to Samson’s wife, Entice your husband, that he may expound the riddle to us, or else we will burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you invited us in order to make us poor? Is that not so?16 Then Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, You only hate me! You do not love me! You have propounded a riddle to the sons of my people, but you have not explained it to me. And he said to her, Behold, I have not expounded it to my father or my mother; so should I declare it to you?17 And she wept before him the seven days while their feast lasted. And it happened on the seventh day that he told her, because she pressed him so much. And she declared the riddle to the sons of her people.18 And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down: What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion? And he said to them: If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have found out my riddle!19 And the Spirit of Jehovah rushed upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave the changes of clothing to those who had declared the riddle; thus his anger burned. And he went up to his father’s house.20 And Samson’s wife was given to his companion, who had been his best man.
